Use Selenium’s Select class only when the control is a native HTML <select>. For a JavaScript dropdown built from elements such as <div> or <li>, interact with its trigger and options as ordinary WebElements. Identify which kind of control the page uses before choosing an approach; the two require different code.
First identify the dropdown type
Inspect the element in the browser’s developer tools, or inspect the element returned by your locator. A native dropdown has a <select> element containing <option> elements. A custom dropdown may look identical to a user but is implemented with other elements and JavaScript.
- Native select: wrap the actual
<select>in Selenium’sSelecthelper. - Custom dropdown: locate and click the widget’s trigger, wait for its options, then click the intended option using ordinary WebDriver interactions.
Selenium’s Select helper works only with HTML select and option elements; it does not operate JavaScript overlays made from elements such as div or li.
Select an option in a native HTML dropdown
Locate the <select>, create a Select, and choose an option by its displayed label, its HTML value, or its index. This example selects the option whose visible label is Four:

import org.openqa.selenium.By;
import org.openqa.selenium.WebElement;
import org.openqa.selenium.support.ui.Select;
WebElement selectElement = driver.findElement(By.name("selectomatic"));
Select select = new Select(selectElement);
select.selectByVisibleText("Four");
The locator in the example assumes the page has a native select with name="selectomatic". Replace it with a locator matching the actual page, and use the exact option label shown there.
Choose the right selection method
| Method | What it matches | When it is useful | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
selectByVisibleText("Four") |
The option’s displayed text | When the user-facing label is clear and stable | The supplied text must match the option label. |
selectByValue("two") |
The option’s value attribute |
When the page exposes a stable value meaningful to the test | The value may not be obvious from the rendered page; inspect the option markup. |
selectByIndex(3) |
The option’s index | When position itself is what the test needs to exercise | It depends on option order, so inserting or reordering options can change which choice is selected. |
Prefer the exact label or a meaningful option value when either is available. Use an index deliberately rather than treating it as a substitute for a stable identifier.
Verify the selected option
Do not assume that a selection call produced the intended page state. For a single select, inspect the selected option:

WebElement selected = select.getFirstSelectedOption();
String selectedLabel = selected.getText();
if (!"Four".equals(selectedLabel)) {
throw new AssertionError("Expected Four, but selected " + selectedLabel);
}
Select also provides getOptions() to retrieve the options and getAllSelectedOptions() to retrieve every currently selected option. These are useful when a test needs to check the control’s actual state.

A native select marked with the multiple attribute can have more than one selected option. Check the control rather than inferring its behavior from its appearance:
WebElement selectElement = driver.findElement(By.name("colors"));
Select select = new Select(selectElement);
if (!select.isMultiple()) {
throw new IllegalStateException("Expected a multiple-select control");
}
select.selectByVisibleText("Blue");
select.selectByValue("green");
for (WebElement option : select.getAllSelectedOptions()) {
System.out.println(option.getText());
}
Call a selection method for each option the test needs. To remove choices, use the corresponding deselectByVisibleText, deselectByValue, or deselectByIndex method. Use deselectAll() to clear all selections.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Deselect methods are valid only for a multiple select. Calling them on a single-select control results in UnsupportedOperationException. Verify the selected options after changing them, especially when the test’s expected state includes several choices.
Interact with a custom JavaScript dropdown
Do not pass a custom wrapper to Select. Its constructor checks that the supplied element is a SELECT tag and throws UnexpectedTagNameException for another tag. Instead, use locators for the actual trigger and option elements. The exact locators and sequence depend on the widget’s markup and behavior.

trigger.click();
WebElement option = wait.until(

option.click();
This is not a universal recipe: a widget may expose different roles, use a text input, render options elsewhere in the DOM, or require keyboard input. Inspect the widget after opening it and target the element that represents the intended option. If options load asynchronously, wait for the specific option or visible list rather than relying on a fixed sleep. If the widget supports keyboard navigation, sending keys to its focused control may be more appropriate than clicking.
Disabled selects and options
The Selenium Select-list guide documents an important version-specific constraint: as of Selenium 4.5, constructing a Select for a disabled <select> is not allowed. An individual option with a disabled attribute may also be unselectable and can result in UnsupportedOperationException.
When a selection fails, inspect both the select and the target option for disabled state, and check the Selenium version used by the project. A disabled control is a page-state constraint, not a reason to bypass the UI with a different locator.

Common errors and how to fix them
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
UnexpectedTagNameException when creating Select |
The locator found a wrapper or custom dropdown instead of a native select. | Inspect the located element’s tag. Use Select only on the actual <select>; for a custom widget, interact with its trigger and option elements. |
| Option is not found by visible text or value | The supplied label or value does not match the option, or the locator points to the wrong control. | Inspect the option text and its value attribute. Confirm the locator targets the intended select. |
Selection or deselection throws UnsupportedOperationException |
The option may be disabled, or a deselection method was called on a single select. | Check the option’s disabled state and whether the select has multiple. |
| A custom option cannot be clicked | The menu may not be open, the option may not yet be rendered or clickable, or the locator may not match this widget’s markup. | Open the trigger, inspect the resulting DOM, use a locator for the actual option, and wait for that option to become available and clickable. |
| The test selects the wrong option after a page update | The test depends on an index and the option order changed. | Use an exact visible label or stable option value if the test is about a particular choice rather than its position. |
Keep dropdown tests reliable
- Use a locator that identifies the actual control, not a nearby label or decorative wrapper.
- For custom widgets, wait for the menu or option state the test needs; do not assume opening is synchronous.
- Choose by label or value when possible, and reserve index selection for tests where position matters.
- Assert the selected state after interaction, using
getFirstSelectedOption()orgetAllSelectedOptions()for native selects. - When a failure occurs, inspect the DOM and disabled state before changing the interaction method.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not a Selenium replacement: use Selenium when your test needs to operate a dropdown, and use ScreenshotNeo when you need a captured page image or PDF. Its screenshot endpoint can capture a URL in one request. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie and consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium’s Select class handle a dropdown made from div elements?
No. The Select helper is for native HTML select and option elements. A div-based widget requires ordinary WebDriver interactions with its own trigger and options.
Should I use visible text, value, or index for a native select?
Use the exact visible label or a meaningful option value when available. An index identifies position and is sensitive to option reordering.
