Stabilize the page and capture conditions before loosening pixel-difference thresholds. Make test data repeatable, wait for the UI and its resources to reach the intended state, control animation, and keep the browser, viewport, and rendering setup consistent. In Playwright, toHaveScreenshot() already waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing them with the baseline.

Why visual tests produce flaky images

A visual test can fail even when the intended interface has not changed. The screenshot may catch an animation between frames, capture before a font or image loads, or show dynamic content that differs between runs. Differences in browser and viewport settings can also change rendering. Chromatic identifies non-repeatable data and unreliable resources among causes of unstable tests and recommends fixed input data or seeded randomness (Chromatic’s unstable-test guidance).

Start by identifying what varies. If a pixel changes because the application is in a different state, fix the state. If the change is expected and irrelevant to the assertion, freeze or mask that specific area. A broad threshold is not a substitute for either: it can allow a real regression to pass.

Stabilize the page before changing tolerances

Make the test inputs repeatable

Hold the route, user state, locale, viewport, and test data constant. Replace live or time-dependent values with fixed fixtures where possible. If the application needs random values, seed the random source so each run uses the same values. Also control dates and other time-based inputs when they affect what is rendered.

Wait for the UI condition that matters

Prefer a condition tied to the expected interface—such as a heading becoming visible or a loading indicator disappearing—to an arbitrary sleep. Playwright’s retrying assertions and actionability checks wait for expected conditions; its stability checks include whether an element is moving or has finished animating (Playwright auto-waiting). A fixed delay can be useful for a known, controlled delay, but elapsed time alone does not establish that the right content is ready.

Make sure relevant fonts, images, and other resources have loaded before capture. A page can appear ready while a late font changes line wrapping or an image changes layout. Hosted capture systems also have finite capture windows: Chromatic notes that unreliable image and font sources may fail to load within its capture window (Chromatic snapshots).

Stop motion that is irrelevant to the assertion

Disable CSS animations and transitions for visual assertions when their motion is not what the test is checking. For JavaScript-driven animation, pause the application animation or move the UI to a known stable state. Chromatic explicitly says JavaScript-driven animations are not disabled automatically and must be paused by the test author (Chromatic snapshots).

Keep the rendering setup consistent

Use the same browser project, viewport, and relevant rendering settings for baseline creation and comparison. If a test is expected to run in several projects or viewport sizes, establish and review a baseline for each intended configuration rather than comparing unlike captures. Playwright’s visual comparison documentation covers snapshot setup and options for handling volatile content (Playwright visual comparisons).

Use Playwright screenshot assertions deliberately

Playwright’s toHaveScreenshot() assertion has a built-in stabilization step: it waits for two consecutive page screenshots to produce the same result, then compares the latest screenshot with the expectation. That helps avoid capturing a transient frame, but it cannot make random data, late resources, or application state deterministic for you. See the PageAssertions documentation for the assertion and its options.

A minimal test using the assertion looks like this:

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('product page visual snapshot', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.setViewportSize({ width: 1280, height: 800 });
  await page.goto('http://localhost:3000/products/example');
  await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: 'Example product' })).toBeVisible();
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('product-page.png');
});

Replace the local route and expected heading with the ones in your application. The visibility assertion checks a meaningful readiness condition; the screenshot assertion then performs its own consecutive-capture stability check. Keep the project configuration and viewport used for the screenshot the same when generating and reviewing its baseline.

Choose animation handling intentionally

The screenshot assertion supports an animations option. Use it when the test should capture the UI without CSS motion; use application-specific controls for JavaScript animations. Check the installed Playwright version’s PageAssertions reference for the current option behavior and defaults rather than assuming it covers every kind of animation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mask only content that should not be tested

A mask covers a targeted region in the screenshot comparison, which is useful for content that is legitimately variable and does not matter to the assertion. Keep the mask as narrow as possible: anything inside it is no longer being visually checked. Playwright supports locator-based masks and a configurable mask color (PageAssertions options).

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

If the changing value is important to users, prefer freezing it to masking it. For example, stabilize a date or seeded avatar when their appearance is part of the expected UI. Mask a narrowly selected timestamp only when its changing value is outside the test’s purpose.

Set a difference tolerance only after stabilization

Playwright provides pixel-difference controls, including maxDiffPixels, which can be configured for a project or assertion. A tolerance is appropriate for small rendering variation that remains after the setup is controlled. It is not a way to silence unexplained failures: a large allowance can hide meaningful layout or styling changes. Consult Playwright’s visual comparison guidance for supported threshold settings.

Debug a failing visual diff

  1. Inspect the expected, actual, and diff images. Identify whether the change is a transient state, a resource or font shift, dynamic content, a rendering-environment difference, or an intentional design change.
  2. Reproduce the same inputs. Confirm the route, account state, data, locale, viewport, browser project, and time-dependent values match the baseline run.
  3. Check readiness and resources. Replace arbitrary waits with an assertion for the relevant UI state, and verify that fonts and images needed for layout have loaded.
  4. Control motion or changing content. Disable irrelevant CSS motion, pause JavaScript animation, fix changing values, or mask only the specific irrelevant locator.
  5. Adjust tolerance only if needed. Use the smallest reasonable difference allowance after addressing the source of instability.
  6. Update a baseline only after review. Decide whether the visual change is intended before accepting a new expectation. Do not automatically normalize failed snapshots.

When hosted visual capture helps—and what it cannot fix

A hosted capture environment can reduce variation in browser and device setup. Chromatic describes a fleet of standardized browsers and mobile emulators at specified viewport sizes and uses network quiescence as a capture heuristic. That improves environmental consistency, but it does not make application data deterministic or stop JavaScript-driven animation; those still require application or test controls (Chromatic snapshots).

The available product documentation supports these specific observations, not a current pricing comparison or a complete vendor-by-vendor ranking. A 2020 BrowserStack-hosted report made a historical statement about Percy freezing CSS animations and stabilizing dynamic elements; that dated claim is not enough to treat it as current Percy behavior (State of Visual Testing 2020).

For a one-off website capture, ScreenshotNeo returns an image or PDF from one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers; its capture flow accepts consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents.

cURL example, adapted to capture a site URL:

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. That capture convenience does not replace deterministic test fixtures or a reviewed visual-test baseline. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Troubleshooting common causes

  • The diff changes between identical-looking runs: Look for random, time-dependent, or live data and fix or seed the inputs. Check whether an animation is captured at a different frame.
  • Text wraps differently: Check that the intended font loaded before capture and that viewport dimensions match the baseline.
  • An image or layout appears late: Wait for the relevant element or resource condition instead of relying only on a fixed pause; inspect unreliable resource sources if they miss the capture window.
  • A hosted snapshot still captures motion: Determine whether the motion is driven by JavaScript and pause it in the application or test. Standardized browsers do not automatically make application animation static.
  • A mask makes the diff pass but hides a defect: Narrow the masked locator or remove the mask and stabilize the underlying content if it is part of the behavior under test.
  • A permissive threshold accepts an unwanted change: Lower the tolerance and resolve the underlying instability; review the actual and diff images before changing the baseline.
