Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchTo migrate a Selenium 3 suite, first check its language binding, runtime, and browser-driver setup; then update Selenium through your normal package manager, fix W3C capability names and binding-specific deprecated APIs, and run the full suite against the Selenium 4 release you intend to use. Selenium 4 removes the legacy JSON Wire Protocol in favor of W3C WebDriver. The official guide says W3C-compliant code from the latest Selenium 3 is expected to work, but capabilities and Actions are the areas most likely to require attention. Selenium’s migration guide
Before changing the dependency, check your project
Record the current Selenium binding and version, language runtime, browser versions, driver-management approach, and any remote or cloud grid configuration. This inventory helps distinguish an API migration problem from an unsupported runtime, driver mismatch, or provider-specific capability.
- Confirm which test modules and services depend on Selenium; a repository may have more than one binding or version.
- Check the runtime requirement for the Selenium release you plan to install. Selenium 4.13 was the last release with Java 8 support; the Selenium team advised upgrading to at least Java 11 for later releases. Selenium 4.13 release announcement
- Record how local and remote drivers are selected, installed, and configured in CI.
- Note any custom capabilities, especially values passed to a cloud provider.
Use the latest package version compatible with your project runtime and dependencies rather than copying the version numbers in older migration-guide examples. The guide’s package-manager snippets are historical examples, not current version recommendations.
Update Selenium with your package manager
Change the Selenium dependency in the project’s normal dependency declaration or package manager, then resolve and install dependencies as you ordinarily would. Do not mix an unplanned runtime upgrade, driver change, and broad test refactor into the same first step: keeping the change focused makes failures easier to diagnose.

Replace legacy protocol assumptions and fix capabilities
Selenium 4 uses W3C WebDriver and removes support for the legacy JSON Wire Protocol. Update any code or infrastructure that depends on the older protocol rather than assuming a Selenium 4 client can continue speaking it.
Use the standard W3C capability names. In particular, replace legacy version with browserVersion, and platform with platformName. Other standard capability names include browserName, acceptInsecureCerts, pageLoadStrategy, proxy, timeouts, and unhandledPromptBehavior.

- Search capability-building code, JSON configuration files, CI variables, and grid setup for old names.
- Keep standard capabilities at the appropriate W3C level in your session request.
- For non-standard browser or cloud capabilities, use the vendor’s documented prefix and options object. For example, cloud-specific values such as
buildandnamebelong in that provider’s options object; do not send them as unprefixed standard capabilities. - Review Actions-related code if sessions start but input interactions fail; the migration guide identifies capabilities and Actions as areas that may affect users.
These rules apply to the requested session capabilities, not just local browser startup. Remote grids and cloud providers may require their own documented options format.
Apply the fixes for your language binding
Java: use Duration for timeout and wait APIs
Replace calls that pass a numeric duration and TimeUnit with java.time.Duration. For example:
import java.time.Duration;
// With a WebDriver instance named driver:
driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(10));
driver.manage().timeouts().scriptTimeout(Duration.ofMinutes(2));
driver.manage().timeouts().pageLoadTimeout(Duration.ofSeconds(10));
Java’s FindsBy interfaces were removed; they were intended for internal use. Replace direct dependencies on those interfaces with supported WebDriver APIs and page-object patterns appropriate to your project.

Python: pass a Service object for driver setup
Replace the deprecated executable_path constructor parameter with a driver-specific Service object, or make the driver available on PATH. A Chrome example using an explicit executable path is:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.service import Service as ChromeService
service = ChromeService(executable_path="/path/to/chromedriver")
driver = webdriver.Chrome(service=service)
Replace /path/to/chromedriver with the actual driver executable path on the machine running the test. If driver discovery is configured through PATH, initialize the driver without the explicit service path.
C#, Ruby, and JavaScript: inspect each binding’s own deprecations
Update each binding through its project’s normal package manager, then read deprecation output and the migration notes for the exact binding version. The Selenium migration guide’s commands for these ecosystems are illustrative historical examples; do not treat their pinned versions as current instructions.

Run the suite and isolate migration failures
- Build or install dependencies from a clean environment to expose dependency-resolution and runtime incompatibilities.
- Run a small representative set of tests first, including browser startup, a remote session if used, navigation, element lookup, waits, and user interactions.
- Run the complete suite under the same browser and grid configurations used in CI.
- For each failure, identify whether it comes from a removed or deprecated API, a malformed W3C capability, a driver or browser mismatch, or behavior specific to the target Selenium release.
- After fixes, rerun both the focused failing tests and the full suite; retain the dependency and runtime versions used in the validated build.
A successful local test is not sufficient if CI uses a different runtime, browser, driver, grid, or cloud options format. Check the release notes for the selected version when investigating version-sensitive behavior, including changes affecting BiDi, CDP, or driver management.
Troubleshooting common migration problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Session creation rejects a capability | A legacy name such as version or platform, or an unprefixed non-standard capability. |
Use browserVersion or platformName for standard fields. Put provider-specific settings in the vendor’s documented options object with its required prefix. |
| Build or tests fail on Java 8 after upgrading | The chosen Selenium release may require a newer Java runtime; Selenium 4.13 was the final release with Java 8 support. | Upgrade the project runtime to at least Java 11 for later Selenium 4 releases, or select a release compatible with the runtime you must retain. Confirm the exact target’s requirements. |
| Python reports an unexpected or invalid constructor argument | Driver setup still passes the deprecated executable_path constructor parameter. |
Create the driver with a Service object, or configure the driver executable on PATH. |
Java code no longer compiles around timeouts or FindsBy |
It uses old numeric-plus-TimeUnit timeout signatures or the removed internal-use interface. |
Pass Duration values to timeout methods and replace FindsBy usage with supported WebDriver APIs. |
| Actions behave differently or fail after session creation | Input behavior may be affected by the W3C migration or by code relying on older protocol assumptions. | Inspect the relevant Actions calls and validate them with the exact Selenium version and browser or grid combination in use. |
| Tests pass locally but fail on a grid or cloud service | Remote infrastructure may use different browser/driver versions or require provider-specific capabilities. | Compare local and remote session capabilities, browser versions, runtime, and provider options; consult the provider’s current capability format. |
Or skip the browser setup
If your task is capturing a webpage rather than migrating browser automation, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. Its capture flow accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. AI agents can use its MCP tools to take screenshots, get page information, or capture PDFs.
For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe:
