A flaky visual test produces different screenshots across runs even when you did not intend to change the interface. Diagnose the capture before updating the baseline: compare the changed pixels, inspect the test trace, then stabilize the data, fonts, assets, network activity, or animation responsible. Retries may expose intermittency, but a passing retry does not fix its cause.
Find out what changed before updating the baseline
Start by reproducing the failure with the same browser, viewport, fixtures, and CI environment. Compare the expected and actual screenshots and focus on the changed region. A font swap, missing image, different animation frame, changing timestamp, and genuine layout regression can all create different-looking diffs; they need different fixes.
Use the visual-testing provider’s trace or equivalent diagnostics to inspect network requests, console output, DOM snapshots, and capture metadata. Chromatic specifically recommends starting with the trace to investigate unstable tests: Chromatic’s unstable-test guide. Avoid adding a blanket delay before you know what the test is waiting for. A delay can hide a timing symptom without making the underlying state repeatable.
Remove common sources of nondeterminism
Make data and application state repeatable
Replace random values with fixed fixtures or a seeded generator. Keep the same relevant application state across runs, including dates, user data, and other values that appear in the captured region. If the changed content is supposed to vary, decide whether that variability is part of the behavior being tested.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stabilize fonts, images, and other resources
Use reliable local or static resources where practical, and keep image optimization or compression behavior consistent. Ensure the intended web fonts load before capture; preloading can help when appropriate. A late font can change glyph widths and cause text and surrounding layout to shift. Check failed or late image, font, and stylesheet requests rather than treating every mismatch as a timing problem. Chromatic’s guidance covers resource-loading failures and missing assets: Chromatic resource loading.
Choose an explicit animation policy
For a static-state screenshot comparison, disable or pause motion so runs do not capture different frames. If animation itself is what you need to test, retain it and assert its expected behavior deliberately instead of suppressing it. Chromatic documents pausing CSS transitions, CSS and SVG animations, and videos; its default CSS behavior pauses at the end of an animation cycle, and its configuration can change the pause point. These are Chromatic-specific behaviors, not universal defaults for other capture tools: Chromatic animations.

Mask only content that is intentionally variable
Hide, mask, or normalize a region only when it is genuinely outside the behavior the test is meant to verify. Keep the affected area narrow: a broad mask can conceal a real regression. Playwright’s screenshot assertions provide options for hiding or modifying dynamic regions; check the API documentation for syntax supported by your installed version: Playwright visual comparisons and PageAssertions API.
Use this debugging workflow
- Reproduce the failure. Keep the baseline unchanged and match the browser, viewport, fixtures, and CI conditions as closely as possible.
- Classify the diff. Identify whether the changed area looks like a font swap, missing asset, animation frame, dynamic value, or actual UI change.
- Inspect diagnostics. Review the provider trace, network requests, console errors, DOM state, and capture metadata for evidence tied to the changed region.
- Fix the source. Seed data, control application state, serve stable assets, ensure fonts are ready, or set an intentional motion policy.
- Constrain any mask. Normalize only content that is intentionally variable and outside the test’s purpose.
- Rerun, then assess the baseline. Confirm that captures are repeatable under controlled conditions. Update the baseline only when the visual change is intended.
This sequence is a conservative way to keep a baseline from absorbing an unexplained mismatch; it does not mean every provider uses the same approval process.

Use retries to detect intermittency, not to declare a fix
Playwright retries are off by default and can be configured to rerun a failing test. Playwright calls a test that fails initially but passes on retry “flaky.” That result is useful evidence that the failure is intermittent, but it does not explain why the screenshots differed or show that the cause has been removed. Investigate the first failure rather than treating a green retry as proof of health: Playwright retries.

Compare runner and framework integration, control over animations and dynamic content, handling of fonts and external assets, diagnostics for unstable captures, and whether hosted review and collaboration suit your team. A screenshot API can produce captures, but that alone does not establish that it replaces a visual-regression review system.

Troubleshoot recurring mismatches
- Text wraps differently: Check whether the intended font loaded before capture and whether its asset request is stable. Compare computed layout and DOM state across the runs.
- Images or styles are missing: Inspect network failures, blocked domains, and late requests. Make resource sources reliable and confirm the capture waits for the required content; Chromatic describes asset retries and warnings in its resource guidance.
- Only animated regions differ: Decide whether the test is checking a static state or motion behavior. Pause motion for the former; test the expected behavior deliberately for the latter.
- Numbers, dates, or labels change: Replace random or changing inputs with fixed data or a seeded generator when those values are not the subject of the test.
- The test passes only on retry: Treat that as evidence of intermittency. Examine the first run’s trace and fix the source rather than relying on retries.
- A mask makes the test pass: Narrow it to the smallest intentionally variable region and verify that the surrounding layout remains asserted.
