The right way to inspect elements on an Android device depends on what you need to learn: use Android Studio’s Layout Inspector to debug your own running app, UI Automator to examine controls exposed for testing, or accessibility tools and TalkBack to check what assistive technology users experience. These tools inspect different views of an interface; none is a universal way to expose every visible pixel as an element.

Choose the right Android inspection tool

Your goal Start with What it reveals Important limit
Debug the layout of an app you are developing Android Studio Layout Inspector A running app’s component tree and attributes, with selection and snapshot tools; it supports View, Compose, and hybrid layouts. Behavior can depend on Android Studio and device versions. Attribute inspection may restart an activity. Android Developers’ Layout Inspector guide describes the current workflow.
Find controls for an automated test UI Automator Elements exposed in the UI or accessibility hierarchy, and APIs for finding and interacting with them. The hierarchy represents exposed UI and semantics, not every pixel or custom-drawn object. See Android’s Views accessibility-testing guide and UI Automator documentation.
Check for common accessibility issues Accessibility Scanner and Android Studio checks Suggestions for common label, contrast, layout, and interaction issues. Automated checks cannot establish that all runtime behavior is accessible; secure windows limit some scanning. See Android’s accessibility testing guidance.
Understand the screen-reader experience TalkBack or another accessibility service How focus and semantics are communicated during actual assistive-technology use. Manual, user-oriented testing is needed alongside automated checks. See Compose inspect and debug guidance.

Inspect a running app with Android Studio Layout Inspector

Layout Inspector is the best starting point when you need to understand the runtime structure or properties of your own app. It can inspect View-based, Compose, and hybrid interfaces. You can connect to an emulator or physical device; a particular phone model is not required.

  1. Run your app on an emulator or a connected Android device.
  2. In Android Studio, open Running Devices and start Layout Inspector for the running app. Exact controls may vary by Android Studio version; consult the official Layout Inspector guide if the labels differ.
  3. Use the Component Tree to locate a view or composable. Select it to examine its properties in the Attributes panel.
  4. If overlap makes an item hard to select, use Deep Inspect to choose it, then disable Deep Inspect when you want to interact with the app again.
  5. For design review, capture or import a layout snapshot, or load a bitmap overlay to compare the rendered screen with a mockup.

Compose-specific inspection

For Jetpack Compose interfaces, Layout Inspector can show composable structure and help identify recomposition or skipped-recomposition behavior. These details are useful when diagnosing how the UI is built or updated; they do not replace checking how the finished screen behaves for users.

Version-sensitive behavior

Android’s documentation notes that inspecting attributes may restart an activity. This behavior can vary with the Android Studio and device combination, so save work in the app and check the current guide before relying on a particular interaction or setting.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Inspect controls exposed to UI Automator

Use UI Automator when your goal is to locate or interact with controls in a test. Android documents UI Automator Viewer as a graphical way to scan the foreground UI hierarchy and see component properties. Its test APIs provide ways to find and interact with UI elements; the current documentation describes a predicate-based API and waiting for the accessibility tree to settle when a test needs the interface to become stable.

Choose this route when you need to answer questions such as whether a button is exposed to automation, whether a test can locate it, or whether the UI is ready before an assertion or screenshot. Follow Android’s UI Automator guide for the API and setup that match your project.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

When an element does not appear

A hierarchy is a representation of what the app and framework expose—not a pixel-by-pixel map. A custom-drawn object or other visual detail may not appear as its own element. Compare the hierarchy with the actual screen, then test the interaction directly. If a control is absent or has poor accessible text, investigate its semantics and accessibility properties rather than assuming the tool can inspect every visual object.

Check accessibility labels and real assistive-technology behavior

For accessibility review, inspect the labels and semantics exposed by the app, run automated checks, and then use the interface with TalkBack or another relevant accessibility service. A content label does not have to be visible on screen: an accessibility service such as TalkBack may use it to communicate an element’s meaning.

Use automated checks as a first pass

Android says, “The Accessibility Scanner app scans your screen and suggests ways to improve the accessibility of your app.” Scanner and Android Studio checks can flag common issues, including missing content labels and potential layout or interaction problems. Treat the results as suggestions to investigate, not proof that every user journey works accessibly. Android’s guidance also notes that some issues arise only while an app is running on a device and cannot be detected by checks alone.

Test the experience manually

Navigate with TalkBack and observe what is announced, how focus moves, and whether controls can be used as intended. Android’s Compose accessibility guidance discusses Layout Inspector, UI Automator, and Android Accessibility Suite tools. Manual use complements the structural information and automated suggestions.

Know when scanning is limited

Secure windows using FLAG_SECURE cannot be captured for Accessibility Scanner image or contrast analysis. Scanner results therefore may not cover protected content. See Google’s Accessibility Scanner FAQ and explanation of Scanner results.

Troubleshoot common inspection problems

  • Layout Inspector is not showing the app you expect: Make sure the app is running on the emulator or connected device and select its running process in the inspector. If controls or panels differ, check the documentation for your Android Studio and device combination.
  • Selecting an overlapping element is difficult: Use Deep Inspect to select the component, then turn Deep Inspect off before resuming interaction with the app.
  • The app restarts during attribute inspection: Android documents that this can happen. Save any in-app work first and verify the behavior against the current Layout Inspector guide for your setup.
  • UI Automator cannot find a visible object: The object may not be exposed as a distinct hierarchy element, especially if it is custom-drawn. Inspect the exposed hierarchy and test the interaction rather than treating the tree as a complete rendering map.
  • An accessibility scan misses a screen or contrast issue: A secure window such as one using FLAG_SECURE blocks image and contrast capture. Review the screen manually with assistive technology where possible.
  • A scan reports no problems, but an interaction still fails: Automated checks have limits, including for issues that appear only at runtime. Reproduce the flow on-device and test it with the relevant accessibility service.
