If your requirement is that visual-test screenshots and baselines stay inside your infrastructure, first ask Applitools about its documented on-premises deployment: it says images are stored locally. If you need an independently operated workflow, Visual Regression Tracker is the clearest self-hosted server candidate in the available product documentation; Playwright Test and BackstopJS are lighter-weight options you run and maintain yourself. These choices are not proven equivalents to Eyes’ visual AI or managed review workflow.

“Self-hosted” can mean either that data remains private or that the entire testing and review service runs on infrastructure you operate. Those are different requirements, so confirm which one applies before choosing.

Which Applitools Eyes alternative fits a self-hosted requirement?

Option Deployment and data handling Documented workflow What to verify
Applitools Eyes private deployment Applitools documents a dedicated private cloud and an on-premises mode. Its on-premises description says the server is installed in the customer network and images are stored locally. Eyes SDKs can be configured to use a private server URL. Current eligibility, contract, infrastructure, data flows, upgrade responsibilities, and pricing. Private cloud is vendor-hosted, not on-premises.
Visual Regression Tracker The project describes an open-source self-hosted service, Docker setup, and data kept in the intranet. Baseline history, ignored regions, and connections to multiple automation frameworks. Current maintenance, security, access controls, storage, scaling, and whether the review workflow suits your team.
Playwright Test screenshot assertions Runs in your test or CI environment; reference snapshots can be kept in your repository. Generate a baseline, compare later screenshots, configure pixel-difference options, and update snapshots deliberately. Consistent browser and host rendering, plus your own review, permissions, history, and baseline-promotion conventions.
BackstopJS Local execution is documented, including Docker. Configured screenshot tests and generated reports. Current maintenance, browser support, baseline approval workflow, and operational effort.
Chromatic Hosted cloud service. Its Playwright integration uploads captured UI archives to Chromatic. Snapshot capture, pixel diffing, and cloud review; self-hosted Git can provide repository history. It does not self-host the testing and review service, so archive uploads may not meet strict data controls.

The project documentation describes capabilities; it is not independent validation of production readiness, security, release health, or support commitments. Current comparable prices and detailed feature parity were not established in the reviewed product materials. Treat the table as a deployment and workflow guide, not a price or parity ranking.

Check whether Eyes itself can meet the deployment requirement

Applitools describes enterprise cloud, private cloud on a dedicated server, and on-premises deployment. Its on-premises description says the Eyes server is installed inside the customer’s network and images are stored locally. It also says remote upgrades and service packs create vendor overhead and that this option costs more. This is product documentation, not a current quote or confirmation that a particular deployment is available to your organization.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

A separate Applitools support article, dated May 8, 2023, describes setting a private server URL in SDKs including Java, Python, C#, Cypress, Storybook, and WebdriverIO. Check the current SDK documentation and your contract for exact configuration and supported deployment options. Applitools Eyes SDK documentation and the SDK configuration reference.

Ask Applitools to document exactly where screenshots, baselines, metadata, and review data reside; which services remain vendor-operated; who handles upgrades; what network access is required; and what current costs apply. A private cloud may address a data-residency constraint while still leaving the service vendor-hosted.

Visual Regression Tracker: a self-hosted review server

Visual Regression Tracker (VRT) is the strongest documented self-hosted server candidate among these options. Its project describes it as open source and self-hosted, with Docker-based setup and data kept in the intranet. It also lists baseline history, ignored regions, automation-framework integrations, and support through JavaScript, Java, Python, .NET, or REST. The project describes testing screenshots from web, mobile, and desktop applications, plus PDF comparison through a standalone Java tool. See the Visual Regression Tracker project.

That breadth may be useful if a team wants a central baseline and review service rather than snapshot files alone. Before adopting it, validate current releases, authentication and authorization, storage and backup design, scaling behavior, and maintenance expectations against your own deployment requirements. The project’s description alone does not establish a security posture or support commitment.

Playwright Test: keep screenshot assertions with the tests

Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() creates reference screenshots on the first run and compares later runs against them. This is a practical route when your tests already use Playwright and you want to own the execution environment and snapshot files. The official documentation explains screenshot assertions and their options at Playwright visual comparisons.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

test('homepage matches its reference', async ({ page }) => {
  await page.goto('https://example.com');
  await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('homepage.png');
});

Run the test with npx playwright test. On the first execution, Playwright creates a reference snapshot; subsequent executions compare against it. Review and commit approved reference changes deliberately rather than accepting every generated update.

Control rendering before interpreting a diff

Playwright warns that screenshots can vary with the operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Generate and compare snapshots in the same controlled environment—often a pinned CI image—to avoid treating environment drift as a product change. A repository-based workflow also means your team must decide how reviewers approve diffs, protect baseline changes, manage history, and handle permissions.

Pixel comparison options and screenshot styling can help tune the comparison or suppress dynamic regions. Use them carefully: masking or ignoring a region can hide a real regression as well as harmless variation. Keep browser, OS, fonts, viewport, and test data stable first; then adjust comparison behavior only for known sources of noise.

BackstopJS: run configured screenshot tests locally or in Docker

BackstopJS is another locally executable screenshot-regression option. Its official repository documents a Docker execution flag and Docker image workflow. You configure tests and inspect the generated reports, while taking responsibility for the surrounding workflow and maintenance. See the BackstopJS repository.

The reviewed project material does not establish a current feature matrix comparable with Eyes or VRT. Confirm supported browsers, current project activity, baseline approval practices, CI integration, and the effort required to operate it before standardizing on it.

Why Chromatic is a boundary case, not a self-hosted replacement

Chromatic’s Playwright integration captures a UI archive and uploads it to Chromatic’s cloud for snapshots, pixel diffs, and review. It can use a locally hosted repository or self-hosted Git provider to track history, but that does not move the testing and review service onto your infrastructure. If policy prohibits uploading captured UI archives, Chromatic does not meet a strict self-hosted-service requirement. See Chromatic’s Playwright setup.

Choose by data location, review workflow, and ownership

  • Need Eyes and private deployment may satisfy policy: ask Applitools to confirm the current on-premises or private-cloud arrangement, its data flows, and the responsibilities and costs in writing.
  • Need a central service you operate: evaluate Visual Regression Tracker, then validate its security, maintenance, and operational fit in your environment.
  • Already use Playwright and want repository-oriented checks: use screenshot assertions if you can keep rendering consistent and establish a reliable review and baseline-update process.
  • Prefer a local/Docker test workflow: assess BackstopJS against your browser, reporting, and maintenance needs.
  • Can use a hosted service but not upload archives: rule out Chromatic’s documented Playwright flow unless its data handling is acceptable to your policy.

For each candidate, answer these questions before migration:

  • Where do screenshots, references, metadata, and review artifacts live, and which leave your network?
  • Does the tool provide the baseline history, ignored regions, review and approval process your team needs?
  • Which browser, operating-system, device, and framework combinations are actually supported for your use case?
  • Who owns CI integration, access control, upgrades, storage, backups, and incident response?
  • What does the deployment cost in licensing and engineering operations? The cited materials do not provide comparable current prices or total-cost figures.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. For website captures, it is the alternative to try first when you want a simple request rather than managing a browser capture setup: cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and an MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. It provides 1,000 screenshots a month free with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

One-call cURL example (replace the target URL as needed):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo is a capture API, not a self-hosted visual-regression baseline and approval service, so confirm that it fits your data and workflow requirements. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does self-hosted Git make Chromatic self-hosted?

No. Chromatic’s Playwright integration uploads captured UI archives to its cloud; a self-hosted Git provider does not relocate its testing and review service.

Are any of these alternatives proven equivalent to Eyes’ visual AI?

The cited product materials do not establish parity with Eyes’ visual AI, cross-platform coverage, or managed review workflow. Compare the specific capabilities and workflows you require.
