Use the CSS border shorthand to set an element’s border width, line style, and color on all four sides: border: 1px solid #333;. The most common reason a border does not appear is that its style was omitted: border-style defaults to none. You can also style sides individually, round corners with border-radius, and use an outline for focus without changing layout.
Set a border on all four sides
The border shorthand sets width, style, and color. Their order can vary:

}This adds a one-pixel solid dark gray border around each element with the card class. If you provide a style but omit width or color, the omitted values default to medium and currentColor, respectively. If you omit the style, it defaults to none, so the border is not drawn. Choose a line style and control each side
Common border styles include solid, dotted, dashed, double, groove, ridge, inset, and outset. The exact dash segment length and dot spacing are not specified, so their appearance can vary between browser implementations.

Set all four sides with border-style, or use a side shorthand when one edge needs different treatment:

}To set only one part of a border, use properties such as border-width, border-style, or border-color, or their side-specific forms. Logical side properties such as border-inline-start can be useful when the relevant side should follow the writing direction rather than always mean the physical left or right. }Multiple values let you set corners individually. Horizontal and vertical radii can also be different to create elliptical corners. For percentage radii, the horizontal component is relative to the box’s width and the vertical component to its height. See MDN’s border-radius reference.
Understand how borders affect element size
A border sits between an element’s padding and margin. Under the standard content-box model, the declared width and height describe the content box; border thickness is added outside those dimensions. Under the alternative border-box model, the border is included within the declared dimensions, leaving less room for content.

For example, a 200-pixel content width with a two-pixel border on both left and right has an outer width of 204 pixels under content-box, before margins. Under border-box, the declared 200 pixels include both borders. If adding a border changes alignment or causes overflow, check the element’s computed box-sizing and account for the model in your sizing rules. The MDN CSS box model guide explains the distinction.
Border or outline: which should you use?
A border is part of the box and affects its dimensions according to box-sizing. An outline is drawn outside the border and does not take up layout space, making it useful for indicating keyboard focus without shifting neighboring content. An outline may not be rectangular in every case.

Troubleshoot a border that does not show
- Check the style first. A width and color alone do not make a visible border; add a line style such as
solid. - Check the selector and cascade. Confirm the intended element matches the selector and that a later or more specific rule is not overriding its border.
- Check the color against the background. A border can be present but difficult to see if its color blends in.
- Check the side you styled. A side-specific declaration only draws that edge; inspect the corresponding edge of the element.
- Check size expectations separately. A border may alter the outer dimensions under
content-box; it can appear displaced or cause overflow even when it is rendering correctly.
