Use both approaches when you can: format and compression reduce the bytes in each image, while responsive delivery helps the browser download an image closer to the size it will display. They solve different parts of the transfer problem, so choosing one does not rule out the other.
What are the two approaches?
Format choice and compression
An image format determines how image data is encoded; compression settings affect how much data that encoding retains. The goal is to reduce the file size without losing visual quality or image features the page needs. Lossy compression can discard image information, while lossless compression preserves it. The right choice depends on the image and acceptable trade-offs. web.dev’s image performance guide explains the compression trade-offs; MDN’s compression guide describes lossy and lossless compression.
Responsive image delivery
Responsive delivery provides image candidates at different dimensions. With srcset and sizes, you describe the available resolutions and the expected display width; the browser can choose a suitable candidate for the device and layout. This can avoid downloading a much larger image than the rendered slot needs. See MDN’s responsive images guide.
Which approach should you choose?
| Decision | Format and compression | Responsive delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Main effect | Changes the bytes used to encode an image. | Changes which image dimensions the browser downloads. |
| Best suited to | Reducing the selected image’s transfer size while preserving acceptable quality and needed features. | Pages where image display size varies by viewport or layout. |
| Trade-offs | Visual fidelity, format features, browser support, and encoder behavior. | Generating and maintaining variants and accurately describing image slot sizes. |
| Web mechanisms | Formats such as WebP or AVIF where suitable, with fallbacks if needed. | srcset and sizes; optionally <picture> and <source>. |
| Can you combine them? | Yes. Encode each responsive size efficiently, then let the browser select a suitable candidate. | |
How should you choose an image format?
Start with what the image contains and what the page requires. Photographs, logos, transparency, animation, and lossless fidelity can call for different formats. Compare the resulting file size alongside visual quality, browser support, and required features rather than selecting a format by name alone. MDN’s image file type and format guide describes format characteristics and fallback considerations.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
WebP supports lossy and lossless compression as well as transparency. MDN reports that lossy WebP images average 25–35% smaller than JPEG images at visually similar compression levels, and that lossless WebP is typically 26% smaller than the same images in PNG. These are averages and typical results in MDN’s guide, which does not state a year for those figures; they are not guaranteed savings for a particular image or site.
Set compression by inspecting the result
For lossy images, compare the output at the size readers will actually see. Try compression levels and stop increasing compression when visual degradation becomes unacceptable. A smaller byte count is not a win if important details, edges, or gradients look poor. web.dev recommends finding a compromise between file size and quality; there is no universal quality setting that works for every image.

How do you serve responsive images?
Use srcset and sizes for size variants
Generate suitable width variants for images whose rendered size changes across layouts. List those files in srcset with width descriptors, and use sizes to describe the expected rendered slot. For example, if an image occupies the full viewport below 700 pixels and roughly half the viewport above that, the markup can describe those layout expectations:
<img src="photo-800.jpg" srcset="photo-400.jpg 400w, photo-800.jpg 800w, photo-1200.jpg 1200w" sizes="(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 50vw" alt="Description of the photograph">
The filenames and breakpoints are examples: use values that reflect the actual variants and layout in your project. The browser uses the candidate list and slot information to select an image; it does not mean every device will choose the same file.

Use <picture> for format alternatives or art direction
Use <picture> with one or more <source> elements when you need format alternatives or a different crop at a breakpoint. Keep an <img> element as the fallback and provide meaningful alternative text there. MDN documents this pattern and responsive slot information in its picture element reference.
<picture>
<source type="image/avif" srcset="photo.avif">
<source type="image/webp" srcset="photo.webp">
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description of the photograph">
</picture>
This is a simplified format-fallback example, not a complete responsive candidate list. Add width-specific candidates and media conditions when the page needs them, and ensure each referenced asset exists. Browser compatibility can change, so check support for the formats and markup your audience requires.

How to combine the approaches without overcomplicating the page
- Inventory image needs. Identify photographs, transparent artwork, logos, animation, and images where fine detail must remain intact.
- Choose appropriate formats and compression. Export representative images, compare visual quality and file size, and preserve required features.
- Generate responsive widths. Create a practical set of candidates for images that appear at meaningfully different sizes; avoid producing variants that the layout never uses.
- Describe the layout. Add accurate
srcsetwidth descriptors andsizesvalues. Use<picture>when format choice or art direction needs conditional sources. - Check the rendered result. Inspect images at the actual display sizes and verify that the intended source files load across the browser configurations you support.
Common mistakes and troubleshooting
- The page still downloads oversized images: Check whether the image has genuinely smaller width variants and whether
srcsetlists them. Reviewsizesagainst the real layout; an inaccurate slot description can lead to an unsuitable candidate choice. - An image looks soft or damaged: Inspect the exported file at its display size and reduce lossy compression if needed. Consider whether the asset needs lossless encoding or a format better suited to its features.
- A format alternative does not load: Confirm the asset path and MIME type declaration, and retain an appropriate
<img>fallback for browsers that do not support the preferred source. - The wrong crop appears at a breakpoint: Review the relevant
<source media="...">condition and ensure its candidate is the crop intended for that layout. - Variants multiply without a clear benefit: Revisit the page’s actual image slots. Keep candidates that serve real display sizes rather than maintaining many nearly identical files.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Image transfer savings depend on the source image, dimensions, format, encoder settings, and the candidate the browser downloads. The WebP averages above are not a prediction for a particular site, and format changes alone do not guarantee a fixed page-speed improvement. Responsive delivery can reduce unnecessary dimensions, but it introduces asset generation and markup maintenance. Measure representative pages and weigh delivered bytes against visible quality and ongoing implementation work.
If a site has many images and variants to generate or serve, a managed image CDN or transformation service may reduce that operational burden. Compare its current capabilities and terms against your requirements; no particular provider is established as the right choice here.

If you need screenshots of optimized pages to inspect them, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a screenshot or PDF; the API supports PNG, JPEG, and WebP output. Its clean-shot options accept cookie/consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, with each step switchable. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP server tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf.
For example, this cURL request captures the page as WebP; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and output options:
