Selenium is useful for scraping pages when the information you need appears only after client-side JavaScript runs, or when you must interact with the page as a visitor would. A Selenium script controls a real browser, waits for the particular content it needs, then extracts that content. The key is not to assume that page navigation means the application is ready.
What Selenium does—and when to use it
Selenium WebDriver lets JavaScript code control a browser through the Selenium language binding and a browser driver. It can inspect browser-rendered content and perform interactions such as navigating and locating elements. The browser can run locally or remotely. See the Selenium documentation for its browser-control model.
Use Selenium when the data you need is added or changed by client-side scripts, or when accessing it requires browser interaction. If the needed data is already available in a server response or a documented data interface, a direct HTTP request may be simpler and less resource-intensive. That is a practical engineering choice, not a guarantee that HTTP will work for every site.
- Rendering or interaction required: use a browser and wait for the relevant page state.
- Data available without browser execution: consider a direct HTTP approach first.
- Remote execution needed: Selenium documents remote browser use and points to Selenium Grid; assess the infrastructure and operating cost for your workload.
Browser fidelity comes with trade-offs: browser sessions consume resources and add runtime, setup, and maintenance complexity. The cited Selenium documentation establishes browser control, but does not provide a universal performance benchmark against HTTP-only scraping. Choose based on whether browser behavior is actually necessary, not simply because a page contains JavaScript.

Set up a JavaScript Selenium script
The Selenium JavaScript binding is the selenium-webdriver package. The official JavaScript API reference currently says Node.js 22 or newer is required; check that page before installing because runtime requirements can change.
- Install a supported Node.js release and make sure the browser you intend to automate is available.
- Create a project directory, initialize it with
npm init -y, and install the binding withnpm install selenium-webdriver. - Save the following as
scrape.jsand run it withnode scrape.js.

Replace the example URL and selector with the page and content you are authorized to access. Browser and driver setup can differ by environment; consult the Selenium documentation for the browser and execution mode you use.

Wait for the content, not just navigation
A navigation can finish before a JavaScript application has rendered or revealed the element your next command needs. Selenium explains that the page-load readiness state concerns assets defined in the HTML; scripts may subsequently change the page, leaving an element absent or hidden when automation proceeds. Choose a wait condition that matches the next action
- Wait for an element to be located when you need it to exist in the DOM.
- Wait for it to become visible before reading visible text or interacting with it.
- Wait for a result container, changed text, or another meaningful application state when that is the real prerequisite.
The example uses an explicit wait with a timeout and a specific condition. Prefer this over a fixed sleep: a sleep may finish before a slow page is ready, or waste time after a fast page has finished. Selenium also warns that mixing implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable timing. Use one deliberate waiting strategy rather than layering both kinds of wait.

Debug the missing state
- Identify the exact state the next command requires: for example, whether the element must exist, be visible, or contain updated text.
- Check that the locator matches the current DOM and the correct element.
- Wait for that condition and set a timeout suitable for the task.
- If the wait expires, investigate whether the selector is stale, the page changed, content did not load, or the expected state never occurs. Do not just keep increasing the timeout without finding the missing condition.
Extract only the data you need
Once the relevant element is ready, read its text or attributes with WebDriver, then close the session with driver.quit(). Keep extraction scoped to the fields needed for your task. For multiple results, locate the repeated elements and read the specific values from each; make sure the page has reached the state that populates the whole result set before collecting it.
For pages that load additional results only after scrolling, clicking, or another user-like action, perform that action and then wait for the resulting state before extracting. Selenium supports browser interaction, but the appropriate selector and sequence depend on the target page; verify them against its current DOM rather than relying on a locator from an unrelated example.

Reduce unnecessary waiting without making the script flaky
Selenium’s page-load strategy can avoid waiting for some assets that are irrelevant to a task. This is an optimization to consider only when your script still waits for the actual content it needs. A faster navigation milestone is not proof that a JavaScript-rendered result is ready; retain a condition-based wait for the next action’s prerequisite.
For larger or recurring workloads, remote browser execution is an option documented by Selenium, including Selenium Grid. It changes where browser sessions run, not the need to synchronize against the page’s state. Account for the additional infrastructure and debugging complexity when deciding whether to scale beyond a local session.

Respect the site’s instructions and applicable rules
Check the target site’s terms and permissions and consider the obligations that apply to your use and location. MDN describes robots.txt as a publicly accessible, root-level file containing instructions for crawlers. It is optional, does not secure a site, and is not a grant of permission or a legal determination. Some robots do not follow it. Do not treat its contents as a substitute for checking the site’s rules and your own obligations.

Can Selenium scrape a page that changes after it loads?
Yes, if the browser can render the page and the script waits for the relevant updated element or state before extracting it.
Does robots.txt authorize scraping?
No. It provides crawler instructions; it is neither access control nor blanket permission. Check the target’s terms and applicable obligations separately.
Is Selenium always better than an HTTP request?
No. Use Selenium when browser rendering or interaction is needed. If the required data is available directly, an HTTP approach may be simpler, though the best choice depends on the target and task.
