Enable full-page capture separately from the viewport, and use the provider’s supported render waits or lazy-load handling when content appears only after JavaScript runs or the page scrolls. Endpoints, polling rules, capture limits, and result retention vary by provider.
What makes a screenshot request asynchronous?
A synchronous API keeps the request open while the browser loads the page and renders an image. An asynchronous API separates submission from rendering: it returns a job identifier or status URL, and you check that job later before retrieving its result. This can suit slow, long, or JavaScript-heavy pages, but the exact response fields and status flow belong to the provider’s API.
For example, Allscreenshots’ .NET SDK documentation demonstrates creating a job, checking its status, and retrieving the result after completion. Treat its SDK and field names as specific to that service, not as a standard shared by all screenshot APIs: Allscreenshots .NET SDK.
Full-page capture is not the same as a viewport screenshot
A viewport capture contains what is visible inside the browser’s current viewport. A full-page screenshot captures the page’s full scrollable area, which can include content far below the initial screen. Microsoft Playwright documents this distinction and provides a fullPage option in its screenshot API: Playwright screenshots.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every lower-page element has loaded. Some sites defer images or other content until the user scrolls near them. A browser may capture the page before those elements appear unless the provider scrolls the page, waits appropriately, or offers another lazy-load strategy.
Build a provider-neutral async workflow
- Choose an API and verify its current contract. Check its official reference for authentication, accepted URL schemes, full-page controls, viewport and output-format options, maximum page or image dimensions, rendering timeout, async job behavior, rate limits, error states, and how long results remain available. These details are not established uniformly across providers.
- Submit a complete capture request. Supply the target URL, full-page setting, intended viewport, and output format. If supported, add a navigation wait or selector wait that reflects when the page is ready for capture. Cloudflare Browser Run documents viewport and navigation-wait settings for its screenshot endpoint; those settings are provider-specific: Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot endpoint.
- Save the job reference before doing anything else. Store the returned job ID or status URL in a durable place appropriate for your application. Your process may restart while rendering continues; without the reference, it may be difficult or impossible to find the result again.
- Poll according to the provider’s instructions. Request job status at the documented endpoint until it reports a terminal state, such as success or failure. Use the prescribed cadence, retry rules, and rate limits. Do not assume that a particular interval, status value, or number of retries applies across APIs.
- Retrieve and validate the result. On success, use the provider’s documented result mechanism and save or process the image. On failure, surface the provider’s error information. Confirm how expired results are reported and whether a failed or incomplete job can be retried.
- Inspect the image, not just the HTTP response. Check for missing content near the bottom, blank or error pages, and incomplete JavaScript rendering. A successful job can still produce a screenshot that does not meet the application’s needs.
Make long and JavaScript-heavy pages render reliably
Choose a meaningful readiness condition
“Page loaded” can mean different things to a browser renderer. A navigation event may occur before a single-page application has populated its content, while waiting for all network activity to stop may be unsuitable for pages with persistent connections. Prefer the provider’s documented navigation, selector, or delay options, and choose a condition tied to the content you need. Cloudflare warns that JavaScript-heavy pages or SPAs may be incomplete under default loading behavior; consult its current guidance rather than assuming a default wait fits every site: Cloudflare Browser Run screenshot endpoint.

Account for lazy-loaded content
For a page that loads images or sections as the user scrolls, determine whether the provider scrolls before capture and whether you can configure scroll intervals or waits. Allscreenshots’ full-page guide describes scroll intervals and bounds such as maximum height, sections, and timeout. These are examples of controls offered by that provider, not universal API parameters: Allscreenshots full-page screenshots.
Test a representative page with the same kinds of deferred content as your production targets. If lower sections are absent, try the API’s supported scroll or lazy-load handling, adjust a supported wait, or set reasonable page-height and elapsed-time bounds. Larger or slower captures can consume more rendering time, so balance completeness against the provider’s timeout and limits.

Bound the work
Before deploying, establish a maximum capture height or other provider-supported bounds, and decide what your application should do when a job exceeds its time budget. Without bounds, an unusually long page can delay processing or run into the service’s constraints. No common maximum height, timeout, or retention period can be inferred for all APIs.
What to compare when choosing an API
Screenshot APIs differ in their job lifecycle and rendering controls, so compare documented behavior rather than relying on the word “async” alone.

| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Async job creation, status checks, and result retrieval | Confirms how your application tracks work and handles completion, failure, or an expired result. |
| Full-page capture and its limits | Determines whether the service can capture the whole scrollable page and how it constrains very tall pages. |
| Navigation, selector, or delay waits | Helps account for pages whose meaningful content renders after initial navigation. |
| Lazy-load strategy | Shows whether deferred content is triggered by scrolling or requires another approach. |
| Maximum dimensions and rendering timeout | Sets practical bounds for long pages and helps avoid jobs that cannot finish within your application’s needs. |
| Output formats and retrieval mechanism | Ensures the result can be saved or consumed by downstream systems in the required form. |
| Authentication, quotas, and rate limits | Informs secure key handling, throughput planning, and polling behavior. |
| Terminal errors and result retention | Determines how to recover from failed jobs and how quickly completed results must be fetched. |
Documentation examples illustrate individual features, not a common benchmark or a complete, directly comparable set of limits. Confirm the current API reference for the service you intend to use. For instance, pageops describes conditions under which a synchronous request may fall back to async, but behavior should be checked against its current reference: pageops screenshot API.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting asynchronous captures
- The status stays pending. The render may still be queued or running. Continue at the provider’s prescribed cadence, check its queue or timeout guidance, and avoid uncontrolled rapid polling.
- The job fails or never returns a result. Read the provider’s terminal error details and verify the target URL, authentication, supported settings, and documented timeout or dimension limits. Check whether the result endpoint is available only after a particular success state.
- The screenshot stops at the initial viewport. Confirm that full-page capture is enabled. A viewport-sized image is not evidence that the async workflow failed; capture scope is a separate setting.
- The bottom of the page is blank or missing images. The page may use lazy loading. Use the provider’s supported scrolling or wait controls, inspect a representative page, and check any maximum-height or section bounds.
- Content is missing even though navigation completed. JavaScript may still be rendering. Use a supported selector or navigation wait tied to the required content, or a suitable delay when the provider offers it. Default load behavior may not be sufficient for an SPA.
- Polling is throttled or costly. Check the provider’s rate limits and recommended cadence, then implement bounded retries with backoff if its guidance allows. Do not presume polling frequency is free or unlimited.
- A completed result cannot be fetched later. The provider may have a result-retention window. Verify that policy and retrieve the image promptly after completion; persist the image or your own durable copy if your workflow needs longer-term access.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does asynchronous capture automatically make a screenshot full-page?
No. Async describes when the result is rendered and retrieved; full-page describes how much of the page is captured. Enable full-page capture separately.
How often should I poll a screenshot job?
Follow the chosen provider’s documented cadence and rate limits. There is no universal polling interval.
