First determine whether the page uses a native <input type="date"> or a custom calendar. For a native field, try Selenium’s normal element interaction, send a date in yyyy-mm-dd form, then verify the value and the application’s response. Use JavaScript assignment only when changing the DOM property is enough: assigning value does not itself fire the user-originated input event. A custom picker has no universal selector or click sequence; interact with the controls that the particular widget exposes.
Identify the date control before choosing a method
Inspect the page’s DOM and find the field or calendar control. A native date input is an <input type="date">; a custom picker may instead be built from buttons, a text field, grid cells, hidden fields, or framework-managed state. Selenium’s general element interactions work with interactable elements, but they do not make different custom widgets behave alike.
- Native field: inspect its
type, currentvalue, and anymin,max, orstepconstraints. - Custom widget: inspect its accessible names and roles, visible controls, and the field or application state that changes after a selection.
For a native date input, the value uses the normalized yyyy-mm-dd format even when the browser displays a localized date. The popup’s appearance and displayed date format can vary by browser and operating system, so assert the value or application outcome rather than a particular popup layout. Prefer Selenium interaction for a native date input
Use a locator specific to your application rather than assuming every page has the same date field. The following JavaScript-binding example assumes driver is an initialized Selenium WebDriver instance and By is imported from selenium-webdriver:

}Use a date permitted by the page’s constraints and the test case. Selenium’s high-level element interactions check visibility and interactability; a field that is hidden, disabled, covered, or otherwise not interactable may fail before entry. Exact keyboard behavior can differ across browser and driver combinations, so run the test in the browser configuration your project supports and verify the resulting value. The Selenium JavaScript WebElement API documents the element methods.
Use executeScript only when setting the DOM value is sufficient
Selenium’s JavaScript API runs a script in the currently selected frame or window and can pass a WebElement as an argument. For a native field, this sets the DOM property and returns it for a direct check:

}This assertion proves only that the field’s DOM value is set. Programmatic assignment does not itself fire the user-originated input event, so application code may not observe or commit the change. It also does not prove that a form submitted, a framework-managed state updated, or dependent content changed. When those behaviors matter, use Selenium interaction or the widget’s own controls, then assert the resulting application state. MDN documents this distinction for the input event; Selenium documents script execution in its JavaScript WebDriver API.
Do not treat manually dispatching a synthetic event as guaranteed to reproduce a real user action. Browser controls and application frameworks can have behavior beyond a changed property or dispatched event.

Handle a custom calendar through its actual controls
There is no reliable universal CSS selector, XPath, or click sequence for custom date pickers. Inspect the widget on the page under test and identify how it exposes the month, year, and day choices. Then locate and operate those controls using Selenium’s normal interactions.
- Identify the picker’s visible controls and accessible names or roles, and determine whether the date is reflected in a text input or another application element.
- Use the component’s supported keyboard path if the page or component documents one; otherwise select the needed controls as exposed by that specific widget.
- After selection, verify the field value or displayed date and a meaningful downstream result, such as the expected validation state or date-dependent content.
Do not copy a selector such as .datepicker or a day-cell XPath from an unrelated page: those are implementation details, not Selenium conventions. The exact approach depends on the widget’s DOM and behavior.

Wait for an observable result and validate it
Prefer a wait for the condition the test actually needs over an arbitrary pause. Depending on the form, that can be the expected field value, a validation message, an enabled submit button, or updated date-dependent content. Check native input constraints such as min and max, and separately verify application-level validation: a value can appear in the DOM without being accepted by the application.
If using Selenium’s asynchronous script API, call the callback Selenium supplies as the final argument to signal completion. For ordinary date entry, waiting for the relevant field or application state is generally clearer than using asynchronous script execution simply to delay the test. Choose between interaction and direct assignment

The practical decision is whether the test needs to prove only a field value or the outcome of a user-like interaction. For the latter, use normal interaction and assert the application’s response.
Troubleshoot common date-entry failures
- The field is found but entry fails: check whether it is visible and interactable, whether it is disabled or covered, and whether the locator identifies the intended element. Use Selenium’s normal interaction rather than assuming a hidden field is equivalent to the visible control.
- The value is empty or differs from the expected value: use the native input’s normalized
yyyy-mm-ddvalue, check constraints such asminandmax, and read the value back after entry. - The DOM value is correct but the form behaves as if it is blank: direct assignment may have bypassed the event or state update the application expects. Exercise the field or picker through WebDriver and assert the form’s resulting state.
- The test passes on one machine but not another: do not assert a native popup’s visual layout or localized display string. Verify the normalized value and application outcome in each supported browser/driver configuration.
- A custom picker selector does not work: inspect that application’s actual widget markup and accessible controls. A selector or calendar sequence from another library is not portable by default.
- The script runs in the wrong page context: Selenium executes JavaScript in the currently selected frame or window. Select the frame containing the field before locating or scripting against it.
