Use an explicit wait to pause a Selenium Ruby test until the specific browser state it needs is true. Create Selenium::WebDriver::Wait, then call until with a block that returns a truthy value when it is safe to continue. This replaces arbitrary delays such as sleep with condition-based synchronization.
Use an explicit wait for a specific condition
For example, wait until a submit button is displayed before clicking it:
wait = Selenium::WebDriver::Wait.new(timeout: 10, interval: 0.2)
wait.until { driver.find_element(id: 'submit').displayed? }
driver.find_element(id: 'submit').clickIn a changing page, locate the element inside the wait block, as above. That way, each poll checks the current DOM rather than reusing an element reference that may have become stale. Choose a condition that matches the next action: being present in the DOM is not necessarily the same as being visible or ready for interaction.
The timeout and interval above illustrate the API; they are not universal recommendations. Selenium’s official Ruby example uses a two-second timeout and a 0.3-second interval. Choose values appropriate to the page and test environment.

How Ruby explicit waits work
An explicit wait repeatedly evaluates the block until it returns a truthy value or the timeout expires. It returns that truthy result; if the condition never succeeds, it raises Selenium::WebDriver::Error::TimeoutError. Between attempts it sleeps for the configured interval. The wait can also take a custom message and message provider.
Selenium describes explicit waits as loops that poll an application for a specific condition before continuing. See the Selenium Waiting Strategies guide and the Ruby Wait API reference for the documented behavior and options. Check the API reference matching your installed gem for defaults, since defaults can change between versions.

Wait on the state your next action needs
Use the narrowest useful condition rather than waiting for an arbitrary duration. The official Ruby example checks that an element is displayed before typing into it. Visibility is not sufficient for every interaction, so select a condition that reflects the state your next operation requires.
- Before typing, wait for the target element to be displayed.
- Before clicking, wait for the relevant element state required by your page and interaction.
- If the page replaces elements while loading, find the element again within the wait block so each attempt checks the current page.
Retry selected transient exceptions
By default, the wait ignores Selenium::WebDriver::Error::NoSuchElementError while retrying. You can specify additional exceptions with ignore:. For example, this retries both a missing element and one that is not yet interactable:

wait.until { driver.find_element(id: 'submit').displayed? }Ignore exceptions sparingly. The wait does not swallow exceptions outside its configured ignore list, so unrelated failures will surface immediately instead of being retried until timeout.
Explicit waits versus implicit waits
An implicit wait is a session-wide setting that affects element-location calls. Selenium’s guide says its default is zero, so without a wait a missing element otherwise fails immediately. An explicit wait is local to a chosen condition and can be configured with its own timeout, polling interval, and ignored exceptions.

Do not casually combine the two. Selenium warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable total wait times. Its guide gives an example in which a nominal 10-second implicit wait and a 15-second explicit wait could result in a timeout after 20 seconds. Prefer explicit waits for state-dependent test steps and avoid configuring an implicit wait elsewhere in the test setup.
Troubleshoot wait failures
- The wait times out: The block did not return a truthy value before the deadline. Check that the condition describes the state actually needed, the locator still identifies the intended element, and the timeout suits the environment.
- The test fails immediately: An exception not included in the ignored-exception list is not retried. By default, only
NoSuchElementErroris ignored. Inspect the exception and add another ignored class only if it is a genuinely transient condition. - Waits run longer or unpredictably: Look for an implicit wait configured elsewhere in the test setup. Selenium cautions against mixing it with explicit waits.
- The element is found, but interaction fails: Finding an element does not prove it is visible or interactable. Wait for the condition required by the next operation rather than just element presence.
