It contains the resource’s full text, a URL, and ranges of text positions that Puppeteer marked as covered. A JavaScript entry may also include raw V8 coverage data.
What fields does a CoverageEntry contain?
The base CoverageEntry interface has three properties:

The ranges are text positions, not source-map objects. An entry also does not arrive with a ready-made coverage percentage: the report gives you text and positions, and you calculate any totals or percentages you need.
What is different about JavaScript coverage entries?
JSCoverageEntry extends the base entry with an optional rawScriptCoverage property containing the raw V8 script coverage entry. Puppeteer excludes that raw data by default unless you change the relevant options.

JavaScript coverage is collected at block level by default. Anonymous scripts are also omitted by default. Anonymous scripts are dynamically created scripts without an associated URL, such as scripts created with eval or new Function. If you request their inclusion, Puppeteer reports them under a debugger://VM URL unless a //# sourceURL comment provides a different one. How do you collect and interpret entries?
Start coverage before navigating to or exercising the page, then stop it to retrieve the reports. The following shows the basic JavaScript flow; it prints each entry’s URL, text length, and ranges. The browser lifecycle is explicit so the example can run as a small Node.js script in a project where Puppeteer is installed.

For CSS, use page.coverage.startCSSCoverage() and page.coverage.stopCSSCoverage(). To inspect both kinds, collect each report and process the returned arrays separately or together. Puppeteer’s Coverage class reference illustrates totaling entry.text.length and summing end - start - 1 across ranges to estimate used bytes, then deriving a percentage. Treat that as a calculation based on code positions and the collected entries, not as a percentage supplied by CoverageEntry.

What collection options and navigation caveats matter?
- JavaScript or CSS: Start the relevant collector for the resource type you need; each stop method returns an array of entries.
- Granularity: JavaScript coverage uses block-level collection by default; options can change the collection granularity.
- Anonymous scripts: They are excluded by default. Enable their inclusion only if those scripts matter to your analysis; their URL behavior is described above.
- Raw V8 data: It is not included by default. Enable it when downstream processing needs the raw script coverage representation.
- Navigation reset: Coverage resets on navigation by default. Setting
resetOnNavigationtofalsedoes not guarantee that data survives: Chrome may discard the previous page’s execution environment and coverage data.
If you need coverage from more than one page, stop collection before navigating away, start a new collection on the next page, and merge the reports in your own processing step. Puppeteer’s documentation points to puppeteer-to-istanbul for converting coverage output into a format Istanbul can consume.
Troubleshooting common coverage surprises
- No entries for a script: Confirm that coverage started before the relevant code ran. Anonymous scripts are omitted by default, so enable their inclusion if that is the missing content.
- A URL looks like
debugger://VM: The entry is an included anonymous script without asourceURLannotation. Add a//# sourceURLcomment when an identifiable URL is useful. - Coverage disappears after navigation: Stop and save the current report before leaving the page, then start a new collection. Disabling navigation reset alone cannot preserve data Chrome discards with the old execution context.
- A percentage is absent: The entry supplies text and ranges, not a percentage. Calculate a metric from those positions, or convert the output for a coverage tool such as Istanbul.
- The report lacks raw V8 details: Configure JavaScript coverage options to include raw script coverage if your processing requires it.
