Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →TestCafe is a Node.js-based end-to-end testing framework for web applications. You write tests in JavaScript or TypeScript, then run them from the command line against a browser. The runner is not tied to your app’s backend language, so it can test a web interface built with any server-side stack.
What TestCafe does
TestCafe automates browser interactions to check that user-facing workflows behave as expected. A test describes a starting page, actions such as clicking or typing, and assertions about the result. The open-source runner is suited to teams that want tests authored and maintained as code.
TestCafe runs on Node.js and the official getting-started guide lists Linux, Windows, and macOS as supported operating systems. See the official getting-started guide and project repository for current setup details.
Install TestCafe and write a first test
Install TestCafe in the project so its dependency and runner are available to the team. The command below follows the official npm setup pattern; it does not pin an old version. Check the project’s current release before locking a version.

npm install --save-dev testcafe
Create tests/home.js with a fixture, a starting URL, one browser action, and an assertion:
import { Selector } from 'testcafe';
fixture`Home page`
.page`https://example.com`;
test('the page has a heading', async t => {
await t
.expect(Selector('h1').innerText).ok();
});
This example checks that an h1 exists and has non-empty text. Replace the URL and selector with stable elements from your own application. Prefer accessible roles or dependable test attributes when your project supports them; fragile selectors tied to layout or generated class names can make tests harder to maintain.
Run the test from the command line
The general command form is:
npx testcafe <browser> <test-file>
For example, run against Chrome with:
npx testcafe chrome tests/home.js
The browser name must be recognized by TestCafe and the browser must be installed or otherwise configured for the selected execution mode. The CLI can also receive multiple test files and browser targets; consult the current CLI documentation for supported syntax and options.

How TestCafe handles waits, concurrency, and CI
Automatic waiting
TestCafe documents automatic waiting around navigation and browser actions, including waiting for selectors and assertions. This helps synchronize a test with page activity without requiring fixed pauses everywhere. It does not guarantee that every test is reliable: tests can still fail because of unstable selectors, application state, race conditions, or external dependencies.
Concurrent execution
The runner supports concurrent test execution. Concurrency can use available resources more effectively, but it also means tests must not depend on shared mutable state, a particular execution order, or the same account or data in conflicting ways. Start serially, establish isolation, then enable concurrency and verify that results remain valid.
CI workflows and diagnostics
TestCafe can run from a console in a CI workflow and supports reporters and integrations described in its project documentation. Before adopting it in a pipeline, confirm that the runner can launch the required browser in the CI image, save useful test output, and return a failing exit status when assertions fail. The project also documents JavaScript error detection and live mode; treat these as workflow features, not guarantees against application defects or flaky tests.

Browser coverage and execution choices
The official browser guide lists Chromium, Chrome, Chrome Canary, Chromium-based Microsoft Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Safari, alongside remote, cloud, mobile, headless, and emulation execution options. Availability depends on the operating system, browser installation, and execution configuration; verify your exact target and browser version in the browser documentation.
TestCafe 3.0 discontinued official support for Internet Explorer 11 and legacy Microsoft Edge. The FAQ describes a policy of testing against the two latest versions of each popular browser, subject to exceptions. That policy is not a substitute for checking the actual browser versions your users or compliance requirements demand.
| Execution choice | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Locally installed desktop browser | Developer iteration and debugging against a browser already available on the machine. | Browser installation, executable discovery, operating-system compatibility, and target version. |
| Headless browser | Automated runs where a visible browser window is unnecessary. | Current supported browser and headless configuration; do not assume headless output exactly matches every desktop environment. |
| Remote or cloud browser | Coverage on environments not installed on the developer or CI machine. | Current provider integration, credentials, network access, browser availability, and provider terms. |
| Mobile or emulated environment | Testing mobile-oriented behavior or selected device/browser configurations. | Whether the mode represents a real device/browser or an emulation, and which behaviors it can validate. |
Open-source TestCafe runner or TestCafe Studio?
The open-source TestCafe runner is licensed under MIT and supports code-authored JavaScript or TypeScript tests. TestCafe Studio is a separate commercial product from DevExpress that adds a graphical interface, visual recording, and codeless authoring workflows. Studio may suit teams seeking less code-centric test creation; teams comfortable maintaining test code can begin with the runner.

Remote browsers and provider integrations
The project documentation describes browser provider integrations for remote and cloud execution, with examples including BrowserStack infrastructure and a LambdaTest provider integration. Treat these as examples, not a guarantee that a given integration remains supported in the same form: verify the current provider plugin, setup instructions, browser matrix, and commercial terms before designing a CI dependency.

Screenshot the rendered page without writing a browser test
TestCafe is for testing interactions and assertions; if the immediate need is a clean screenshot of a rendered URL, ScreenshotNeo is a separate screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace end-to-end assertions, but it can avoid setting up a browser runner for a capture-only task.
Or skip the browser setup
Make one GET request with a URL; the response can be PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. This cURL example saves a WebP screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with response headers indicating the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Check release and support details before adopting
Release status and browser compatibility are volatile. The GitHub release listing surfaced v3.7.6 with a visible date of “07 Jul” but no year in that listing extract, so that alone does not establish which version is current today. Check the official releases and browser guide before selecting a version, browser matrix, or CI image. Individual issue reports—including reports dated September 2026—should be evaluated as specific cases, not treated as proof of broad incompatibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to build my application with Node.js to use TestCafe?
No. Node.js is required for the TestCafe tooling, but the framework tests a web application in a browser and is not tied to the app’s backend language.
Can TestCafe replace unit tests?
No. It covers end-to-end behavior through a browser; it complements rather than replaces unit and integration tests.
