Evaluate Argos closely if you want a documented Playwright reporter and screenshot-helper workflow in CI, or its published screenshot allowances fit your expected usage. Neither is a universal winner: compare the way each handles your actual tests, pull requests, review process, access needs, and monthly volume.
What visual regression testing does
Visual regression testing captures a UI state and compares it with a known-good image. A difference may signal an unintended regression, or it may be an intentional design change. The team reviews the difference, fixes an unwanted change, or accepts an intentional one so it can become the new baseline.
The quality of the workflow depends on more than whether a tool can produce a diff. Your team needs repeatable states, a baseline, a usable review path, and a way to run comparisons in its normal development process.
How the workflows differ
Storybook and component states
Storybook describes Chromatic as a cloud visual-testing service made by the Storybook team: when visual testing is enabled, each story can become a test. Its official addon and in-Storybook review make it a natural evaluation starting point when stories are how your team represents component states. Storybook visual testing

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Argos also publishes Storybook setup material, so Storybook use alone does not rule it out. Compare the actual setup and review experience with the stories your team maintains rather than assuming that only one product can cover them.
Existing Playwright tests
Both products document Playwright workflows, but the capture paths differ. Chromatic documents extensions to Playwright test and expect utilities; its documented process uploads page archives for cloud snapshot generation and pixel diffing. Chromatic Playwright documentation
Argos documents a Playwright SDK and reporter for CI, including screenshot uploads and traces. Its quickstart requires a baseline build on the default branch before pull-request builds can be compared against it. That requirement should be included in your rollout plan. Argos Playwright quickstart

Other test frameworks and browser coverage
Chromatic also documents integrations for Vitest and Cypress, in addition to Storybook and Playwright. Storybook describes Chromatic as cross-browser, but that general description does not establish exact browser coverage for every plan or configuration. Confirm supported targets in the current product documentation and test configuration before relying on a particular browser matrix.
Review, baselines, and CI fit
In either workflow, decide who reviews visual changes and how accepted changes update the reference image. A baseline is a prerequisite, not an automatic guarantee that future diffs will be meaningful: keep test states stable and inspect whether the review output gives your team enough context to distinguish intentional changes from regressions.
Check the specific Git provider, CI system, authentication method, and pull-request permissions you use. Argos’s quickstart documents GitHub Actions and token or OIDC options; Storybook lists CI setup paths. Verify your own repository’s permissions and required checks rather than assuming feature parity from a vendor comparison page.

Which one should your team evaluate?
Start with Chromatic when Storybook is central
- Your stories are the primary catalog of component states.
- You value the official Storybook addon and reviewing visual changes in Storybook.
- You also need to investigate its documented Playwright, Vitest, or Cypress integrations.
Evaluate Argos closely when Playwright CI is central
- You want to assess its documented Playwright reporter and screenshot-helper workflow within CI.
- You can establish and maintain the default-branch baseline build its quickstart requires.
- Its published screenshot-volume and plan details appear relevant to your expected usage, subject to confirming current terms.
Run a representative proof of concept
Before committing, try both with a small set of stable UI states in your actual CI and Git setup. Include a normal pull request, an intentional design change, and an unwanted visual change. Compare setup effort, baseline handling, review clarity, flake handling, access controls, and estimated plan cost. This is a practical evaluation approach, not a report of a head-to-head test.
Pricing: compare the plan you will actually use
Argos’s pricing page lists Hobby at $0 for up to 5,000 screenshots and Pro starting at $100 per month with 35,000 screenshots included. The page also lists additional screenshot rates. These are Argos-published terms verified for this article’s 2026 publication context and may change; check the live page for current limits, overages, and plan features. Argos pricing

Chromatic and Argos are visual regression testing services; ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a like-for-like replacement for their baseline review workflows. If your separate need is to request screenshots or PDFs of websites through an API, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets are removed before capture, and only clean shots are billed.
Or skip the browser setup
Use one GET request to capture a page as an image or PDF. The example below saves a WebP screenshot:
