Store the tests and their configuration in your repository, install the same browser dependencies in CI, run the suite on pushes and pull requests, and publish test results and screenshot evidence as separate pipeline steps.
What you need to integrate visual tests
- A visual-test suite and configuration committed to the repository your CI platform checks out. Azure Pipelines can use Azure Repos or a connected GitHub repository.
- A browser test runner. Playwright provides documented CI examples for both GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines.
- A CI workflow or pipeline that installs the project runtime, dependencies, and browser binaries before running tests.
- A way to publish machine-readable test results and retain visual evidence such as screenshots, diffs, traces, and reports.
VSTS is the legacy product name; use Azure DevOps and Azure Pipelines when configuring the current service. Azure Test Plans is optional: it adds test-case association and requirement traceability, but is not needed just to run visual comparisons.
Set up a shared Playwright workflow
- Commit the suite. Keep Playwright tests, configuration, and any baseline images in the repository used by the workflow. Make baseline changes reviewable alongside code changes.
- Trigger CI on changes. Configure GitHub Actions or Azure Pipelines to run on pushes and pull requests. Use the same test command and configuration in both places so platform changes do not fork test behavior.
- Install a compatible runtime and dependencies. In a JavaScript project, use the Node.js version your project supports, then install locked dependencies with
npm ci. - Install Playwright browsers and operating-system dependencies. Run
npx playwright install --with-depsin the job before test execution. - Run the suite. Execute
npx playwright test, or your repository’s equivalent script if it wraps that command. - Publish results and preserve evidence. Emit JUnit results if using the Azure Pipelines publishing example below, and configure artifact or test-result attachments for screenshots, diffs, traces, and reports.
GitHub Actions: run on pushes and pull requests
Playwright’s CI guide includes GitHub Actions workflows for push and pull-request events. A workflow should check out the repository, prepare the project’s runtime, install dependencies and browsers, then run the tests. The exact action versions and browser image tags are version-sensitive examples; keep them aligned with the Playwright version in your lockfile.
For screenshot stability, use a consistent environment where possible. Playwright documents containers as useful for consistent screenshots across operating systems. Keep browser version, operating system, viewport, fonts, application data, and other rendering inputs stable. A container helps control some of these variables; it does not guarantee identical output in every circumstance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the suite is large, Playwright documents sharding tests across jobs. Validate that shards use the same browser and rendering configuration, and ensure each shard’s reports and failure evidence remain accessible.
Azure Pipelines: install, run, and publish JUnit results
The Playwright Azure Pipelines example for JavaScript uses Node.js, npm ci, npx playwright install --with-deps, and npx playwright test. For publishing, configure the tests to emit JUnit output, then use Azure DevOps PublishTestResults@2 to merge result files and fail the task when tests fail if that matches your gate policy. Use the Playwright CI guide’s current YAML example as the reference for task inputs, since pipeline task syntax and action versions can change.
Azure Pipelines supports both YAML and Classic pipelines in Microsoft’s automated-testing guidance. The same separation of concerns applies in either format: prepare the runtime and browser, execute tests, publish results, and retain screenshot evidence.
Keep screenshot comparisons meaningful
Visual tests can fail because the page changed or because the rendering inputs changed. Control those inputs deliberately:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Use a consistent browser version and operating system; a Playwright container can help standardize the environment.
- Set a fixed viewport and device scale factor in the test configuration where layout is part of the comparison.
- Use stable test data and predictable application state. Avoid comparing pages that depend on changing user data, timestamps, or third-party content unless those differences are intentional.
- Ensure fonts and other required assets are available in the CI environment.
- Review baseline updates as code changes rather than automatically accepting every changed screenshot.
These practices reduce avoidable variation; they are not a measured guarantee that screenshots will be pixel-identical across every run.

Publish screenshots, diffs, traces, and reports
Test-result publication and failure evidence are separate concerns. A passing or failing JUnit result does not automatically make every screenshot or trace visible in the CI report. Configure the test runner to produce the evidence you need, then publish it in a format and location supported by the pipeline.
Azure DevOps documentation notes that screenshots can help diagnose unattended UI failures. For screenshots run through the Visual Studio Test task to appear as result files in reports, they must be added as test-result attachments. The documented attachment support includes VSTest/TRX and NUnit 3.0 formats. For other result formats, publish evidence as separate build artifacts or use the relevant REST APIs rather than assuming attachments will appear automatically.
When Azure Test Plans is useful
Use Azure Test Plans when the team needs automated methods associated with test-case work items, on-demand execution, requirement traceability, or a combined view of manual and automated testing. Microsoft’s Azure DevOps documentation says: “Test projects are associated with test case work items to provide traceability and enable on-demand execution.” It is an additional planning and reporting layer, not a prerequisite for Playwright screenshot comparisons.

Optional: use Azure Playwright Workspaces
Azure Playwright Workspaces is an optional managed execution route documented for GitHub Actions and Azure Pipelines. It requires a workspace, a region-specific endpoint, and CI authentication. The GitHub setup requires a repository/workflow and GitHub-to-Azure authentication; the Azure Pipelines setup requires an organization and project, a pipeline, and an Azure Resource Manager service connection. This service is an execution option, not a requirement for integrating visual tests.

Troubleshooting common CI failures
Browser executable is missing
Cause: The CI job installed project packages but not the Playwright browser binaries, or its cache does not match the installed Playwright version.
Fix: Run npx playwright install --with-deps after dependency installation. If caching browsers, invalidate or key the cache against the Playwright version.
Tests pass locally but fail in CI with screenshot differences
Cause: Browser, operating system, fonts, viewport, scale factor, application data, or external content differs between environments.
Fix: Standardize the CI image and browser version, pin viewport and scale settings, make data deterministic, and ensure the same fonts and assets are installed. Consider a Playwright container for a more consistent environment.
Azure Pipelines shows test outcomes but no screenshot
Cause: The result publisher received test outcomes, but the screenshot was not included as a supported test-result attachment.
