To make images load faster, reduce the bytes each page downloads: serve images near their rendered size, offer responsive variants, choose an efficient format and compression level that still looks good, and defer below-the-fold images. Keep the main hero image eager, prioritize it when appropriate, and declare image dimensions so the browser can reserve space. There is no universally best format or compression setting; check both loading behavior and visual quality.

1. Find the images that cost the most

Start with the page’s image requests. Look for files whose pixel dimensions or file size are much larger than their displayed use requires, along with images that do not need to appear during the initial view. Images are often among the heaviest and most prevalent page resources, and reducing their bytes or serving dimensions suited to the device can shorten image downloads and may improve Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), particularly when a large image is the main visible content. web.dev’s image performance guidance explains these effects.

  • Compare each image’s intrinsic dimensions with its rendered dimensions.
  • Check whether a mobile view downloads a desktop-sized image.
  • Identify large images visible immediately; these may affect LCP and should not be delayed.
  • Separate photographs from logos, text-heavy graphics, and images with sharp edges, because they respond differently to lossy compression.

2. Serve dimensions suited to the display

Do not make every screen download one oversized original. Provide multiple image candidates and let the browser choose a suitable one for the viewport and pixel density. The web.dev responsive images guide covers responsive image markup. Use srcset and sizes when candidates are different resolutions of the same image; use <picture> when the browser needs alternative formats or different image sources for display conditions.

Resolution candidates with srcset and sizes

This example offers the same image at three widths. Adjust the candidate files and the sizes expression to match your layout; the browser uses them to select a resource.

The sizes value describes the image’s expected rendered width at different viewport widths; it is not a list of image files. If your layout differs, change it rather than copying the example unchanged. Supply accurate intrinsic dimensions for the selected image’s aspect ratio.

Alternative formats with <picture>

Use <picture> when you want to offer a modern format and retain a fallback. Keep an <img> element inside it: browsers that do not use a preceding source can fall back to that image.

Choose this approach only if your image pipeline produces and serves the referenced files. Format support and features vary; MDN’s image file type and format guide describes the trade-offs and fallback options.

3. Choose a format and compression by image type

WebP and AVIF can reduce file size relative to older formats in suitable cases, but neither is automatically the right choice for every image. Compare browser support, transparency, animation, visual quality, and how your site delivers files. web.dev describes WebP as widely supported in modern browsers, with lossy and lossless compression and transparency; it describes AVIF as newer, with reasonably decent browser support and lossy and lossless options. The same guidance reports tests with greater than 50% savings compared with JPEG in some cases. That is a qualified test result, not a promised saving for a particular image or site. See web.dev’s image performance guidance and MDN’s format guide.

Decision What to compare Practical choice
Format Compression, quality, browser support, transparency, animation Test WebP or AVIF where your delivery setup supports them; retain a suitable fallback where needed.
Compression File size versus visible artifacts Lossy compression often suits detailed photographs if the result remains acceptable. Lossless compression preserves image data but may leave a larger file.
Image dimensions Rendered size, viewport, pixel density, downloaded bytes Offer responsive candidates instead of one oversized source for all screens.
Loading behavior Whether the image is important to the initial viewport Defer appropriate below-the-fold images; keep the hero image eager and consider prioritizing an important image.

Inspect the result, not just the file size

There is no universal compression setting. Compare output at realistic display sizes. Look closely at text, logos, sharp edges, and high-contrast colored text on flat backgrounds: lossy compression and chroma subsampling can make artifacts conspicuous there. For photographs, inspect details such as faces, hair, gradients, and texture. Keep lossless or less aggressive output when visible damage is unacceptable.

Squoosh and ImageOptim are tools named in web.dev’s guidance for image compression. Image optimization services can automate parts of a workflow, but whether a service is worth its cost depends on your volume and process. web.dev

4. Defer non-critical images, not the hero

For images below the fold that need not load immediately, add loading="lazy". Avoid applying it to the main hero image: delaying an image that is immediately visible can postpone its request. For an image that is genuinely important, fetchpriority="high" can signal its importance to the browser. These recommendations are in web.dev’s responsive images guidance.

<!-- Important, initially visible image: do not lazy-load it. -->
<img src="/images/hero.webp"
     width="1600"
     height="900"
     fetchpriority="high"
     alt="A mountain landscape at sunrise">

<!-- Appropriate for an image below the fold. -->
<img src="/images/related-story.webp"
     width="800"
     height="533"
     loading="eager"
     alt="A related story illustration">

Lazy loading is intended to avoid bandwidth and storage use until an image is reasonably likely to be needed. It is a deferral mechanism, not a substitute for appropriately sized files. MDN discusses loading and reserved dimensions in its <img> reference.

5. Reserve layout space as images load

Set an image’s intrinsic width and height, or otherwise reserve its correct aspect ratio. That lets the browser allocate space before the image arrives and helps reduce layout shifts. Use dimensions that match the image’s aspect ratio even when CSS makes the rendered image responsive, for example:

<img src="/images/product.webp"
     width="1200"
     height="800"
     alt="The product on a table"
     style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">

MDN explains this layout-space behavior in its <img> reference.

6. Recheck bytes, loading, and appearance

After each change, compare the page’s image downloads and the visible output. Check both a narrow and a wide viewport: responsive markup should allow the browser to select candidates appropriate to the display. Confirm that the hero image is not delayed, below-the-fold images are deferred only where suitable, and image space remains stable as files load. Judge compression by the file-size and quality trade-off, not by minimizing bytes at any cost. These steps can reduce image download time, but no particular score or percentage improvement can be assumed without measuring the page.

Troubleshooting common image-loading problems

  • Mobile still downloads the largest file: Check that the srcset width descriptors refer to real candidates and that sizes describes the rendered layout. An incorrect or missing size description can lead to an unsuitable candidate.
  • A modern-format image does not appear: Verify the file URL and encoding, and ensure the <picture> element includes a valid <img> fallback. Check that your delivery setup serves each format you reference.
  • The hero appears late: Remove loading="lazy" from the initially visible hero. If it is important, consider fetchpriority="high"; verify the selected source is not unnecessarily large.
  • Content jumps when images load: Add accurate width and height attributes or reserve the correct aspect ratio in the layout.
  • Compressed images look damaged: Use a less aggressive setting or lossless output where needed. Inspect text and sharp-edged graphics separately from photographs.
  • New files do not seem to take effect: Confirm the page references the intended URLs and that any image delivery or cache layer is serving the updated assets. Then inspect the loaded image requests again.

Or skip the browser setup

For capturing a rendered page as an image, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its screenshot endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. One GET request can capture a URL; for example, this cURL command saves a WebP screenshot:
