Rebalance the portfolio as the product and its risks change.
What each testing approach contributes
Testing methods are complementary because they answer different questions. A scripted test checks whether specified behavior still works under repeatable conditions. Exploratory testing lets a tester investigate the product beyond predefined scenarios, including unexpected interactions and usability concerns.
The ISTQB Advanced Level Agile Tester syllabus (v2.0 GA Release, 2026-04-17) cautions that “Scripted end-to-end tests may miss unexpected behaviors that arise from real usage.” It describes exploratory testing as a complement that can help uncover unexpected behaviors, usability defects, and edge cases. Read the ISTQB syllabus.
Build a portfolio around risk
Start with the failures that would matter most, rather than choosing a fixed ratio of test types. Consider critical user journeys, recently changed areas, important system boundaries, and places where failure would have significant consequences. Risk assessment can guide both automated and manual regression work; the ISTQB syllabus discusses risk-based prioritization.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify important risks. List critical flows, high-impact failure modes, changed components, and areas where behavior is uncertain.
- Choose the narrowest useful check. Use unit-level checks for small, isolated behavior and integration checks for important interactions between components or services.
- Automate stable regression scenarios. Automate specified, repeatable behavior when the resulting feedback is useful and the checks remain maintainable.
- Explore uncertainty. Use focused exploratory sessions where scripts are incomplete, realistic use may reveal surprising interactions, or usability and edge cases need investigation.
- Add end-to-end coverage selectively. Cover critical journeys and high-risk behavior, not every possible combination of features.
- Revisit the balance. Update the portfolio as features, risks, and observed failure patterns change.
Choose test levels deliberately
Test levels describe scope, from narrow checks to broader end-to-end tests. A useful portfolio combines levels rather than treating one as a replacement for all the others. The UK Home Office’s test pyramid guidance spans unit through end-to-end testing and recommends reserving end-to-end checks for critical user flows and high-risk areas because they can be complex and costly to maintain. See the Home Office test pyramid guidance.
| Approach | Useful question | Strength | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Narrow automated checks | Does this specified behavior still work? | Repeatable feedback on a focused part of the system. | By themselves, predefined checks do not investigate behavior outside their scenarios. |
| Integration checks | Do important components or boundaries work together? | Focuses verification on interactions that matter to the system. | Select the boundaries according to risk; broad coverage is not an end in itself. |
| Exploratory testing | What happens when a tester investigates realistic or unexpected use? | Can reveal unexpected behavior, usability defects, and edge cases scripts may miss. | It does not provide the same repeatable execution as a scripted regression check. |
| End-to-end tests | Does a critical user journey work across the system? | Exercises a broad flow in a more complete context. | Can be complex and costly to maintain, so keep them focused on critical flows and high-risk areas. |
Keep automation and exploration connected
When an exploratory session finds a meaningful defect, first record the conditions and steps that exposed it. If the failure is reproducible and the expected behavior can be specified, add an appropriate regression check at the narrowest practical level. Continue exploring related paths when the underlying risk is broader than the single reproduced case. This way, automation preserves known behavior while exploration continues to probe what has not yet been specified.

Automation is most useful when it provides timely regression feedback and remains maintainable. A growing set of broad end-to-end checks can impose complexity and maintenance effort; use narrower checks where they adequately address the risk, and reserve broad tests for journeys whose full integration matters.
Common ways to misbalance a test portfolio
- Relying only on scripts: repeatable checks cover the behavior they specify, but may miss unexpected usage, usability issues, and unanticipated edge cases. Include exploration where those concerns matter.
- Relying only on exploration: exploratory investigation can uncover surprises, but does not replace repeatable checks for stable, important regression scenarios.
- Making every check end-to-end: broad tests are not automatically better; their complexity and maintenance cost make selective use important.
- Choosing a universal coverage target: no fixed percentage or prescribed number of tests is established here. Let product risks and quality objectives determine the balance.
