The most reliable way to convert a Word document, spreadsheet, presentation, or PDF into page images is to export it to PDF first, then rasterize the PDF into a separate PNG or JPEG for each page. This preserves page layout better than trying to turn a multi-page document directly into one image. The exact steps depend on the application and file type; the workflow below uses LibreOffice for PDF export and ImageMagick with Ghostscript for conversion.
Choose the right conversion route
For an editable document, use the application that opens it to create a PDF, then convert the PDF pages to images. The PDF serves as a layout-preserving intermediate: it captures pagination, fonts, tables, and margins before the pages are rasterized. For an existing PDF, skip the export step and render it directly.
- Use PNG for text-heavy pages, diagrams, and line art when crisp edges and lossless compression matter.
- Use JPEG when smaller files matter more than pixel-perfect preservation, especially for pages dominated by photographs. JPEG compression can introduce artifacts.
- Keep the PDF or source file if you need selectable text, editable content, or document accessibility structure. PNG and JPEG pages are raster images, not structured documents.
LibreOffice provides PDF export controls for page ranges, image resolution, and compression. ImageMagick can render PDF pages but requires Ghostscript to read PDF input. See LibreOffice PDF export options and ImageMagick’s format notes.
Export the document to PDF in LibreOffice
- Open the document in LibreOffice and check its page layout, including page breaks, fonts, tables, headers, and margins.
- Choose File > Export As > Export as PDF.
- In the PDF options, choose whether to export all pages, a specified page range, or a selection. Set image compression and resolution as needed.
- Export the PDF to a convenient location. Open it once to confirm the page count and boundaries before converting it.
LibreOffice’s PDF export dialog includes lossless compression and JPEG compression quality options. Lower JPEG quality can reduce file size but loses image information. The Document Foundation’s Getting Started Guide 25.2 says resolutions at or below 100 DPI may be sufficient for computer-screen viewing; print may call for at least 300 or 600 DPI depending on printer capability. These are guide recommendations, not universal requirements: choose based on the destination and inspect small text at the resulting dimensions.

Convert PDF pages to images with ImageMagick
Install the required tools
Install ImageMagick and Ghostscript for your operating system. ImageMagick needs Ghostscript to read PDF files. Installation commands vary by operating system and package manager, so use the official installation instructions for your platform rather than an unverified command.
Render every page as PNG
Run this from a terminal in the directory containing document.pdf:
magick -density 300 document.pdf page-%03d.png
This asks ImageMagick to render at 300 DPI and names pages in order, such as page-000.png, page-001.png, and so on. The density setting affects the rendered pixel dimensions; higher values produce larger images and files. ImageMagick documents PDF rendering and density settings in its command-line options and Convert tool reference.

Render every page as JPEG
Use a JPEG filename pattern and set a quality value if you want to control compression:

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →magick -density 300 document.pdf -quality 85 page-%03d.jpg
JPEG quality is a trade-off: lower quality generally reduces file size while increasing visible compression artifacts. Review fine text and edges before using the output.
Convert only selected pages
ImageMagick lets you address pages with an input frame range. For example, to render pages 2 through 4 (page indexes start at zero), use:

magick -density 300 document.pdf[1-3] selected-%03d.png
Check the resulting filenames and page sequence, especially when processing a range rather than the full PDF. For a long-lived or automated workflow, verify page-index behavior with your installed ImageMagick version and a small sample file.
Set resolution and page boundaries deliberately
Higher render density makes text and detail larger in pixel dimensions but also increases memory use and output file size. A practical choice is the smallest resolution that keeps the smallest important text readable at the intended display or print size. Do not treat a DPI number as a guarantee of readability: the source page size, font size, and final image dimensions all matter.
ImageMagick uses the PDF MediaBox by default. Some PDFs define a smaller CropBox or TrimBox, which may be the desired visible page boundary. If the output includes unwanted margins or content, consult ImageMagick’s documentation for selecting those boxes and inspect the rendered pages. Its PDF format documentation describes the default behavior and box options.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
ImageMagick notes that only some formats, including JPEG, PNG, and TIFF, can store image resolution metadata. Its -resample option changes pixel dimensions to preserve rendered physical size at a specified resolution; this is distinct from merely changing metadata. See the command-line option reference.
Check the output before using it
- Confirm that the number of image files matches the expected PDF page count or selected range.
- Open the first, middle, and last pages to verify page order and boundaries.
- Zoom in on small text, tables, and thin lines; increase render density if necessary.
- Check transparency, margins, and any content close to page edges.
- Compare the result with the PDF if fonts, page breaks, or layout look different.
Troubleshoot common conversion problems
ImageMagick cannot open the PDF
Confirm Ghostscript is installed and available to ImageMagick. PDF input requires Ghostscript; installing ImageMagick alone may not be enough.
The images are blank or pages are missing
Open the PDF itself and confirm it contains the expected pages. Check the filename pattern and page range, then try rendering the full PDF without a range. If the PDF opens but rendering still fails, review ImageMagick and Ghostscript installation and error output.

The output is blurry or text is too small
Increase the density used when rendering, then check the pixel dimensions and file size. Also confirm the PDF itself is sharp: rasterized output cannot restore detail that is absent from the source.
The page has unexpected margins or clipping
The PDF may use a MediaBox larger than its CropBox or TrimBox. Check the intended page boundary and configure ImageMagick accordingly; then inspect all pages, as page boxes can vary.
The output files are too large
For photograph-heavy pages, JPEG may reduce file size. For PNG, consider whether the render density is higher than the destination requires. Avoid lowering resolution or JPEG quality without checking fine text and edges.

If what you actually need is a screenshot of a web page rather than an image of a document’s pages, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API captures a URL as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for document-to-page conversion. One GET request looks like this (API documentation):

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
