Use Xcode Simulator to check supported device and iOS configurations quickly, then install the app on real devices to verify hardware-dependent behavior, performance, and release builds. Choose test targets from the devices and operating-system versions your app supports; Apple does not prescribe a universal number of devices to test.
Plan coverage around your app’s supported devices
Start with the range of devices and operating-system versions your app claims to support. Build a short matrix of representative combinations rather than picking test targets arbitrarily. The right combinations depend on the app’s interface, features, and minimum supported OS—not on a fixed device count.
| Coverage axis | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Device family and form factor | Test iPhone and, if supported, iPad layouts and behavior. Include screen sizes that meaningfully affect your interface. |
| Operating-system version | Cover the OS versions your app supports, including major versions that may change behavior or expose compatibility issues. |
| Hardware-dependent features | Identify features such as camera or sensor use that need physical hardware verification. |
| Performance and resources | Consider whether memory, power, or network conditions could affect the app. |
| Build and data state | Check release-build behavior and, where relevant, upgrades with existing app data, keychain contents, or defaults. |
A bug may depend on a device model, an OS version, or the particular combination. If exhaustive testing is impractical, prioritize configurations tied to supported features and user-facing risks. Raising the deployment target can reduce the range of OS versions to support, but it also excludes users on older systems; Apple discusses supported combinations in its guidance on testing a beta OS.
Run the app in Xcode Simulator
Select an available simulator
- Open the project or workspace in Xcode and select the app’s scheme.
- In the run-destination menu beside the Run button, choose an available iOS simulator with the model and OS version you want to check.
- Click Run. Inspect the app’s layout and behavior, then repeat with other relevant simulator destinations.
Xcode’s Device Hub manages simulated and paired physical devices. If the simulator model or OS version you need is not available, the installed Xcode platform support determines which destinations you can use. See Apple’s documentation for running an app on simulated or physical devices and Device Hub.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Know what Simulator can and cannot establish
Simulator is useful for quick iteration and for checking configurations you may not physically own. It is not proof that an app will perform the same way on real hardware. Device-specific frameworks may indicate that a capability is unavailable in the simulator; test the feature on a physical device rather than treating a successful simulator run as verification. Apple’s guidance says: “To verify that your app runs exactly as intended, run it on one or more physical devices.”
Pair and test on physical devices
- Connect or pair a supported iPhone or iPad with your Mac using Xcode’s Device Hub. Apple’s device-pairing instructions explain the process.
- In Xcode’s run-destination menu, choose the connected device.
- Build and run the app, then exercise the features that depend on the device’s hardware or real-world behavior.
- Record the device model, OS version, build configuration, and steps that reproduce any issue so the result can be compared with simulator runs and other devices.
If signing is configured for automatic signing, Xcode can register a connected device and create a development provisioning profile. Physical tests are especially important for hardware-dependent features and performance investigation; Apple covers the workflow in its device-running documentation.

Verify release builds under realistic conditions
Test a release build on an actual device before shipping. Development and release conditions can differ, and an app’s behavior may also be affected by the device’s OS capabilities, limited resources, network conditions, build settings, or data left by an earlier installation.
Include update scenarios when they matter to your app: install the prior version, create representative app data, then install the candidate release and verify migration and continued access to the expected data. A development build running only in Simulator does not cover these release and existing-data conditions. Apple’s release-build testing guidance describes the factors to consider.

Distribute builds to a wider group of testers
When testers’ devices are known and limited in number, Apple documents registering those devices and distributing a build to them. For beta feedback, TestFlight is another option. Choose based on your testers and distribution needs; Apple’s registered-device distribution instructions describe that route.
Troubleshoot common multi-device test problems
The device or simulator does not appear as a run destination
- For a simulator: Check whether the needed model and OS platform support are installed in your Xcode setup. Device Hub lists the available destinations.
- For a physical device: Check that it is paired with the Mac in Device Hub, then reopen the run-destination menu.
The app runs in Simulator but a feature does not work
Determine whether the feature depends on hardware or a device-specific capability. Simulator may expose that a feature is unavailable, but it cannot verify the behavior of physical hardware. Repeat the test on an appropriate real device.

A bug appears only on one device or OS version
Keep the failing model and OS version together in the reproduction notes, then test nearby supported configurations to determine whether the issue follows the hardware, OS, or their combination. Do not assume a pass on one destination applies to all supported destinations.
The release build behaves differently from development
Reproduce the issue using the release configuration on a physical device. Check the relevant build settings, existing app data, device resources, and network conditions; these can differ from a development run.

Capture a web page for visual reference (separate from iOS app testing)
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a way to install or test a native iOS app on devices. It can capture a web page when a page image is useful alongside your QA notes, but it does not replace Simulator or physical-device testing.
Or skip the browser setup
For a web page, one GET request returns a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the capture, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. An MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo free.
