Software tests can document what a system does when they read like clear examples: name a behavior, show the conditions, perform an action, and assert the expected result. Keep them runnable and current, and choose the test type that answers the reader’s question. Tests are maintained examples, not a complete specification: they cover selected cases and can preserve a mistaken expectation.
What makes a test useful documentation?
A reader should be able to understand the behavior being claimed without reverse-engineering a test’s name, fixtures, and assertions. NHS Digital’s testing guidance says tests should act as documentation and recommends focused, independent, repeatable tests that can be run from the command line (NHS Digital testing guidance).
A useful test makes four things apparent:
- Behavior: Its name describes the rule or outcome, not merely the class or method under test.
- Conditions: Setup identifies the relevant input or state without hiding it in unrelated fixture machinery.
- Action: The operation under test is easy to find.
- Expected result: Assertions show the observable outcome that matters.
For example, rejects_an_expired_invitation tells a reader more than test_invitation. The body should make the relevant expiry condition and rejection outcome clear. Keep the test focused on one concept; explain unusual rationale with a brief comment only when the reason is not evident from the example.
Choose the test type for the question
| Reader’s question | Useful test form | What it documents | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| What does this rule or function do for these inputs? | Focused unit test | Local behavior and boundary examples | A mocked or isolated unit may not represent the whole system. |
| What does a user or business process mean? | Acceptance test or BDD scenario | Domain terms and example behavior | Scenarios need to stay concise and connected to executable checks. |
| What does one service expect from another? | Contract test | Agreed message shape and integration expectations | It does not establish that the deployed system works end to end. |
| Can a user complete an important workflow? | A small set of UI or end-to-end tests | A high-level flow through integrated components | These tests take longer and can be more fragile. |
Apple’s testing guidance distinguishes fast, isolated unit tests from integration tests that check component connections and UI tests that exercise common workflows; UI tests are slower and exposed to more app variables (Apple Developer: Testing). The UK Home Office similarly recommends many lower-level tests and fewer end-to-end tests as a general strategy, while explicitly treating the test pyramid as adaptable guidance rather than a quota (UK Home Office: Test pyramid).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Unit tests: document local rules
Use a focused unit test to show how a function or component responds to representative inputs, including important boundaries. State the meaningful input and assert observable behavior. Be precise about scope: a test that substitutes a mock for a dependency documents the unit’s behavior under that mock, not the real integration.
BDD and acceptance scenarios: document shared domain examples
When business stakeholders need to review behavior, write scenarios in the vocabulary they use and connect those examples to executable checks. Cucumber describes collaborative executable specifications as a way to establish shared language for discussing a system (Cucumber: Behaviour-Driven Development). Its tool documentation explains how plain-language scenarios can be executed as tests (Cucumber: Introduction). Keep scenarios about meaningful outcomes rather than implementation details.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Contract tests: document service boundaries
At a service boundary, record the expected request, response, or message and check that each side conforms to the shared contract. Pact describes contract testing as a way to test HTTP and message integrations (Pact documentation). This narrows integration risk, but does not by itself prove that consumers use a provider correctly in production or that the entire deployed system works.
UI and end-to-end tests: document critical user flows
Use UI or end-to-end tests to preserve examples of important workflows that depend on several integrated parts. Their greater workflow fidelity comes with slower execution and more environmental variables. Keep the set focused on critical flows and high-risk behavior rather than trying to encode every rule at the most expensive test level.

How to write tests people can learn from
- Name the behavior. Describe the rule and relevant condition in the test name. A name should help a reader locate the claim before opening the test body.
- Show the example plainly. Keep setup limited to the state that explains the behavior. Make the action and expected result easy to distinguish.
- Cover representative cases. Include normal behavior and consequential edge cases; do not imply that a handful of examples covers every possible input.
- Use domain language at domain boundaries. In acceptance scenarios, prefer terms stakeholders recognize. In lower-level tests, technical terms may be more precise.
- Keep tests independent and repeatable. Avoid order-dependent state and make the intended command-line test run available to maintainers.
- Explain why only when necessary. A concise comment can clarify why an unusual case matters; comments that paraphrase each line add noise.
- Review tests as production documentation. When behavior changes, update, remove, or replace tests whose names or expected results no longer describe intended behavior.
Keep the test suite trustworthy
Tests document the expectations encoded in their assertions, not an independent source of product intent. If an incorrect expectation is accepted, a passing test can preserve a bug. Review whether the expected result reflects the intended behavior, especially when adding tests around a defect.
A green suite means the assertions passed for the cases exercised. It does not mean all requirements or inputs have been covered. ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022 defines an expected result as observable predicted behavior under specified conditions and notes that exhaustive testing is infeasible in nearly all non-trivial situations (ISO/IEC/IEEE 29119-1:2022).

Use the test pyramid as a starting point, not a fixed ratio. The Home Office guidance identifies project needs—including complex integrations, AI, safety-critical applications, short-lived apps, and resource limits—as reasons the mix may need to change. A test strategy should explain why its chosen layers provide useful evidence for this system.
