A unit test checks one small unit of behavior in relative isolation; an integration test checks whether components or a component and an external dependency work together. The practical difference is the boundary exercised and which dependencies are real—not just the label a team gives the test.
How unit and integration tests differ
| Axis | Unit test | Integration test |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | One small unit of behavior, such as a function or method | Two or more components working together, or a component crossing an important boundary |
| Dependencies | Often uses controlled inputs, fakes, or mocks instead of infrastructure | Often includes real components such as a database, file system, request pipeline, or service; other dependencies may still be replaced |
| Setup and feedback | Usually simpler and faster | Usually requires more setup and processing, and takes longer |
| Main confidence | Local logic, decisions, and branches | Interfaces, configuration, serialization, infrastructure, and interactions |
| Maintenance risk | Can become coupled to implementation details if assertions track internal structure | Can require test data, services, and environment setup |
These are common tendencies, not rigid rules. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core integration-testing guidance describes unit tests as isolated checks using fabricated collaborators and integration tests as checks involving actual components. The right boundary depends on what behavior you need confidence in.
What counts as a “unit” or an integration test?
A unit is not necessarily a class. It might be a function, method, or another team-defined piece of behavior. The useful unit depends on the system’s design and programming style; object-oriented, procedural, and functional code can lead teams to draw that boundary differently. See Martin Fowler’s discussion of unit tests.
“Integration test” is also used inconsistently. It can mean a narrow check that a component works with one collaborator, or a broader test across several modules or system layers. Fowler notes that the term is blurred, and his definition and discussion distinguishes module integration from broader system checks. To make a test understandable, describe what it exercises and which dependencies are real or replaced instead of relying on its name alone.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Examples: when each test fits
Unit test: validate a calculation or rule
Suppose a price-calculation function applies a discount and returns a total. A unit test can provide fixed inputs and assert the result. Keep database and network behavior outside this test; replace collaborators if the function depends on them. This isolates the rule so failures point toward local logic rather than infrastructure.
Integration test: exercise the application request pipeline
Start the application’s test host, send a request through its pipeline, and assert the response. This can reveal routing, middleware, serialization, configuration, and component-interaction problems that a direct function call would not exercise. Microsoft’s ASP.NET Core documentation shows this arrange, act, assert pattern.

Integration test: read and write through the database boundary
Write a record and read it back using the database configuration the application is meant to integrate with. That checks more than a repository method’s local logic: it can expose schema, mapping, configuration, and persistence mismatches. Fowler recommends testing real boundary behavior such as database reads and writes and data serialization.
Integration test: call an external service safely
Exercise the application’s API client and verify how it handles a service response. Prefer a local service instance or dedicated test instance when available; do not send automated test traffic to production. A unit test with a fake response can still cover local error-handling branches, while the integration check verifies the boundary behavior.

When to choose each layer
- Start with the question. If you need to verify a deterministic rule or a branch in one function, test that unit directly.
- Use the narrowest layer that answers it. If a behavior can be verified adequately at either level, Microsoft recommends choosing the unit test; it generally needs less setup and runs faster.
- Add focused integration coverage for important boundaries. Cover the interactions that isolated tests cannot establish, such as key database reads and writes, request handling, serialization, or service communication.
- Prioritize by risk and impact. Spend broader-test effort on failures with meaningful consequences and on boundaries where mismatches are plausible. Avoid multiplying every data permutation across slower, more complex layers.
The test automation pyramid is a useful way to think about the tradeoff: lower layers are generally more isolated and faster, while higher layers cover broader behavior and tend to be slower. The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level Syllabus v4.0.1 presents the pyramid as a model, not a universal required ratio. There is no fixed unit-to-integration test count that fits every system.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Trusting labels without checking scope: A test named “unit” may exercise several real components; one named “integration” may check a single collaborator. State the boundary and real dependencies in the test description.
- Replacing every dependency: Doubles make isolated logic easier to test, but they cannot prove real components agree on configuration, serialization, or behavior. Add targeted boundary tests.
- Using integration tests for every case: Broad setup can make feedback slower and test maintenance heavier. Keep local rule and branch checks at the narrow layer where practical.
- Sending automated checks to production services: Use a local or dedicated test service where available to avoid unintended effects on real systems.
- Chasing a numeric pyramid ratio: The model communicates relative scope and speed, not a universal target. Choose coverage based on risk, impact, and maintenance cost.
