Good website image management starts with keeping original assets, choosing a format and compression level that suit each image, and publishing only the responsive variants your layouts need. Pair that workflow with purpose-based alt text and image markup that search crawlers can discover, then check the result on real pages.

Set up a reliable image workflow

Image management is more than compressing files. A workable process connects asset intake, editorial decisions, delivery, accessibility, and maintenance. Adapt it to your CMS, hosting stack, team size, and the image slots your site actually uses.

Keep originals and make ownership clear

  • Preserve an original source file separately from optimized delivery versions. That gives you a clean starting point if an image needs to be cropped, reformatted, or replaced later.
  • Use predictable filenames that help editors identify an asset, rather than relying on camera-generated names. Keep names descriptive and practical; do not treat filenames as a substitute for alt text.
  • Record rights, attribution, and any usage restrictions where they apply. Establish who can approve an asset and who is responsible for replacing or updating it.
  • Document where an image is used when your CMS does not make that easy to see. Before replacing or deleting a shared asset, check whether multiple pages depend on it.

Generate only useful delivery variants

Keep the source asset, but create delivery sizes around the image slots in your design—for example, a small card, a content-column image, and a wide hero image if those slots exist. Exporting every image at one oversized resolution wastes bytes; generating a large matrix of sizes no page uses adds storage, cache, and maintenance complexity. There is no universal correct number of variants: it depends on your actual layouts and traffic.

Choose a format for the image, not by habit

Format choice is a balance among visual fidelity, file size, transparency, client compatibility, and how the asset will be used. Test representative files in your publishing stack rather than assuming one format is best for everything.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Asset or need Formats to consider What to check
Photographs WebP or AVIF; JPEG where broad historical compatibility or a fallback is needed Inspect compression for visible damage, especially around fine texture and edges.
Screenshots, diagrams, logos, and line art WebP or AVIF with lossless encoding where supported; PNG when lossless detail or transparency is needed Look closely at text, sharp lines, and flat-color regions, where lossy artifacts can be conspicuous.
Scalable diagrams and interface graphics SVG Confirm that the CMS and delivery path accept it and that it scales cleanly at the intended sizes.
Animation Select an animation format supported by your publishing stack and audience Check that the animation behaves as intended and that its delivery cost is appropriate.

WebP and AVIF offer lossy and lossless encoding options. A lossy setting that looks acceptable on a photograph can visibly degrade text, crisp edges, or flat artwork. JPEG is a lossy photographic format with broad historical support; PNG supports lossless imagery and transparency; SVG is useful for graphics that should scale cleanly. Verify format support in your own CMS and supported-client set, and provide a fallback where that set requires one.

Compress by comparing visual quality and bytes

Compression is a measured judgment, not a universal percentage. Export a representative sample at several settings, compare the appearance at the size visitors will see, and record the resulting file sizes. Choose the smallest output that still looks right for that asset and context.

  • Inspect photographs for distracting loss of texture, gradients, or detail.
  • Inspect screenshots and diagrams at normal display size and at a closer zoom for halos, blurred text, or broken edges.
  • Check transparency and color in the actual page background, not only in an editor that may show a checkerboard.
  • Repeat the check after changing the encoder, CMS, or optimization settings; an apparently smaller file is not a good trade if quality visibly suffers.

Squoosh, ImageOptim, and image-optimization services are examples of approaches you can evaluate. They are not a verified ranking or comparison: choose based on output quality, workflow integration, automation needs, compatibility, and cost. No single optimizer or setting is established as best for every site.

Serve responsive images with srcset and sizes

Responsive delivery lets the browser choose among image candidates appropriate to the rendered slot and device. The srcset attribute lists candidates with width descriptors; sizes describes the expected CSS display width so the browser can make a suitable choice. Keep a fallback src.

The sample assumes that the page’s layout uses the slot widths described by sizes; adjust the media conditions and values to match your CSS. If they do not describe the real layout, the browser may select a candidate that is unnecessarily large or too small. The width and height attributes communicate the image’s intrinsic dimensions and help the page reserve the right shape in the layout.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  • Informative image: provide a concise text equivalent for its essential information. For a chart, include the important takeaway in the surrounding text or a more complete equivalent if the details matter.
  • Decorative image: use alt="" when the image adds no information and is not interactive. This lets assistive technology skip it rather than announce an irrelevant description.
  • Functional image: describe the action or destination when the image is the content of a link or button. The alternative should explain what activating it does, not merely identify its appearance.
  • Complex image: charts, diagrams, and other information-dense images may need a detailed text equivalent beyond a short alt attribute.

Alt text is a text replacement, not a filename or a label that announces “image of.” Read it with the preceding text: together, do they communicate the intended meaning without needless repetition?

Make images discoverable to search crawlers

Use ordinary HTML <img> elements with a real src fallback. Search crawlers can find images referenced there, including an <img> nested inside <picture>; CSS background images are not a dependable substitute for content images you want indexed. Google supports common image formats including JPEG, PNG, WebP, SVG, and AVIF in an image src.

An image sitemap can help expose images that might not otherwise be discovered, particularly when the site’s structure makes them difficult to reach through ordinary page markup. Treat it as an aid to discovery, not a guarantee of indexing or a particular search preview. Google’s choice of image preview remains automated.

Publish and maintain images with a checklist

  1. Before upload: confirm that the asset is approved for use, retain the original, and apply your naming and rights-recording conventions.
  2. Before publishing: choose an appropriate format, compare compression outputs visually, and generate only variants used by real image slots.
  3. In the page: use responsive candidates with accurate sizes when appropriate, a fallback src, and dimensions that match the asset’s proportions.
  4. For accessibility: classify the image as informative, decorative, functional, or complex; then review the alternative in its surrounding content.
  5. For discovery: verify that content images appear in HTML image markup and consider an image sitemap if some images are otherwise hard to find.
  6. After publishing: inspect image quality and layout on actual pages and measure performance on representative pages, not only on isolated files.

If you need a screenshot of a rendered page for editorial review or documentation, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. It is a capture tool, not a replacement for choosing, compressing, or organizing image assets. One GET request can return an image or PDF; for example, this cURL call saves a WebP capture of a page. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information, and capture PDFs.

The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.
