To make a website cross-browser compatible, decide which browsers and devices your audience uses, build with web standards and fallbacks, design for different screen sizes, and test important tasks in that support matrix throughout development. Compatibility means the site remains usable and accessible—not that every browser renders it pixel for pixel identically.

What does cross-browser compatibility mean?

A compatible site delivers its essential content and functions across the browsers, operating systems, and devices you have chosen to support. Differences in fonts, antialiasing, form controls, and other browser details can remain without making the site incompatible. The goal is a useful experience, not identical pixels.

Two techniques help preserve that experience. Progressive enhancement starts with a solid baseline of semantic HTML and basic behavior, then adds enhancements where supported. Graceful degradation allows an advanced feature to be unavailable while keeping the core task usable. MDN explains the web standards model and these approaches in its web standards model guide.

Which browsers should you test your website on?

There is no practical way to test every browser, version, operating system, and device combination. Create a support matrix based on the environments that matter to your actual users and business rather than choosing an arbitrary universal list. MDN’s publishing guidance recommends prioritizing relevant users because exhaustive testing is impractical.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build a support matrix

  • Use site analytics: identify browser families, operating systems, and device classes visiting an existing site. Treat analytics as evidence about your audience, not a promise that every visitor uses a major browser.
  • Account for geography and requirements: customer location, contractual obligations, internal policies, and the consequences of a failed task may change what you support.
  • Include support history: recurring problems or requests can reveal environments that deserve explicit coverage.
  • Record minimum versions and critical features: state which browser versions you support and which capabilities—such as login, payment, or document access—must work.
  • Review the matrix periodically: audience patterns and browser releases change, so a support policy should not be treated as permanent.

For a new site without useful analytics, make an explicit initial choice from the intended audience and requirements, then revise it as real usage and support reports arrive. MDN gives a North American e-commerce example that includes recent Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox, and Safari releases and WCAG AA accessibility; that is an example, not a universal browser list or compliance requirement for every site.

How do you build for browsers without relying on fragile hacks?

Start with standard foundations

Use semantic HTML for structure, conventional CSS for presentation, and web-platform JavaScript APIs that fit your declared support matrix. A form should remain a form, navigation should be links, and interactive controls should use elements that have the expected keyboard and browser behavior. Standards-based foundations reduce the number of browser-specific assumptions you must maintain.

Check support before depending on a newer feature

Before adopting a CSS property or JavaScript API that is important to a task, check whether it is available in every browser version in your matrix. MDN Browser Compatibility Data provides machine-readable web-platform support information. If a required environment lacks a feature, provide a practical alternative or make the feature an optional enhancement rather than letting the core task fail.

Keep workarounds narrow

Avoid browser-specific CSS hacks as a first response. Reproduce the problem, identify the actual unsupported feature or behavior, and prefer a standards-based fix or a contained workaround for a verified defect. Retest the environment that exposed the problem as well as the rest of the support matrix.

How do you make the layout work across screen sizes?

Responsive design is part of compatibility. A desktop page made smaller is not automatically usable on a phone. Build layouts that reflow at relevant viewport sizes and inspect both portrait and landscape orientations where they matter. MDN’s responsive design guide explains the principles.

  • Images, video, and other media at different sizes and orientations.
  • Modals, sticky headers, and other overlays that can obscure content or controls.

Choose breakpoints when the content needs them, then verify the resulting layout on relevant devices rather than relying only on a desktop browser’s resized window.

How do you test a website across browsers and devices?

Test early and repeatedly, starting with the highest-priority browsers and the user journeys most important to the site. A focused set of repeatable checks often finds problems sooner than a late, broad visual review.

Test critical journeys and behavior

For each feature, check the affected environments while the code is still easy to isolate. Verify rendering and behavior, not only whether a page loads. Typical checks include navigation, buttons, forms, media, login, checkout where relevant, and browser-dependent APIs. Try keyboard-only use, and include a screen reader or other assistive technology where appropriate. Accessibility is part of whether the experience is genuinely usable.

Use screenshots when visual regressions matter, but pair them with functional checks: a screenshot cannot tell you whether a form submits, a menu works from the keyboard, or a checkout flow completes.

Choose the testing setup to match the coverage you need

Approach Useful for Limits to consider
Local browsers Quick, low-overhead checks in browsers available to the team. Coverage is limited to installed browsers and devices.
Emulators and virtual machines Expanding operating-system and device coverage without owning every configuration. They do not replace physical-device testing when hardware behavior matters.
Automated browser tests Repeating functional checks and catching regressions in important workflows. Tests need maintenance and should cover the browsers and versions relevant to the support policy.
Hosted browser/device services Accessing a broader range of browser and device environments or integrating checks into a development workflow. Compare actual browser, device, and version coverage, real-device needs, CI integration, collaboration features, and current plan costs before choosing. Prices depend on the service and plan.

Selenium and Playwright are options for browser automation. Playwright documents using current browser versions to detect failures before updates reach users in its browser documentation. MDN names BrowserStack and Sauce Labs as commercial options for automated browser coverage and development workflows in its website testing guide. Their current prices and plan details are not stated here, so check their current offerings directly before selecting one.

When evaluating any setup, compare browser/OS coverage, physical devices versus emulation, manual effort versus automation, reproducibility and CI integration, visual versus functional validation, and total cost and team overhead. No single approach is best for every project.

Why does my website look different in Safari?

A visual difference is a clue to investigate, not proof that Safari is broken. Browsers may differ in layout behavior, fonts, media, form controls, and access to device APIs. BrowserStack’s cross-browser testing guidance discusses these categories as vendor guidance.

  1. Reproduce the issue in the affected Safari version and device or operating system, and record the conditions.
  2. Determine whether the failure concerns layout, a feature the browser does not support, form behavior, fonts or media, or a third-party integration.
  3. Check the relevant feature’s support and use a standards-based adjustment or fallback that preserves the required task.
  4. Retest the original case and the other environments in your support matrix to catch regressions.

Apply the same method to other browsers. Avoid changing code based only on a screenshot comparison if the difference does not affect usability, accessibility, or a requirement.

Or skip the browser setup

If your task is to capture a page image while checking compatibility, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one GET request. For example, this cURL call saves a WebP screenshot of a page:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for setup and options. Screenshot captures can help compare rendering, but they do not replace testing interactions across your browser matrix. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents screenshot tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
