First identify which side of FFmpeg’s pipeline failed: the input source or the YouTube output. FFmpeg’s familiar -reconnect options are documented for HTTP; YouTube live publishing usually uses RTMP or RTMPS, so adding HTTP reconnect flags does not make a failed RTMP/RTMPS output reconnect.

There is no established Linode-specific reconnect setting or evidence here that Linode itself is at fault. Diagnose the exact error, output URL and protocol, encoder health, and outbound connectivity before changing network rules.

1. Capture the error and identify the failing side

Before changing the command, save the evidence around the failure. FFmpeg errors such as “connection reset by peer,” “broken pipe,” or “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” are symptoms, not diagnoses on their own.

  • Record the full FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key anywhere you save or share it.
  • Note the FFmpeg version and build, the complete log lines immediately before and after the disconnect, and whether the error names the input or output.
  • Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages at the same time.
  • Determine whether FFmpeg lost the source input, the connection to YouTube, or both.

A YouTube stream key grants access to the stream ingest. Keep it private; YouTube’s setup instructions place the key in the encoder configuration. YouTube: Go live with an encoder.

2. Check the YouTube destination URL and protocol

Copy the stream URL from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an example hostname or a URL from an old command. Check whether YouTube has configured the stream to use RTMPS, then use the matching URL and stream key.

  1. Open the stream setup in YouTube Live Control Room and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  2. Compare the scheme and server in the FFmpeg output URL with YouTube’s values. If YouTube specifies RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL.
  3. If the log reports an SSL error, verify that both the scheme and server are correct. YouTube suggests port 443 if an SSL error persists; use the endpoint and port provided for your stream rather than guessing.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. RTMPS encrypts the connection; RTMP does not. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol and TLS connection you intend to use.

3. Use reconnect options only for an HTTP leg

FFmpeg documents -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error as HTTP protocol options. They may help when the input is an HTTP stream that needs retry behavior. They are not documented as recovery switches for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing output.

RTMP is a separate protocol used to stream multimedia over a TCP/IP network; see the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. If the log shows that the YouTube output disconnected, adding HTTP reconnect flags is not a fix for that output failure. Diagnose the output URL, protocol, encoder state, and network path instead. If the input is HTTP and is the failing leg, consult the HTTP section of the same FFmpeg documentation and apply options to that input.

4. Check encoder output against YouTube’s ingest guidance

A connection can be established yet deliver video that YouTube considers unhealthy. Check the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings against YouTube’s current guidance, and confirm that the VM’s tested outbound capacity can sustain the selected bitrate.

  • Protocol: YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS.
  • Video: YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps.
  • Rate control: Use constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
  • Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3.

For H.264, YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these recommended ingest bitrates:

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimum bandwidth for a Linode instance or proof of the cause of a particular disconnect. Choose a bitrate suited to the actual stream and leave headroom for network variation. YouTube’s full settings and bitrate guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

5. Separate encoding problems from outbound connectivity

Inspect FFmpeg’s local logs and CPU load, and check the source or a local recording if one is available. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes unhealthy encoder output from a stream that looks healthy in the encoder: the former points toward the source, encoder, or system load; the latter can shift attention toward the outbound connection.

  1. Check whether FFmpeg reports encoding errors, missed frames, or resource pressure before the output disconnect.
  2. Compare the encoder preview and YouTube’s stream-health status. If the encoder output itself is unhealthy, investigate the source, codec settings, bitrate, and CPU load first.
  3. If the encoder looks healthy but YouTube reports interruptions or insufficient video, test outbound connectivity from the Linode VM to the actual ingest URL and port.
  4. Inspect the instance’s configured firewall and network rules for the relevant outbound path. Treat this as an environment-specific check, not a presumed Linode fix.

YouTube recommends checking outbound connection strength when the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder. Its diagnostic guidance is available at Troubleshoot your live stream. The available evidence does not establish a Linode-specific port block, firewall default, outage, or bandwidth guarantee.

6. Retest without losing the original evidence

Test before the event using representative motion and audio, then monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages while it runs. Change one relevant variable at a time—such as the destination URL, bitrate, or keyframe interval—and keep the logs from each attempt. This helps distinguish a transport change from an encoder-setting change instead of obscuring the original failure.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube, not from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
