Cypress documents the feature and a project-level setting to turn canvas capture off, but it does not publish the capture mechanism or a numeric estimate of its performance cost.
What Test Replay shows for a canvas
Test Replay is a Cypress Cloud feature for stepping through a recorded Cypress test run and inspecting application state and related debugging data, including DOM, network activity, console output, JavaScript errors, and element rendering. Cypress’s CI debugging guide says you can see canvas elements as they rendered in the run.
That makes Replay useful when a test failure involves a canvas-based interface: you can inspect the rendered canvas in the context of the recorded run rather than relying only on an error message. Cypress describes what developers can see, not the underlying capture process. Its documentation does not establish that the canvas is recorded as video or explain how its rendered output is captured, so neither should be assumed.
How to enable or disable canvas capture
The canvas control is in the project’s Cypress Cloud settings, in the Test Replay section below the main Test Replay recording toggle. Use the main toggle to control Test Replay recording; use the canvas option below it to control canvas capture specifically.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Open the relevant project in Cypress Cloud and go to its project settings.
- Find the Test Replay section.
- Locate the canvas capture setting below the main Test Replay recording toggle.
- Leave canvas capture enabled when you need canvas rendering context for debugging. If capture is affecting performance or that context is not useful to your team, disable the canvas option and compare test performance in your own CI environment.
Cypress recommends monitoring performance and disabling canvas capture if it causes performance issues. The setting is project-level; the documentation does not give a universal threshold for when a canvas is too large or when the setting should be switched off.
How to weigh visual context against performance
| Choice | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep canvas capture enabled | Failures are difficult to understand without seeing rendered maps, charts, games, or other canvas UI. | Capturing numerous or large canvases can be resource-intensive. Cypress provides no numeric overhead estimate. |
| Disable canvas capture | Your application has many or large canvases and your CI performance comparison shows a cost, or the team does not need canvas rendering in Replay. | You lose that canvas visual context in the replay. |
Make the comparison in the CI environment and test suite that matter to your team. Cypress does not publish a benchmark that predicts the effect for a particular application. Cypress also recommends disabling video recording when Test Replay is enabled to optimize performance; decide whether video is still needed for your workflow’s artifacts.

When canvas content is missing
- Check whether the canvas is in a shadow root. Test Replay does not support shadow DOM canvases. Cypress also lists manual slot assignment as an unsupported shadow DOM behavior; check whether that applies to the component containing the canvas.
- Check the project setting. Confirm that canvas capture is enabled beneath the main Test Replay recording toggle.
- Check Replay support for the run. Cypress’s documented broader limits include test runs recorded below Cypress App v13 and Firefox or WebKit test runs.
- Compare performance with canvas capture disabled. If Replay is costly for a run with many or large canvases, Cypress recommends monitoring performance and turning canvas capture off if it causes issues. There is no documented universal cutoff.
Test Replay is not a screenshot or visual-testing snapshot
Test Replay is a timeline for a recorded run with inspectable debugging data and rendered elements. Cypress’s visual-testing guidance describes snapshots as images, where results depend on a stable application state and consistent rendering environment. A snapshot can help compare appearances; Replay helps investigate what happened during a test run. One does not establish the behavior or guarantees of the other.
When you need a standalone website screenshot instead
ScreenshotNeo is a separate option for developers who need a website screenshot API or MCP server, rather than Cypress’s recorded-run debugging timeline. It does not replace Test Replay or capture a canvas’s historical appearance during a Cypress CI run. For a standalone page capture, ScreenshotNeo’s website screenshot API can return an image or PDF, and its MCP server supports AI agents using tools such as Claude, Cursor, or another MCP client.

Cypress’s Test Replay documentation, checked October 3, 2026, warns that capturing canvas elements can be resource-intensive, especially when an application has many or large canvases. It does not publish a canvas-specific benchmark or describe the internal capture mechanism. Treat the performance effect as application- and CI-dependent, and do not infer a particular capture technique from the rendered result.
