Install WebdriverIO’s @wdio/visual-service, register it in your WebdriverIO configuration, and call a check method such as browser.checkScreen() from a test. The first run can create a baseline; later runs compare fresh screenshots with that reviewed image and report visual differences. Reliable results depend on capturing the same application state in the same browser and platform.

What WebdriverIO visual tests do

The WebdriverIO Visual Testing service captures screenshots and compares them with baseline images. Its commands can check a viewport, a selected element, or a full page. You can also use visual snapshot matchers. This is a project-managed screenshot comparison workflow; you do not need a hosted visual-testing service to get started.

The service is framework-agnostic across WebdriverIO-supported frameworks, including Mocha, Jasmine, and CucumberJS. Once installed and configured, it adds visual save and check commands and matchers. Check methods capture and compare in one operation; a separate save command is not required before each check.

Register it in the WebdriverIO configuration

Add visual to the services array in your WebdriverIO configuration file. Set the baseline and screenshot folders, and choose a filename format that distinguishes the test and rendering environment. Adapt the following example to your existing configuration and test naming conventions:

export const config = {
  // Keep your existing runner, specs, capabilities, and framework settings.
  services: [
    [
      'visual',
      {
        baselineFolder: './tests/baselines',
        screenshotPath: './tests/screenshots',
        savePerInstance: true,
        formatImageName: '{tag}-{browserName}-{browserVersion}-{width}x{height}',
      },
    ],
  ],
};

The exact exported configuration shape depends on the project’s existing WebdriverIO setup; merge the service entry into that configuration rather than replacing the rest of it. The service options documentation covers folder and naming settings. formatImageName controls the filename, not the storage path. Change folders with baselineFolder, screenshotPath, or method-level folder options. Filenames can identify such details as the test tag, browser and version, device, platform, viewport dimensions, and device pixel ratio. A capability’s logName can help distinguish multiple browser or device configurations.

Write a visual test

Navigate to a predictable application state, wait for application-specific content to settle, then run the check. For example, in a Mocha-style test:

  it('matches the home screen baseline', async () => {
    await browser.url('/');
    await $('#home-hero').waitForDisplayed();

    await browser.checkScreen('home');
  });
});

This example assumes the project already starts the application and its WebdriverIO configuration supplies the appropriate base URL. For dependable comparisons, use stable test data, a fixed viewport, predictable authentication, and a consistent page state. If the page has animations, delayed API data, or rotating content, settle or control those conditions before capture.

Choose the capture scope

  • browser.checkScreen('home') checks the current screen or viewport.
  • browser.checkElement(selector, 'hero') focuses the comparison on a specific element.
  • browser.checkFullPageScreen('page') captures and checks a full page.

Use visual methods for command options and Expect WebdriverIO for matcher-based tests such as toMatchScreenSnapshot and toMatchElementSnapshot. The writing tests guide shows how the visual checks fit into supported test frameworks.

Create, inspect, and update baselines

First run

By default, autoSaveBaseline is true, so a check can create a baseline automatically when none exists. Treat that first image as a proposed reference: make sure the page is in the intended state and review the captured output. If you prefer explicit baseline creation and review, disable automatic saving and use the save workflow documented by WebdriverIO. Avoid combining save and compare calls for initial setup when a check method already creates the baseline.

Review a failed comparison

When a later check differs, inspect the baseline, actual screenshot, and generated diff before deciding whether the change is a regression or an expected design update. A mismatch score or percentage is not a substitute for looking at what changed: even a small difference on a large image can represent a missing control or an important layout shift.

Accept an intentional visual change

After reviewing the actual image and deciding it should become the new expected output, run WebdriverIO with --update-visual-baseline. The flag copies actual images into the baselines and allows the changed test to pass. Use it selectively; running it without review can silently turn a real defect into the new reference. The visual testing FAQ explains baseline updating and confirms that a separate save call is not needed before each check.

Keep screenshots comparable

Pin the rendering environment

Compare screenshots captured in the same platform and browser conditions. Do not interpret every raster difference between Chrome on macOS and Chrome on Ubuntu or Windows as an application regression. Browser updates can alter font rendering, so review baselines after changing browser versions, operating systems, devices, fonts, or the visual service’s comparison engine. WebdriverIO’s considerations explicitly advise keeping screenshots on the same platform.

Control asynchronous rendering and noise

The service waits for fonts to load by default. Its options also let you disable CSS animations, hide scrollbars or blinking carets, ignore selected regions, or enable layout testing, which makes text transparent to focus on layout. Keep ignored regions narrow: a broad exclusion can conceal a real regression. The comparison options include anti-aliasing handling for small edge differences; use tolerance only when it matches what your team intends to catch. See method options and comparison options.

Choose the full-page capture strategy deliberately

For desktop web pages, the default full-page capture uses WebDriver BiDi without scrolling. If content is lazy-loaded or changes as the page scrolls, enable userBasedFullPageScreenshot; it simulates scrolling, captures viewport images, and stitches them together. That approach can take longer, so enable it when the page behavior requires it rather than as a blanket default.

Test actual mobile rendering

Changing a desktop browser’s viewport is not a substitute for testing in a real mobile browser or device. The service documentation covers desktop Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge, as well as Appium-backed mobile browsers, native apps, and hybrid apps. Native and hybrid use need context-specific setup; for a hybrid app, the guide says to set isHybridApp: true. WebdriverIO also advises against headless browsers for this service because the intent is to compare the rendered view seen by users.

Local comparison or hosted review?

The native visual service is a fit when project-managed screenshot baselines and local or CI comparisons meet your needs. A hosted integration may be useful when your workflow specifically needs broader browser or device execution or a hosted team-review process; it is an option, not a prerequisite. For example, WebdriverIO documents a Percy integration, and BrowserStack documents integrating Percy with WebdriverIO. BrowserStack’s SDK integration documentation reports different WebdriverIO version coverage by integration path (up to WebdriverIO 8 for its BrowserStack SDK page and up to WebdriverIO 9 for Percy SDK support). These vendor statements can change; verify the current compatibility for your exact stack before implementing that route.

Troubleshooting WebdriverIO visual tests

  • No baseline exists: Confirm the service is registered and the check is reaching the intended page state. With the default autoSaveBaseline: true, a first check can create the reference. If automatic saving is disabled, create and review the baseline using the documented save workflow.
  • Tests fail after a browser or CI change: Check browser version, operating system, viewport, device pixel ratio, and fonts. Restore the prior environment for a like-for-like comparison or review and selectively update baselines for the deliberate environment change.
  • Fonts or images appear missing: Wait for application-specific content and assets to be ready before checking. The service waits for fonts by default, but that does not guarantee every application image or asynchronous request is complete.
  • Full-page output omits scroll-triggered content: The default desktop WebDriver BiDi capture does not scroll. Try userBasedFullPageScreenshot when page content depends on scrolling, accounting for the slower scroll-and-stitch process.
  • Small rendering differences cause failures: Inspect the diff first. If the difference is limited to edge anti-aliasing and your test goal allows that tolerance, consider the relevant comparison option rather than broadly raising a mismatch threshold.
  • Many tests change after upgrading the service: WebdriverIO’s visual testing documentation says version 10 changed the comparison engine from ResembleJS to Pixelmatch. Pixelmatch uses a perceptual YIQ color model, so mismatch percentages can differ from version 9 even though test method and option names remain the same. Review diffs and update only the baselines that are intentionally changing.
  • A hosted integration does not match the project version: Check which SDK integration path you are following and verify its current WebdriverIO support in the vendor documentation before changing the project setup.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is to capture a clean page image rather than compare WebdriverIO-managed baselines, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. A request can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the example below saves a WebP capture. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
