That can help with language-heavy tasks such as summarizing documents, resolving support queries, and preparing audit materials. It does not mean most enterprises have reliable, fully autonomous processes—or that reported worker-level gains automatically translate into company-wide financial impact.
How is generative AI changing enterprise automation?
Traditional business process automation works best when inputs are structured and the steps are predictable. Generative AI adds the ability to interpret and produce natural language, making it possible to automate or assist with parts of work that involve unstructured documents, questions, and requests. An AI agent can go further by using tools or calling enterprise systems, but its ability to act also raises the stakes for permissions, validation, and oversight.
| Approach | What it is suited to | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Rule-based automation | Structured inputs and repeatable steps with clear business rules | Exceptions and ambiguous inputs may need to be routed to a person. |
| Generative AI assistance | Drafting, summarizing, classifying, extracting, or answering questions about less structured material | Outputs need evaluation; a fluent answer is not proof of correctness. |
| Tool-using agents | Workflows where a model uses authorized tools or systems to move a task forward | Actions need bounded permissions, observability, and approval where impact warrants it. |
In practice, these approaches can be combined. A model may extract information from a request, deterministic logic may enforce policy, and an agent may prepare an action for a human to approve. The goal is often to automate a bounded part of a process, not to make an entire role autonomous.
What tasks can AI agents automate at work?
Common enterprise use cases include support and query handling, IT issue resolution, software development, document analysis, audit preparation, and employee services. OpenAI’s 2025 report describes coding and developer tools, data analysis, extraction, and summarization among enterprise API use cases. These are examples of work being assisted or automated at the task level, not evidence that whole occupations have been automated.

Customer and employee support
Support systems can use generative AI to interpret a request, retrieve relevant information, and prepare a response or next step. OpenAI identifies customer support as a common API deployment area. Microsoft’s workplace and IT-services guidance describes agents connecting chat requests to systems of record, with deterministic workflows for repeatable actions and approvals or handoffs for sensitive cases.
Documents, audits, and knowledge work
Document analysis can involve extracting details, summarizing material, and preparing it for review. In a Google Cloud customer case, AES reported using agents to process audit documentation: work that had previously taken much longer could be completed in about an hour, and the case reported a 10–20% increase in audit accuracy. AES retained human review. These are customer outcomes published by Google Cloud, not independently established results for other organizations.
IT, software, and data work
Generative AI can assist with issue resolution, code delivery, data analysis, and information extraction. OpenAI’s report includes these areas in its account of enterprise use and worker-reported outcomes. Whether a task is a good automation candidate depends on how consistently the system can handle the real cases, including exceptions, and whether a person can review consequential results.

Are companies actually seeing productivity gains from generative AI?
Surveys and customer cases report benefits, but they measure different things and should not be treated as a single enterprise-wide productivity figure.
Recommended Free Tools
| Evidence | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI, The state of enterprise AI (2025) | Workers surveyed at nearly 100 enterprises attributed 40–60 minutes saved per active day to ChatGPT Enterprise use; 75% reported improved speed or quality. | These are worker survey responses alongside aggregated and de-identified usage data, published by the vendor. They are not an independent experiment or a census of all enterprises. |
| OpenAI departmental examples (2025) | Respondents included 87% of IT workers reporting faster issue resolution, 85% of marketing and product users reporting faster campaign execution, 75% of HR professionals reporting improved employee engagement, and 73% of engineers reporting faster code delivery. | These are respondent-reported outcomes, not independently measured causal effects. |
| McKinsey, The State of AI: Global Survey 2025 | 64% of respondents said AI was enabling innovation; 39% reported enterprise-level EBIT impact. | These are survey responses, not a direct measurement of every company’s financial results. The survey population and measures differ from OpenAI’s. |
| Google Cloud’s Wells Fargo customer case | The case reported roughly 20% lower workflow time for branch-banker query resolution. | This is a vendor-published customer claim about a specific workflow, not a general estimate for banks or other sectors. |
Task-level time savings can be useful, but they do not by themselves establish net financial impact. A fuller evaluation also accounts for quality, error rates, throughput, human review, integration and operating costs, and the work required to maintain the system.
How widely are enterprises using AI agents?
Agentic automation is emerging, but survey responses do not show it is universal. McKinsey’s 2025 global survey reports that 23% of respondents said their organization was scaling an agentic AI system in at least one area, while a further 39% said they were experimenting. These figures describe respondents’ reports, not a census of all organizations or proof that scaled systems operate autonomously from end to end.

“AI is used,” “AI assists a worker,” “a workflow step is automated,” and “an end-to-end process runs autonomously” describe different levels of deployment. Keeping those distinctions clear helps avoid overstating what an adoption statistic means.
How should an enterprise decide which workflow to automate?
Evaluate the workflow before choosing a model or agent. A promising candidate is bounded enough to test, contains a meaningful language-heavy task, and has a clear way to check whether the system did the right thing.
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Workflow fit | Is the task repetitive and sufficiently bounded? Which steps must remain deterministic? |
| Data and integration | Can the system access current, authorized information and safely call the required systems? |
| Reliability | How will outputs and actions be evaluated on representative cases, exceptions, and adversarial inputs? |
| Autonomy and impact | Can the system only draft or recommend, or can it write, approve, or trigger an irreversible action? |
| Governance | Are permissions, approvals, logs, ownership, monitoring, and incident response in place? |
| Economics | Do measured cycle time, quality, throughput, and operating costs justify deployment and maintenance? |
How do enterprises keep AI agents under control?
Once a system can take actions, governance must be part of how the workflow operates—not just a policy document. NIST’s Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Framework: Generative Artificial Intelligence Profile is voluntary, cross-sector guidance for managing generative AI risk across its lifecycle; using it is not a guarantee of compliance or effectiveness.

Microsoft’s agent-risk guidance identifies risks including task deviation, inadequate human oversight, poor intelligibility, malicious instruction handling, sensitive-data leakage, and excessive permissions. It recommends limiting tools and data to what an agent needs, requiring approval for high-impact or irreversible actions, making planned and completed actions visible, and providing a safe way to pause or stop activity.
A practical deployment sequence
- Choose one bounded workflow. Define its start and end points, expected exceptions, and what the AI is and is not allowed to do.
- Record a baseline. Measure time, quality, cost, and error rates before introducing automation so the comparison has a reference point.
- Test representative cases. Include normal requests, edge cases, and adversarial inputs; evaluate both the model output and any resulting tool action.
- Keep business rules deterministic. Use explicit checks for rules that must be applied consistently rather than relying on generated text alone.
- Scope permissions and approvals. Give the agent only the tools and data required. Route consequential actions to human approval.
- Log and monitor. Keep records of prompts, context, tool calls, approvals, and outcomes; review exceptions and revise the workflow as needed.
This sequence is a practical synthesis of NIST and Microsoft guidance, not a single mandatory procedure prescribed by either source.

What this shift means for enterprise automation
Generative AI expands automation into some language-heavy work, and agents can connect those capabilities to business tools. The strongest case for deployment is a workflow with measurable outcomes, bounded permissions, and a reliable way to handle exceptions—not autonomy for its own sake. Reported gains are encouraging signals, but each organization still needs to test the work it intends to automate and account for oversight, quality, and cost.
