How do I optimize images on Netlify?
For an image stored in your site, add a URL such as /.netlify/images?url=/images/photo.jpg&w=800. The w parameter requests an 800-pixel-wide output; add h when you need a specific height. Netlify creates the transformation on demand and caches the transformed result at the edge.
Choose output dimensions to fit the image’s display context rather than delivering a much larger original. For a card that must fill a fixed 600-by-400-pixel box, for example, use:

How do I resize or crop an image with Netlify Image CDN?
Use integer pixel values for w and h. The fit parameter controls how the source fits those dimensions:

With fit=cover, set position to choose which region is retained in the crop. Review the result at the actual display size: a centered crop can cut off a face, product detail, or other important subject.
Does Netlify automatically convert images to WebP or AVIF?
When you do not set fm, Netlify checks the browser’s supported formats in this order: WebP, then AVIF, then the original format. The browser’s Accept header informs the selection. A request containing only url can still negotiate a supported output format.

To request a specific format, use fm. Netlify documents avif, jpg, png, webp, gif, and blurhash. For example:

/.netlify/images?url=/images/photo.jpg&w=800&fm=avif&q=75The q parameter accepts whole numbers from 1 through 100. Netlify documents a default of 75 for supported lossy conversions. Quality is a visual tradeoff, not a universal optimization target: inspect the output for the image type and intended use before choosing a value.

Allow remote sources in netlify.toml using the images.remote_images setting, then pass the full remote URL as the url parameter:

Follow Netlify’s current TOML and regular-expression escaping guidance; single-quoted literal strings or appropriately escaped backslashes can avoid ambiguity. The remote image must be publicly accessible, unless its URL authorizes access itself, such as a presigned URL. Netlify does not forward credential-bearing Authorization or Cookie headers to the remote source.
Should I use a framework image component instead?
If your site uses a framework with a documented Netlify integration, its standard image component may connect to Image CDN without you constructing transformation URLs manually. The integration and remote-image configuration differ by framework; check the current Netlify framework requirements before relying on it.

How should I check caching and test transformations?
Netlify uniquely caches transformed outputs at the edge, so repeated requests for the same transformation can use the cached image. Image CDN respects atomic deploys by default: when a relative source image changes in a new deploy, new requests trigger transformations against the new source.
Use Netlify Dev to test transformations locally in an environment intended to mimic production. Check the transformed image for correct dimensions, crop, format, and visual quality before shipping it.

- Netlify says Image CDN does not support Split Testing; results may be inconsistent between branches.
- Image CDN is not currently part of Netlify’s HIPAA-compliant hosting offering.
- Netlify discourages cross-site redirects for image transformations because they may hurt performance.
The current Image CDN route is /.netlify/images. Do not confuse it with older Large Media transformation syntax such as nf_resize=fit or nf_resize=smartcrop; those parameters belong to the legacy workflow documented separately at Netlify’s Large Media image transformation guide.
