To approve a visual change in Chromatic, accept its changed snapshot only if the new appearance is intentional. That updates the comparison baseline. For team sign-off on the pull request, use the separate Chromatic UI Review: inspect its Changeset, resolve discussions, and approve the Review. If merge must be blocked until checks pass, require the appropriate Chromatic status check in your Git provider.

First, distinguish snapshot acceptance from pull-request approval

Chromatic’s UI Tests compare the current story snapshots with accepted baselines and run visual and interaction checks in CI. Accepting a changed snapshot says that the new image is the reference for future comparisons; it does not mean the whole team has approved the pull request. Denying a snapshot marks it as denied and fails the build. See Chromatic’s pull request workflow and Quickstart.

UI Review is the separate stakeholder sign-off flow. It compares the pull request’s head branch with its base branch, presents the relevant visual changes, and tracks discussions and approvals. The distinction matters: UI Tests help catch regressions; UI Review helps the team decide whether the proposed changes are acceptable. Details are in Chromatic’s Review documentation.

Accept or deny a changed snapshot

  1. Open the Chromatic build linked from the pull request.
  2. Inspect each changed story snapshot and its diff. Compare the new image with the accepted baseline and check that the change matches the code change you expect.
  3. If the visual change is intentional, accept it. Chromatic updates the baseline used for later comparisons. Its documentation says, “If the changes are intentional, press the accept button to update the baselines.”
  4. If the change is a regression, deny it. The build fails; correct the code and run a new build rather than accepting the unwanted appearance.
  5. Review the build result after all changed snapshots have been handled. When changes are accepted, the build can pass, subject to the project’s other checks and configuration.

Get stakeholder sign-off in UI Review

  1. Open the UI Review associated with the pull or merge request, then inspect its Changeset. The Changeset compares the head branch with the base branch and focuses the review on what would change when the branch is merged.
  2. Assign the relevant designers, product managers, or other collaborators as reviewers from the Review Activity screen. Chromatic emails assigned reviewers a link. A project can also have default reviewers configured on its Manage page; assigned default reviewers must approve for the Review to pass.
  3. Use discussions on individual changes to ask questions or request work. Resolve a discussion after the requested point has been addressed.
  4. Approve the Review when the visual changes are acceptable. Its checklist tracks Changeset approval, resolved discussions, and approvals from assigned reviewers.

For current project-specific controls and labels, consult the Review guide.

Make the right Chromatic check required before merge

A linked Git provider can receive separate Chromatic statuses for UI Tests and UI Review. In the provider’s branch-protection or rules settings, require the status that matches your merge policy: require UI Tests to gate on test results, and require UI Review when stakeholder feedback and sign-off must be complete. Follow Chromatic’s mandatory PR checks guidance for configuration details.

A required check only gates reliably when Chromatic and CI report its result. If a status remains pending, check whether the check is disabled in Chromatic project settings and whether the relevant CI step actually runs. Also account for the documented behavior that a build run with --skip is marked skipped and passes immediately, even if the commit has visual changes. Decide whether that behavior is compatible with your repository’s merge policy.

Automatic and manual UI Reviews behave differently

Linked GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket integrations can trigger UI Reviews for pull or merge requests. Chromatic’s automatic-review FAQ documents an exception: GitHub Enterprise Server does not trigger a Review when the pull request opens, although a Review is created when a build runs on the pull-request branch. Check the automatic UI Review FAQ if the expected review does not appear.

You can create a manual UI Review to compare branches without a linked Git provider, as long as each branch has a build. A manual Review does not automatically create a Git-provider status check; Chromatic documents a custom webhook as a possible way to create one. See Manual UI Review.

Do not treat every green CI result as human approval

The GitHub Actions configuration can affect what a successful job means. Chromatic documents that exitZeroOnChanges can let the action exit successfully when it finds changes without accepting them, while autoAcceptChanges accepts detected changes. Inspect your configured options before interpreting a green job as either baseline acceptance or human sign-off. Chromatic also recommends running its step on push events and notes that GitHub’s pull_request event can produce unexpected baseline behavior in some configurations. See Chromatic’s GitHub Actions guide and CI documentation.

Troubleshoot a review or check that is not completing

  • A changed snapshot is still failing: inspect the diff and decide whether it is intended. Accept an intentional change or fix and rebuild after a regression; do not assume the pull-request review itself has completed.
  • The UI Review is missing: check that the Git provider integration is linked and that a build exists for the pull-request branch. For GitHub Enterprise Server, a Review may be created on a branch build rather than when the PR opens.
  • A required status stays pending: verify that the relevant check is enabled in project settings and that its CI step runs for the event and branch in question.
  • A manual Review has no provider status: this is expected without a linked provider status flow; a manual Review does not automatically create that check. If you need one, review Chromatic’s custom-webhook option.
  • CI is green despite unaccepted changes: inspect whether exitZeroOnChanges is configured. Also confirm whether autoAcceptChanges is accepting snapshots automatically; these settings have different consequences.
  • A skipped build passes: Chromatic documents that --skip marks a build skipped and passing. Review your CI conditions and merge policy if that is not acceptable.
