Generative AI can help QA teams draft tests, expand scenarios, and analyze failures—but it improves quality only when people supply clear requirements and review and execute the resulting tests. Treat it as an assistant for test design, not as proof that software works.

Where generative AI helps in QA

Given source code, specifications, and existing tests, a generative AI tool can propose unit tests or broader test cases. It can also help identify gaps, suggest edge cases, summarize failures, and propose follow-up scenarios. These tasks can speed up the work of turning intended behavior into checks, but generated output still has to be run and judged against the intended behavior.

  • Test drafting: Generate an initial set of tests from a function, acceptance criteria, or contract.
  • Scenario expansion: Ask for boundary values, invalid inputs, state transitions, and error paths that existing tests may miss.
  • Failure analysis: Provide a failing test and relevant error output; ask for possible causes and diagnostic checks rather than accepting a speculative fix.
  • Feedback and maintenance: Use failures, coverage gaps, and code changes to suggest which behaviors need additional or updated tests.

These are assistance tasks, not a substitute for test execution, QA judgment, or a defensible test oracle—the expected result against which actual behavior is checked.

Why specifications and context matter

Code alone shows what the software currently does, not necessarily what it is supposed to do. If a tool sees only implementation details, it may reproduce an existing bug in its tests or invent behavior that was never required. Provide relevant requirements, preconditions, postconditions, existing test conventions, and any explicitly undefined behavior.

A 2026 Google Research evaluation on production bugs compared a spec-driven agent—which first documented preconditions, postconditions, and undefined behavior—with a traditional test-generation agent baseline. The spec-driven approach improved bug detection by 9.8 percentage points (reported p = 0.0352) and branch coverage by 2.5 percentage points (p = 0.0034). Its generated suites were judged superior to baseline suites in 77.8% of cases, and superior to human-authored tests in 56.7% of cases; those suite comparisons used an LLM evaluator. These results describe that study’s system, baseline, and production-bug evaluation, not a guaranteed gain from any prompt or tool. Google Research: Grounding AI Agents in Contracts

How to use AI to generate tests responsibly

  1. State the behavior first. Summarize the requirement in plain language and identify inputs, expected outputs, side effects, and error conditions. Include acceptance criteria or a contract where available.
  2. Give relevant context. Share the target code, related types or dependencies, representative existing tests, and the project’s test framework conventions. Avoid sending secrets or confidential code to a service unless your organization permits it.
  3. Ask for a contract before test code. Have the tool list preconditions, postconditions, boundary cases, and undefined behavior. Correct that list before asking for tests; this makes hidden assumptions visible.
  4. Request a small, explainable test set. Ask for one test per distinct behavior, with the intended requirement stated beside each assertion. Include normal, boundary, invalid, and relevant failure cases rather than maximizing test count.
  5. Review every assertion. Verify it checks the requirement rather than merely matching the current implementation. A plausible but wrong assertion can pass or fail for the wrong reason.
  6. Run tests in the actual project environment. Confirm that tests compile, execute, and pass for the intended reason. Where practical, introduce a known defect or mutation and check that the test fails.
  7. Use results to find blind spots. Review branch coverage and other project-appropriate measures, then inspect uncovered behavior. Coverage and test count are clues, not evidence by themselves that tests are effective.
  8. Re-test variable AI behavior across runs. For software that calls a generative model, test varied inputs and repeated runs, and assess behavioral criteria or outcome distributions rather than relying on one pass/fail result.

Generated tests need execution and review

A 2024 study by Khalid El Haji, Carolin Brandt, and Andy Zaidman evaluated 290 GitHub Copilot-generated tests for 53 sampled tests from open-source Python projects. Within an existing test suite, 45.28% of the generated tests were passing; 54.72% were failing, broken, or empty. When generated without an existing suite, 92.45% were failing, broken, or empty. Those figures apply to the study’s sample and setup, not to every current Copilot version or AI test generator. They nevertheless show why context and execution matter. TU Delft study record

Even a test that runs and passes may be weak: it might assert an irrelevant detail, encode an incorrect assumption, or never detect the defect it was meant to catch. The IEEE Computer practitioner playbook discusses this risk alongside nondeterministic output, bias, test generation, failure analysis, and continuous feedback. Its guidance describes possible practices and risks, not a controlled estimate of time saved or defects prevented. IEEE Computer practitioner playbook

What to measure beyond test count

Evaluate generated tests by whether they detect meaningful defects and remain useful, not just by how many the tool produces. Track whether the tests compile and run, whether assertions map to requirements, whether important branches and boundary cases are exercised, and whether tests catch seeded defects or mutations when that is practical. Also account for readability, maintenance effort, and how often reviewers must correct generated assumptions.

For AI features whose responses can vary, one run may conceal inconsistency. Use representative and diverse inputs, repeat runs, and define acceptable behavior or quality measures appropriate to the feature. A single binary pass/fail outcome may not describe a system whose output is probabilistic or context-sensitive.

Choose an AI testing workflow carefully

There is no universal best vendor or model established by the cited evaluations. When comparing workflows, check how much code and specification context they accept, whether they encourage explicit contract reasoning, and whether their output is readable and executable in your environment. Ask how you will validate correctness, detect defects, handle edge cases and repeated runs, and maintain tests when code or models change.
