For Vite-based Storybook frameworks, Storybook documents the Vitest addon as the integrated option; use the test runner when you need its broader framework support or cannot use the addon.
What Storybook component tests should cover
A story configures a component’s props and context for a particular state. As Storybook puts it, “Storybook stories are test cases for your UI components in their various states and configurations.” Storybook’s UI testing guide describes using those states as the basis for checks.
Start with states that matter to users: for example, a default view, an empty state, validation feedback, or a loading state where relevant. Then decide what question each test answers:
- Render: Does this configured state render without an error?
- Interaction: Does the component respond correctly when a user types, clicks, or otherwise acts?
- Accessibility: Do automated checks flag accessibility issues in the story?
- Visual appearance: Does the rendered appearance match what is expected?
- End-to-end workflow: Does the behavior work in the context of the running application?
These methods complement one another. A render check does not prove that interactions work, and a story-level interaction test is not a test of every part of a deployed application. Storybook also cautions that applying interaction tests to every component can be expensive to maintain. Choose checks based on the risk and contract of each component.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose how to run the stories
Storybook documents two execution routes: the Vitest addon and the Storybook test runner. Their fit depends on your framework, desired test types, and workflow. These are documented comparison points, not a guarantee for every project version or configuration; verify current support for your Storybook version before adopting one.

Storybook’s migration guide describes the Vitest-based solution as the successor to the test runner and says existing stories do not need to change just to migrate. Avoid copying old package names or setup steps from tutorials without checking the documentation for your project’s version.
Write a render check
Once a story represents a meaningful state, run it through the testing integration you chose. The Storybook Test workflow transforms stories into tests; a basic test passes when a story renders successfully and fails when it errors. This is useful smoke coverage for the states represented by your stories, not proof that every interaction or full application workflow works.

Use the setup instructions for your selected integration rather than assuming a universal configuration: framework and version details determine the project-specific steps. For Vite-based frameworks, begin with the addon guide; for the test runner, ensure Storybook is running as required by its guide.
Test interactions with a play function
For an interactive component, add an asynchronous play function to the story. Use its canvas and user-event helpers to perform actions as a user would, then assert the visible result or a mocked callback. Storybook’s interaction testing guide demonstrates entering credentials, clicking a button, and checking a mocked function.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Keep assertions tied to the behavior a user can observe or to a clear component contract. For example, a form story can represent its initial state; its interaction test can enter values, submit, and check the resulting feedback. The exact story and assertion should reflect the component’s intended behavior rather than merely duplicating implementation details.
The Interactions panel displays the sequence of interaction steps and lets you inspect or step through them while debugging. The Vitest addon can run tests in the Storybook UI, an editor, the CLI, or CI; the test runner can run from a terminal or CI.

Add accessibility, visual, and end-to-end checks selectively
Storybook’s accessibility addon runs automated checks on stories. Treat its results as a way to find issues, not as proof of complete accessibility. Visual checks answer a different question: whether the component’s appearance matches expectations. Interaction tests check behavior, while snapshot testing is listed in Storybook’s comparison for the test runner, not the Vitest addon.
When behavior depends on a broader application flow, reuse stories in Playwright or Cypress end-to-end tests. Storybook documents this reuse for cases where the test needs a full workflow, rather than only an isolated component state. See Storybook’s testing integrations for the documented approaches.

If what you need is a screenshot of a page or component state—not a Storybook interaction test—ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. The example below captures a URL as WebP; consult the API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools for screenshots and PDFs. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. These page captures complement component tests; they do not replace render, interaction, accessibility, or end-to-end checks.
