Locator.fill() takes a required value—a string for text-like controls or a boolean for checkbox, radio-button, and switch targets—and an optional options object. The key version caveat: Puppeteer’s method reference is for version 25.12.0, but the detailed typingThreshold option is documented on the /next/ reference. Check the documentation matching your installed version before relying on it.
How to fill a field with a Puppeteer locator
The method reference for Puppeteer 25.12.0 shows this signature:

): Promise<void>Call fill() on a locator that identifies the target element. Puppeteer determines the element type at runtime and chooses the corresponding fill method. For example:

Which value should you pass?

For example, a checkbox can be set with a boolean:

If a control is implemented as a nonstandard component, use an interaction supported by that widget rather than assuming it behaves like a native form element.
What does typingThreshold do?
The next-version LocatorFillOptions reference lists typingThreshold, described as the number of characters to type before switching to a faster fill-out method. The documented default is 100.

Confirm the options supported by the documentation for your installed release. When the installed version’s behavior matches the next-version reference, explicitly passing 100 is usually unnecessary because that is the documented default. The description does not establish a performance guarantee or specify event behavior.
How locator retries and timeouts affect fill()
Locators are strategies for locating objects and performing actions. Puppeteer checks preconditions automatically and retries an operation when the target is not ready. A call that waits or retries may therefore reflect locator readiness rather than an incorrect value. See the Locator class reference for locator controls, including waiting for enabled elements, viewport presence, and a stable bounding box.

Set a timeout for locator actions
Locator.setTimeout(timeout) returns a cloned locator configured with a total timeout for locator actions. The documented default is Page.getDefaultTimeout(); setting the timeout to 0 disables it. This is locator-level configuration, not a documented timeout property of LocatorFillOptions.

Troubleshoot a fill call that does not complete
- The operation keeps waiting or retrying: Check that the locator identifies the intended element and that the target is ready for the action. Review locator readiness controls and the locator or page timeout configuration.
- The element is a custom control: The documented native targets are contenteditable, select, textarea, and input, with boolean values for checkbox, radio-button, and switch cases. For a widget outside those types, use an interaction it supports.
typingThresholdis rejected or unavailable: The property is listed in the next-version reference. Check the API reference for the exact Puppeteer release installed in your project instead of assuming the option exists there.- You expected a timeout option in the fill options object: The reviewed fill-options reference does not list one. Configure locator-action timeout with
setTimeout(), or review the relevant page timeout behavior. - You expected a returned value: The signature returns
Promise<void>. Treat the call as an action and inspect the page separately if you need to verify its resulting state.
