One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIn a Chrome extension, call chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab() after a user action, convert its data URL to a Blob, and upload that blob with fetch() from your extension service worker or extension page. Give the extension capture permission and a host permission for the API. The upload method, field name, authentication, and accepted image formats must come from the receiving API’s documentation.
What the extension captures—and what the API receives
chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab() captures the visible area of the active tab and returns a data URL. It does not produce a full-page screenshot. Chrome requires the activeTab permission or the broader <all_urls> permission, and documents a maximum rate of two calls per second. See Chrome’s tabs API reference.
The capture API and the upload API are separate contracts. Chrome provides image data; the service receiving it specifies the HTTP method, endpoint, multipart field name or other body format, authentication, size limit, and response format. Do not assume that every endpoint accepts a multipart upload or uses a field named screenshot.
Set up a Manifest V3 extension
For a capture initiated by the user, activeTab is usually narrower than access to every site. Add a host permission for the API origin so extension-owned code can make the cross-origin request. Replace the example API hostname with the actual host, using the narrowest pattern the API supports.

Chrome also supports optional host permissions, which let an extension request host access at runtime when that better fits its permission design. Keep declared permissions limited to what the feature needs; see Chrome’s permissions guidance.
Capture the visible tab and upload it with fetch
This example uses a multipart POST with a bearer token. Replace the endpoint, token handling, multipart field, accepted format, and response parsing to match the target API. Trigger the function from an explicit extension UI action, such as a toolbar button or popup action.

async function captureAndUpload(apiUrl, token) {
const dataUrl = await chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab({
format: "png"
});
const imageBlob = await (await fetch(dataUrl)).blob();
const form = new FormData();
form.append("screenshot", imageBlob, "screenshot.png");
const response = await fetch(apiUrl, {
method: "POST",
headers: {
Authorization: `Bearer ${token}`
},
body: form
});
if (!response.ok) {
throw new Error(`Screenshot upload failed: HTTP ${response.status}`);
}
return response.json();
}
When sending FormData, do not set the Content-Type header yourself. The browser must add the multipart boundary. If the endpoint expects raw bytes or JSON/base64 instead, implement the documented format rather than adapting this multipart example blindly.
Choose the right execution context
Make the cross-origin request from extension-owned code: the service worker or an extension page. A content script remains subject to the web page’s same-origin restrictions; host permissions do not turn it into a privileged network context. Chrome explains this distinction in its cross-origin network requests guidance.

Pass a fixed, trusted API URL into the upload function. Do not let page-controlled messages choose an arbitrary URL for the extension to fetch. If a content script communicates with the service worker, validate the message sender and expose only the constrained capture-and-upload operation the extension needs. Chrome warns that unrestricted fetch handlers can create access-control vulnerabilities.
Account for the service worker lifecycle
Manifest V3 service workers are event-driven and may become dormant; they also have no DOM access. Handle capture and upload as part of the extension event flow, and return success or failure to the UI rather than relying on an open page or long-lived in-memory state. See Chrome’s service worker overview.

Choose an upload format from the endpoint contract
- Multipart form data: Use when the API documents a file field. Match its field name and filename requirements; let
fetch()set the multipart content type and boundary. - Raw binary: Use only if the endpoint documents a binary request body and specifies the expected content type.
- JSON or base64: Use only if the API explicitly expects encoded image data in JSON. Encoding an image as text can add payload overhead, so follow the service’s documented size limits.
Before implementing the request, verify the exact endpoint URL, HTTP method, required headers, authentication scheme, body format, field names, supported image formats, payload limit, and success/error response shape. Those details cannot be inferred from Chrome’s screenshot method.
Permissions, privacy, and reliability
- Capture after a clear user action. The screenshot can contain personal or confidential information visible in the tab.
- Use HTTPS. Protect both the image upload and credentials in transit.
- Keep credentials out of page scripts. Do not expose a reusable API token to content that the website can control.
- Limit what you transmit and log. Send only the screenshot and metadata needed for the stated purpose; avoid logging image bytes, tokens, or sensitive response contents.
- Handle failures visibly. Report capture, network, and server errors to the extension UI, and do not assume that starting a fetch means the server accepted the image.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Capture permission error: Confirm that the extension has
activeTabor<all_urls>, and that the call targets the active tab in the intended window. - Cross-origin fetch failure: Check that the API host is covered by
host_permissionsand that the request runs in the service worker or an extension page, not a content script. - Server rejects the upload: Check the API’s endpoint, method, authentication, multipart field name, accepted format, size limit, and response requirements. Do not assume Chrome’s capture API defines these.
- Capture calls are throttled: Chrome documents a maximum of two
captureVisibleTab()calls per second. Queue or reduce captures so the extension stays within that limit. - Image stops at the viewport: This method captures only what is visible. Capturing below the fold requires a separate scrolling-and-stitching or other full-page design, which must be validated against the target browser and pages.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an API call that captures a URL rather than an image from the user’s active browser tab, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request with a URL returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its capture flow accepts cookie and consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the page verdict and billing status reported in response headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools: take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures a URL as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request parameters and response details.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chrome extension screenshot the whole page with captureVisibleTab?
No. It captures the active tab’s visible area; a full-page image requires a separate capture approach.
Why does fetch work in the service worker but fail in my content script?
Content scripts remain subject to the page’s same-origin restrictions. Run the cross-origin request from the extension service worker or an extension page, with the API host covered by a host permission.
