AI can draft unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, but its output is a starting point—not proof that your code is correct. Give it the implementation, relevant project conventions, and explicit expected behaviors; then inspect the assertions, run the tests, debug failures, and add missing cases. VS Code documents this workflow, and GitHub likewise advises reviewing and supplementing generated tests.
How do I generate tests with AI?
Use an IDE assistant or coding assistant that can see the code you want to test. A reliable workflow is to define the behavior first, provide project context, request a focused test draft, review it, and run it with the project’s normal test runner.
- Define the behavior: list expected results for ordinary inputs, boundary values, invalid inputs, errors, and important interactions.
- Provide context: include the implementation and, if available, a nearby test file. Name the language, framework, conventions, fixtures, and mocking approach.
- Request specific tests: ask for named scenarios and meaningful assertions rather than “complete coverage.”
- Review the draft: check imports, setup, fixtures, mocks, and whether each assertion verifies public behavior rather than incidental implementation details.
- Run and debug: execute the tests using the project command or IDE runner. Separate syntax and setup errors from failures that reveal a behavior mismatch.
- Fill gaps: compare the final cases with the behaviors you identified, then add scenarios the assistant omitted.
GitHub’s test-writing guide says generated tests may not cover every scenario and recommends reviewing the code and adding tests as needed. Read GitHub’s guidance.
Can AI write unit tests for my code?
Yes. AI coding assistants can draft unit tests for a function or module, and can also help draft integration and end-to-end tests. The useful level depends on what behavior you need to verify: a unit test isolates a smaller piece of logic, an integration test checks components working together, and an end-to-end test exercises a broader user-facing flow. VS Code’s testing documentation includes prompts for all three levels.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a unit test, ask for concrete inputs and expected outputs, including boundary and error cases. For integration or end-to-end tests, describe the interaction or flow and identify relevant dependencies, fixtures, or setup. Review the proposed scope before accepting the code: a test that looks plausible may still call the wrong code, assert the wrong result, or depend on an unstated assumption.
How do I get AI to test edge cases?
Name the edge cases directly instead of asking the assistant to “test everything.” Consider empty or missing values, minimum and maximum valid values, values just outside a boundary, malformed input, expected exceptions, and relevant state or dependency failures. Which cases matter depends on the requirements and the code.
Try a prompt such as:
Write tests for [function or module] using [framework] and the conventions in [existing test file]. Cover [normal cases], [boundary cases], and [failure behavior]. Test the public behavior rather than private implementation details. Return the test code and list any assumptions.

This is a prompt pattern, not a guarantee of completeness. If product behavior is ambiguous, clarify it before asking for tests: implementation alone may not reveal what the product is supposed to do.
What context should I give an AI test generator?
- The code under test: identify the function, module, or flow and provide its implementation or relevant file context.
- Existing tests: share a nearby test file where possible. It can show the framework and project conventions the new tests should follow.
- Test setup: name fixtures, setup and teardown requirements, mocks, and any dependencies that need special treatment.
- Expected behavior: describe inputs, outputs, side effects, error handling, and edge cases in observable terms.
- Constraints: say whether to avoid private implementation details, preserve existing conventions, or report assumptions rather than inventing behavior.
VS Code documents including file context and framework instructions in prompts; GitHub recommends making existing tests available to help align suggestions with the project’s framework.
How should I review AI-generated tests?
Read each test as a claim about what the software must do. Check that it exercises the real code under test and that the assertion would fail if a plausible bug were introduced. A test that only repeats the implementation’s logic, checks an irrelevant detail, or never asserts an outcome adds little protection.

- Does the test name describe the behavior being protected?
- Do the inputs and expected results match requirements?
- Are mocks and fixtures appropriate, and are setup and cleanup correct?
- Does the assertion check a meaningful result or side effect?
- Does the test cover the requested boundary or failure case, rather than only the happy path?
- Would the test catch a relevant regression without depending on an incidental implementation detail?
A passing suite means the tests passed under the conditions in which they ran; it does not establish that the tests cover the important behaviors. Coverage can help locate code that lacks tests, but a high coverage figure is not equivalent to meaningful assertions or correctness.
How do I run and debug the generated tests?
Use the same command and environment the project normally uses, so generated tests are checked against the actual framework and dependencies. In VS Code, discovered tests can be run and debugged through Test Explorer or the editor; see the VS Code testing guide.
Recommended Free Tools
- Run the test file or relevant test subset first, then run the broader suite when appropriate.
- If a test does not start, check syntax, imports, framework configuration, fixtures, and dependencies.
- If an assertion fails, compare the expected result with the requirement and actual behavior. Decide whether the code, test, or assumption is wrong.
- Ask the assistant to address a specific failure only after deciding the intended behavior. Do not weaken an assertion merely to make the suite pass.
- After edits, rerun the affected tests and any broader suite needed to check for regressions.
What does the evidence say about AI-generated test quality?
Published results are reasons to review generated tests, not universal failure-rate estimates for today’s tools. In a peer-reviewed 2024 study, Khalid El Haji, Carolin Brandt, and Andy Zaidman evaluated 290 Copilot-generated tests across 53 sampled tests from open-source Python projects. In that study setup, approximately 45.28% of generated tests passed when an existing test suite was available; without one, 92.45% were failing, broken, or empty. Those figures describe that tool, sample, language, and study—not every assistant, project, or current workflow. See the AST 2024 paper.

Test quality also affects how coding systems are evaluated. OpenAI’s 2026 audit found material test-design and/or problem-description issues in 59.4% of 138 difficult SWE-bench Verified tasks, including tests that were too narrow or checked behavior not specified in the problem. That is a benchmark audit, not a measurement of ordinary AI-generated test accuracy. Its practical lesson is to scrutinize what a test actually verifies, whether written for a project or an evaluation. See OpenAI’s explanation of the audit.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The generated test will not run | Syntax, imports, framework configuration, fixtures, dependencies, and setup. | Resolve the execution error first, then rerun the test. |
| The test fails immediately | Whether its assumptions, inputs, and expected result match the requirement. | Determine whether the implementation, test, or requirement is wrong before changing assertions. |
| The test passes but seems unhelpful | Whether it asserts a meaningful outcome and would catch a plausible regression. | Replace incidental or tautological checks with assertions tied to observable behavior. |
| Only happy paths are covered | Whether the prompt named boundaries, invalid inputs, and failure behavior. | Request the missing scenarios explicitly and review the additions. |
| Tests do not match project style | Whether the assistant saw nearby tests and was told the framework and conventions. | Supply a representative test file and state the project’s setup and mocking approach. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI-generated tests replace a developer or QA review?
No. Treat them as candidate tests: people still need to verify their assumptions, assertions, execution, and coverage of intended behavior.
Does high test coverage prove that my code is correct?
No. Coverage reports which code ran, not whether assertions would detect the regressions that matter.
