There is no universally best C# testing framework for Selenium. Selenium WebDriver controls a browser; a .NET test framework discovers and runs tests, evaluates assertions, and reports pass or fail. Start with the framework that fits your team’s existing .NET tooling, then verify its runner and target-framework support and choose how browser tests will be isolated and parallelized.

What a Selenium C# testing framework does

Selenium WebDriver is the browser-control layer, not a test framework. It can navigate, interact with pages, and retrieve browser state, but it does not decide whether a test passed. Pair the Selenium .NET binding with a framework that supplies test discovery, execution, assertions, and results. Selenium describes this distinction in its component guidance.

Keep three pieces distinct when selecting a setup: WebDriver communicates with the browser; a test framework organizes and runs test cases; and a test platform or runner integrates execution with tools such as the IDE and CI system. Selenium Server/Grid is a separate option when tests need remote browser communication, not a replacement for the test framework.

Compare the main .NET options

Microsoft identifies NUnit, MSTest, xUnit.net, and TUnit as popular .NET testing frameworks. Selenium’s own .NET examples specifically demonstrate NUnit and MSTest; that is useful evidence for their documented setup, but it does not establish that one framework is best or validate every integration equally.

Framework What the documentation establishes What to evaluate for Selenium
NUnit Selenium provides a dotnet new NUnit starter-project path, and its components guide uses NUnit as its .NET example. NUnit documents opt-in in-assembly parallelization using attributes. Check the target runtime and configure parallelizable tests deliberately; support varies by target.
MSTest Selenium’s example project includes MSTest package references. Microsoft documents support for VSTest and Microsoft.Testing.Platform. Tests run sequentially within an assembly by default. A candidate to assess if your team already uses Microsoft’s testing tools. Choose whether and at what scope to enable concurrency.
xUnit.net Microsoft lists xUnit.net as a popular .NET framework. Its documentation distinguishes parallelization inside an assembly from runner-level execution across assemblies. Review test/collection isolation and runner configuration; these are separate concurrency controls.
TUnit Microsoft lists TUnit among popular .NET frameworks. The Selenium-specific pages reviewed for this comparison did not provide a TUnit Selenium example. Before adopting it, verify Selenium setup, test-platform and IDE/CI integration, package compatibility, and support for your target framework.

Framework documentation and support evolve. Check the current project documentation and compatibility information for your chosen framework, runner, and target framework rather than treating an example’s package versions as current recommendations. Microsoft explains the distinction between test frameworks and platforms in its .NET testing documentation.

Choose based on your project, not a universal ranking

  1. Identify your existing environment. Confirm the project targets .NET and note the runner, IDE, and CI requirements your team already supports.
  2. Choose the test framework independently of WebDriver. Add the Selenium .NET binding and the chosen framework’s required SDK, adapter, or runner packages. Selenium’s .NET setup guide shows CLI and project-reference approaches; its example uses dotnet test.
  3. Check the features your suite needs. Confirm data-driven tests, fixture lifecycle, filtering, reporting, and compatibility with your target framework and test platform. The available framework documentation does not establish a complete feature-by-feature comparison.
  4. Plan isolation before enabling parallelism. Decide whether each test creates and owns its own browser session and test data. Framework scheduling cannot make shared browser state or shared data safe.

Selenium’s .NET installation material and starter instructions are in its WebDriver library installation guide. Treat version numbers shown in examples as examples, not standing recommendations.

Understand parallel execution before speeding up a suite

Browser tests can compete for browser processes, machine capacity, accounts, or test data. Parallel execution is therefore both a framework setting and an isolation decision. The defaults and configuration model differ:

  • NUnit: Framework-level parallel execution is not enabled by default and is declared with attributes. NUnit documents support on desktop .NET runtimes and .NET Standard 2.0, while its .NET Standard 1.6 build does not support it. Confirm the actual target before relying on this capability.
  • MSTest: Tests within an assembly run sequentially by default. Microsoft documents configuration using assembly attributes, .runsettings, testconfig.json, and MSBuild properties, with class- or method-level scopes. Tests that share state or resources may need DoNotParallelize.
  • xUnit.net: Parallel work within an assembly and concurrent execution across assemblies are distinct. Collection behavior and configuration matter, and runner settings can override framework-level settings. Verify the behavior for the framework version and runner in use.

For any framework, start with isolated sessions and data, then increase concurrency while watching for resource contention and nondeterministic failures. A test that only passes when run alone often points to shared state or an ordering dependency, not a reason to raise the parallelism setting.

Set up and run a minimal Selenium .NET suite

The following is a minimal NUnit-oriented workflow based on Selenium’s documented starter path. Use the package versions and target framework appropriate to your project; do not assume versions from an example remain current.

  1. Install the .NET SDK supported by your project and create or open a C# test project.
  2. Create an NUnit project if starting fresh: dotnet new NUnit -n BrowserTests.
  3. Add Selenium’s .NET binding: dotnet add BrowserTests package Selenium.WebDriver. Ensure the project also has the test SDK and NUnit adapter packages required by its chosen runner.
  4. Add a test using the framework’s test attributes, create a WebDriver session, perform browser actions, and assert a result. Make session cleanup reliable so a failed assertion does not leave a browser process behind.
  5. Run the suite: dotnet test BrowserTests. Selenium’s examples also show filtering by fully qualified method name or a unique test name; use the filter syntax supported by your test platform and adapter.

This is a setup outline rather than a complete application test: browser availability, driver management, test URL, and framework-specific fixture lifecycle depend on the project. Follow the current Selenium and framework docs for those details.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a C# test framework or a substitute for Selenium WebDriver assertions. It can be useful when a workflow needs a rendered screenshot or PDF without setting up browser automation in the calling code. See ScreenshotNeo for the service overview.

Or skip the browser setup

For a screenshot rather than an interactive browser test, one GET request can return an image or PDF. The cURL example below saves a WebP image:

Common setup and execution problems

  • dotnet test finds no tests: Check that the test SDK, framework adapter, and compatible runner are installed and that the test project is included in the command’s target. Verify the test attributes match the framework being used.
  • The project builds but cannot launch the browser: Confirm the browser and driver setup required by the Selenium version and environment. The test framework runs the case; it does not itself provide browser connectivity.
  • Tests pass alone but fail in a suite: Look for shared WebDriver instances, accounts, files, or mutable test data. Isolate those resources before enabling parallel execution.
  • Parallel settings appear ineffective or behave differently in CI: Check both framework-level settings and runner/platform configuration. This is especially important for xUnit’s separate in-assembly and cross-assembly controls and for MSTest’s configurable scopes.
  • A configuration option is rejected: Confirm the framework, adapter, runner, and target framework versions together. Documentation examples may describe different versions or platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Does Selenium WebDriver include assertions?

No. WebDriver automates browser communication; use a .NET test framework to assert expected results and report pass or fail.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does choosing a framework mean Selenium has equally detailed examples for it?

No. Selenium’s cited .NET examples cover NUnit and MSTest. Microsoft lists xUnit.net and TUnit as popular .NET frameworks, but the Selenium-specific material cited here does not provide a TUnit example.

Is Selenium Grid a test framework?

No. Selenium Server/Grid supports remote browser communication; it does not replace the framework that discovers and evaluates tests.
