There is no universal list of Android phones or a current official Android OS-version ranking that can tell every team what to test. Start with your app’s Reach and devices data in Google Play Console, then use Android vitals to identify device cohorts with elevated quality issues. Use those findings to choose OS versions, hardware characteristics, and physical devices that match your audience and app risks.

What Android device statistics can—and cannot—tell you

Google’s public Android Developers Distribution dashboard presents snapshots of Google Play devices sharing characteristics such as screen size and density. Each snapshot covers seven days; the cited snapshot ended November 24, 2025. Those figures describe the dashboard’s Google Play population and measurement period, not every Android device in use or your app’s own audience.

The dashboard content cited here does not establish a current official global Android OS-version share. Avoid treating an old chart, an undated graphic, or a third-party traffic estimate as a current version ranking. For app-specific decisions, Google recommends Reach and devices in Play Console, which provides more granular information for deciding what to build for, where to launch, and what to test.

Keep graphics capability statistics separate from OS-version shares. For example, Android Developers reported Vulkan support among active handheld devices running API level 23 and higher over the 28-day period ending November 24, 2025: Vulkan 1.1 at 62.09%, Vulkan 1.3 at 26.01%, and Vulkan 1.4 at 0.67%. These are capability figures for that defined population and window, not Android version shares and not a prediction of your app’s installed base.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Find the device characteristics that matter to your app

Use Reach and devices for app-specific reach

In Play Console, open Reach and devices for your app. It can break down installs, revenue, and issue rates by Android version, RAM, system-on-chip (SoC), Vulkan, OpenGL ES, screen metrics, and ABI. You can inspect historical trends and export data as CSV. Use the app’s own distribution first; where useful, compare it with a selected peerset rather than assuming a global distribution applies to your customers.

Use Android vitals to locate quality problems

Android vitals helps identify cohorts associated with crash, ANR, memory, battery, startup, and rendering problems. Google says its quality assessment uses the latest 28 days of data and can surface relationships between issue rates and RAM, Android version, or processor type. Emerging crash and ANR issues affecting devices for more than seven days are also flagged.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Vitals is useful evidence, not a census. Its data comes from users who opt in to share usage and diagnostics on a subset of Android devices and OS versions. It excludes issues on uncertified device models and app versions not installed through Google Play. Play Console displays up to the prior 90 days; the Play Developer Reporting API retains three years.

Turn the data into a practical Android test matrix

  1. Rank audience cohorts. In Reach and devices, identify the Android versions and device characteristics associated with meaningful installs or revenue for your app.
  2. Overlay quality signals. In Android vitals, find cohorts with higher crash, ANR, memory, battery, startup, or rendering issue rates. Investigate the specific combinations of version, RAM, and processor implicated by the data.
  3. Map characteristics to app features. Include hardware or capabilities your app actually uses: for example, camera, sensors, location, Bluetooth, graphics APIs, screen size and density, or ABI.
  4. Select representative configurations. Cover high-reach combinations and add targeted cases for cohorts with elevated risk. Choose exact models and the number of devices based on your own reach, failure patterns, and risk profile; there is no universally correct model list or device count.
  5. Revisit the matrix. Review changes in reach and issue rates over time, especially after significant releases or when a new cohort appears in quality data.

A useful matrix records the reason for every configuration, not just its model name:

When to use emulators, real phones, and remote device labs

Emulators for fast, repeatable checks

Android Studio emulators are useful for quick iteration and repeatable virtual configurations. They should not be the only evidence for behavior that depends on physical hardware, vendor-specific implementations, or device-specific conditions.

Physical devices for hardware-dependent behavior

Test on physical devices when the app depends on hardware features or when telemetry points to a device-specific problem. Google’s Firebase Test Lab guidance notes that device testing can reveal issues that may not occur in Android Studio emulators. Test Lab results can include summaries, videos, screenshots, pass/fail or flaky outcomes, and raw logs or failure details.

Remote access when buying every device is impractical

Device labs and remote streaming can broaden access to physical hardware without requiring your team to purchase every handset. Firebase Test Lab provides an available-device catalog and aggregate capacity labels. Google defines capacity from the number of online devices in its lab; a low-capacity label can mean longer waits, particularly for large test runs, but is not a real-time queue estimate. Check the live catalog when planning a run, and do not assume current device availability will remain fixed.

Android Device Streaming connects Android Studio users remotely to physical Android devices in Google data centers. Google’s August 2025 announcement said Android Partner Device Labs were stable in Android Studio Narwhal Feature Drop and named partners including Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, OnePlus, and vivo. It also described a monthly quota, possible charges beyond that quota, and a catalog that was being updated. Confirm the current catalog and billing terms before making this a long-term part of your workflow.

Plan around the Firebase Test Lab transition

Google’s Firebase migration FAQ says Firebase Test Lab executions are supported until September 30, 2027, and names Google Cloud’s Developer Device Platform as the replacement. The FAQ states that the new platform matches Firebase Test Lab rates through April 30, 2027; after that, a new pay-per-use and per-device-slot subscription offer applies. It also says billing must be enabled for Developer Device Platform. These dates and commercial terms can change, so check the current migration FAQ before procurement or designing a workflow that must last beyond the transition.

Capture screenshots of web pages for test evidence

For web-based flows or documentation that need screenshot evidence, a screenshot service can capture a URL separately from the Android-device test itself. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server; its screenshot is not a substitute for exercising an app on a real Android device.

Or skip the browser setup

Make a single GET request for a screenshot; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Cookie banners are accepted and removed before capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots, page information, and PDF capture. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Common mistakes when choosing Android devices to test

  • Using a global ranking as your test plan: Google’s public dashboard is a dated Google Play snapshot, while your app’s Play Console data is the relevant starting point for audience reach.
  • Confusing graphics support with OS distribution: Vulkan percentages describe graphics capability in a defined snapshot, not the share of users on each Android version.
  • Treating Android vitals as complete coverage: Opt-in reporting and the documented exclusions mean some users and installations are not represented.
  • Testing only on emulators: This can miss behavior tied to physical hardware or device-specific implementations.
  • Assuming remote device availability or prices are permanent: Catalog capacity and service terms change; confirm them when scheduling or committing to a platform.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
