Waterfall and the V-model suit more predictable work; iterative approaches such as Agile suit projects where requirements or user needs may change; Spiral is designed to revisit risk as complex work progresses. No single model is right for every project.
What an SDLC model describes
The software development life cycle (SDLC) is a structured, iterative way to build, deliver, and maintain software. A broad SDLC covers planning, analysis, design, coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance. The model describes how a team arranges those activities and whether—and how—it revisits them as the work proceeds.
Common models include Waterfall, V-model, Agile, Iterative, Spiral, Lean, rapid application development (RAD), and Big bang. These are different ways to organize development, not guarantees of a particular outcome. In particular, Agile is an approach associated with frameworks such as Scrum and Kanban; those framework names are not synonyms for every SDLC model.
SDLC models compared
| Model | How work proceeds | Potential fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| Waterfall | Work moves through stages in sequence, with a stage completed before the next begins. | Clearly defined projects with stable requirements that benefit from a structured, predictable process. | Returning to a completed stage to accommodate a change can be difficult and time-consuming. |
| V-model | A Waterfall variation that pairs lifecycle phases with corresponding testing phases. | Stable-requirement work where testing needs to be planned alongside development. | It retains a linear structure, so it offers limited flexibility when requirements change. |
| Agile | Development proceeds in small increments, with regular discussion and review. | Projects where requirements may change and stakeholders can provide frequent input. | It depends on ongoing collaboration and feedback; it is not simply a different name for Scrum or Kanban. |
| Iterative | The team creates an initial version and refines it in successive cycles. | Work where the team can learn from each version and build outward over time. | Progress depends on using each cycle to inform later work; an initial version is not necessarily a finished product. |
| Spiral | Each cycle sets objectives, analyzes resources and risks, develops and tests, and plans the next iteration. | Complex or high-risk projects where change is expected and recurring risk analysis is important. | The repeated risk-analysis work is central to the approach and must be part of the team’s planning. |
| Lean | Development applies waste-reduction and continuous-improvement principles. | Teams focused on quality practices, shorter feedback loops, and reducing process waste. | Its distinguishing emphasis is on improvement and waste reduction rather than a fixed sequence of lifecycle stages. |
| Rapid application development (RAD) | The team uses rapid prototypes and user feedback instead of relying on a long initial planning period. | Projects where user needs should be tested and adapted quickly. | It relies on feedback to shape the work; it is not the same as proceeding without user input. |
| Big bang | Work has minimal structure and little upfront planning. | IBM characterizes it as potentially suitable for small projects with self-explanatory parameters. | It is high risk; minimal planning makes it a poor default for complex or uncertain work. |
How Agile, Scrum, Kanban, and iterative work relate
Agile and iterative development both use cycles, but the terms describe different things. Iterative describes refining a solution through successive versions. Agile emphasizes incremental changes and regular discussion or review, especially where stakeholder input and changing requirements matter.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Scrum and Kanban are common frameworks associated with Agile. Scrum organizes work into time-boxed sprints. Kanban uses a continuous workflow and a visible task board. A team may choose a framework to organize its work within an Agile approach; neither framework is another name for Waterfall, Spiral, or all iterative development.
How to choose an SDLC model
-
Are requirements clearly defined, or likely to change?
If requirements are stable and well-defined, Waterfall or the V-model may provide an appropriate structured approach. If requirements are likely to evolve, consider an iterative approach such as Agile, provided stakeholders can participate in feedback and review.

How complex or risky is the project?
For complex or high-risk work where change is expected, Spiral makes risk analysis part of each recurring cycle. That makes it a relevant option when risk needs continued attention rather than a one-time review.
-
How should testing fit into development?
The V-model explicitly pairs lifecycle phases with testing phases. Consider whether that alignment suits the project, while accounting for the model’s linear structure if requirements may change.

Can users or stakeholders give feedback regularly?
Agile relies on regular discussion and review, while RAD uses rapid prototypes and user feedback to adapt to user needs. If frequent input is not available, be cautious about choosing an approach that depends on it.
-
What does the team need from its process?
Team experience is one factor in model selection. If reducing waste, emphasizing quality practices, and shortening feedback loops are priorities, Lean principles may be relevant. Choose a process the team can apply consistently, not just one whose label sounds appropriate.

A practical decision guide
- Stable requirements, sequential work: consider Waterfall.
- Stable requirements and testing explicitly paired with lifecycle phases: consider the V-model.
- Changing requirements and regular stakeholder feedback: consider Agile.
- A solution expected to improve through successive versions: consider Iterative development.
- Complex or high-risk work with expected change: consider Spiral.
- Waste reduction and continuous improvement: consider Lean principles.
- User needs that need quick prototyping and feedback: consider RAD.
- A small project with self-explanatory parameters and minimal upfront planning: Big bang is a possible but high-risk fit.
These are starting points, not automatic assignments. Compare requirements stability, complexity and risk, testing emphasis, feedback availability, flexibility, and team experience before deciding. A project can also require teams to adapt how they apply a model; the model name alone does not establish that the process will suit its constraints.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to decide before adopting a model
- Record which requirements are settled and which are expected to change.
- Identify the project’s major risks and decide whether they need repeated review during development.
- Agree on how testing will relate to design and development, and how changes will be handled.
- Confirm who can provide user or stakeholder feedback and how often.
- Check that the team has the experience and capacity to follow the selected process.
These checks turn the model choice into a practical working agreement: what the team expects to learn, when it will review progress, and how it will respond if assumptions change.

If your development workflow needs website screenshots for reviews, QA, or documentation, ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A single GET request can return an image or PDF. Its capture process can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures a page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and setup:
