1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe fastest reliable way to shorten a Playwright Test run is to find its bottleneck, then add concurrency only where tests are independent. Tune workers for the CI machine, remove shared state before enabling test-level parallelism, shard large suites across runners when one machine is no longer enough, and keep expensive diagnostics focused on failures. These changes have different effects: some can reduce full-suite wall-clock time; targeted commands mainly get you feedback sooner or stop spending time on a failing run.
Find what is actually slowing the run
Start with a baseline on the same runner type and with the same browser projects and reporting settings you use in CI. Compare several runs rather than treating one unusually fast or slow result as representative. Playwright documents ways to configure concurrency and diagnostics, but there is no universal speedup figure: results depend on the tests, application, runner, and backend capacity.
Use the baseline to distinguish among likely bottlenecks:
- Runner saturation: CPU or memory pressure rises as workers run concurrently.
- Application or backend contention: more simultaneous tests make the site, database, or external services slower or less reliable.
- Serial work: files run in parallel by default, but tests within each file run in order unless you enable parallel mode.
- Setup or diagnostics: browser installation, project selection, and trace collection add work around the tests themselves.
- Long individual tests: inspect action timings and network requests in Trace Viewer to find slow steps.
Playwright’s documentation summarizes its default behavior as: “Playwright Test runs tests in parallel.” See the parallelism guide and Trace Viewer guide.

Tune worker count for the runner
The workers setting controls how many worker processes run tests concurrently. The current configuration reference documents a default of half the logical CPU cores. Treat that as a starting point, not a target: the best value depends on memory, application capacity, and the resources actually available to the CI job.
Set a deliberate worker count in playwright.config.ts when you need a stable, explicit CI setting:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
workers: process.env.CI ? 2 : undefined,
});
This example uses two workers in CI and leaves the local default in place. Replace 2 with a value you measure on your runner; the example is not a recommendation for every machine. Alternatively, set the count on the command line:
npx playwright test --workers=2
Increase the count gradually while observing total duration, CPU and memory pressure, backend limits, and flaky failures. More workers may improve wall-clock time when the runner has spare capacity, but they do not guarantee linear scaling. If duration stops improving or reliability degrades, reduce concurrency or address the contention before adding more.

Enable test-level parallelism only after isolating state
By default, Playwright runs test files in parallel and tests within a file in order. To allow independent tests within files to run concurrently, enable fullyParallel:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
fullyParallel: true,
});
You can instead enable parallel mode for a particular group with test.describe.configure({ mode: 'parallel' }). Choose the narrower option when only a subset of the suite is safe to run concurrently. The parallelism guide explains the available modes.
Before making tests concurrent, check what they share. Playwright creates an isolated BrowserContext for each test, separating cookies and browser storage, but that does not isolate a shared database, account, file, or application-wide setting. For parallel-safe tests:
- Give each test unique backend data, for example by incorporating
testInfo.testIdinto generated identifiers. - Write screenshots and other test artifacts to
testInfo.outputPath()instead of a shared filename. - Use worker-scoped fixtures or data only when sharing within that worker is intentional and safe.
- Review module-level state and side effects; separate browser contexts do not protect shared JavaScript state or external resources.
- Keep tests that genuinely depend on ordering out of parallel groups, or redesign them so each test establishes and cleans up its own state.
Playwright’s browser-context documentation describes browser isolation; the parallelism guide covers the additional precautions needed for shared data and output paths.

Shard a large suite across CI machines
If one runner remains the limiting factor, run separate portions of the suite on multiple CI machines using --shard=x/y. For example, a three-job pipeline can use:
npx playwright test --shard=1/3
npx playwright test --shard=2/3
npx playwright test --shard=3/3
Each command belongs in its own CI job or runner; running all three sequentially on one machine does not provide the same parallel execution across machines. Ensure every job uses compatible configuration and browser setup, and that tests do not collide through shared backend state.
Shard balance depends on how tests are assigned. Playwright’s next-version sharding guide describes test-level balancing with fully parallel execution; without that mode, files are the assignment unit, so a few very large test files can leave some runners idle while another finishes. Because that guidance is on the /docs/next/ documentation, check it against the Playwright version installed in your project before relying on version-specific behavior. See the sharding guide.

| Choice | Useful when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| More workers on one runner | The runner has spare CPU and memory, and the application and backend can handle more simultaneous activity. | Resource saturation, contention, and test flakiness as concurrency rises. |
| More shards across runners | A single machine is still the bottleneck and CI can run jobs on separate machines. | Runner startup and cost, uneven shard duration, and shared external state across jobs. |
Reduce setup and diagnostic overhead sensibly
Install only the browsers a CI job needs
Use the browser-install guidance for your Playwright setup to install only the engines required by that job; this reduces download and disk work. Likewise, select only the intended configured project when a job is meant to cover a subset of browsers. Do not use narrower installation or project selection to silently omit browser coverage your team requires. See Playwright’s best practices and the configuration reference.
Collect traces where they help most
For CI, Playwright recommends tracing on the first retry rather than tracing every test: continuous tracing adds performance overhead. Configure it in playwright.config.ts:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
use: {
trace: 'on-first-retry',
},
});
Open a trace in Trace Viewer to inspect action timing, DOM snapshots, and network requests. Trace-every-test can be appropriate when the extra observability is worth its overhead, but it is not a free default. See the Trace Viewer guide and best practices.

npx playwright test --last-failed
npx playwright test --max-failures=5
These options can shorten debugging or limit wasted CI work after failures. They do not make a complete successful suite intrinsically faster. Check the CLI reference for command details.
Keep retries as a reliability signal, not a speed setting
Retries rerun failing tests and classify outcomes as passed, flaky, or failed. A test that passes on retry has exposed instability; retries do not reduce the underlying work and can increase total run time. Serial groups are retried together, so a failure can rerun more than one test. Playwright recommends favoring isolated tests that can be run and retried independently. See the retry guide.
Troubleshoot common speed and reliability problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Adding workers does not shorten the run. | The runner, application, or backend is saturated; alternatively, much of the suite is serial. | Compare resource pressure and test timings with the baseline. Lower workers if contention is evident; isolate independent tests before enabling test-level parallelism. |
| Tests fail intermittently only in parallel. | Tests share backend records, accounts, files, module state, or application settings. | Make external data unique, use per-test output paths, and remove ordering dependencies before scaling concurrency. |
| One shard finishes much later than the others. | Work is unevenly distributed, often because files vary substantially in size. | Check how the installed Playwright version assigns shards. Where supported and appropriate, fully parallel execution allows test-level distribution; otherwise, consider balancing file sizes. |
| CI reports a pass after one or more retries. | A flaky test passed on a subsequent attempt. | Use the retry classification and trace to diagnose the failure. Do not treat retry success as a performance improvement. |
| CI setup is slow before tests start. | The job installs browser engines or runs projects it does not need. | Install only browsers needed for the job and filter projects only when the narrower coverage is intentional. |
| Failure diagnosis is slow or artifacts are expensive to collect. | Diagnostics may be too limited or, at the other extreme, collected for every test. | Use first-retry tracing as a CI baseline, then adjust based on the evidence needed and the overhead acceptable to your team. |

Frequently Asked Questions
Does increasing Playwright’s worker count always make tests faster?
No. It can help when the runner and systems under test have spare capacity, but extra concurrency can cause contention or flakiness. Measure on the target runner.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo instead of Playwright for end-to-end tests?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures a page or PDF through an API or MCP tool; it does not replace Playwright’s interactive browser testing.
