A JavaScript RangeError means a value passed to an operation is outside the range that operation accepts. There is no universal fix: read the exact error and stack trace, identify the operation and its input, then validate or correct that input. For example, an invalid array length, an out-of-range number-formatting precision, an invalid radix, and runaway recursion require different fixes.
Find the operation that threw the RangeError
- Read the complete error message. It may name the invalid argument or operation, such as
invalid array lengthorprecision is out of range. - Use the stack trace to locate the call site. Find the first frame in your code and inspect the arguments and values used there.
- Trace how the value was produced. Check conversions, arithmetic, user input, and data from external sources. A string converted to a number, for example, may produce a fractional, negative, or otherwise unexpected value.
- Apply that operation’s specific rule. Validate the value before calling the operation; do not just suppress the exception or raise a limit without confirming the value is appropriate.
- Reproduce the failure and test a valid boundary. Keep a regression test for the failing input when appropriate.
RangeError identifies a category of problem, not one particular bug. The examples below cover common documented messages, not every RangeError an API can throw. See MDN’s RangeError reference for the broader error reference.
Fix “RangeError: invalid array length”
Inspect array creation, changes to an existing array’s length, and operations that grow an array. A requested length cannot be negative, fractional, or above the supported maximum. MDN documents the maximum Array length as 232−1; this is not a universal allocation limit for other objects such as ArrayBuffer.
Check the value before allocating
Validate that a data-derived length is an integer in the range your application can safely handle before using it. For example:

function makeArray(length) {
if (!Number.isInteger(length) || length < 0 || length > 10_000) {
throw new RangeError("length must be an integer from 0 to 10000");
}
return new Array(length);
}
The upper bound in this example is an application choice, not a JavaScript-wide limit. Choose a bound that fits the task and your resource budget.
Distinguish length from a single array element
new Array(value) treats a single numeric argument as the array length. If you mean to create an array containing that value, use an array literal: [value]. For example, new Array(3) creates an array with length 3, while [3] contains the number 3 as its first element.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Also check assignments such as items.length = value and growth through operations such as push or concat. An invalid requested size can originate well before the line that finally triggers the error.
Do not assume ArrayBuffer has the same limit
ArrayBuffer allocation limits vary by engine and platform. MDN reports platform-specific limits, including 231−1 on 32-bit systems and 233 on 64-bit systems beginning with Firefox 89. These implementation details are not portable guarantees; avoid allocating based on a limit observed in another runtime.

Fix “RangeError: precision is out of range”
Check the digits argument passed to toFixed(), toExponential(), or toPrecision(). The accepted ranges differ slightly:
| Method | Accepted argument | Example |
|---|---|---|
toFixed(digits) |
Integer from 0 to 100 inclusive | (12.345).toFixed(2) |
toExponential(digits) |
Integer from 0 to 100 inclusive | (12.345).toExponential(2) |
toPrecision(precision) |
Integer from 1 to 100 inclusive | (12.345).toPrecision(4) |
If the argument comes from input or a calculation, decide explicitly what the application should do when it is invalid. Do not silently clamp it unless that behavior is correct for your use case.

function formatAmount(value, digits) {
if (!Number.isInteger(digits) || digits < 0 || digits > 100) {
throw new RangeError("digits must be an integer from 0 to 100");
}
return value.toFixed(digits);
}
If you use toPrecision(), validate against its own lower bound of 1 rather than reusing the toFixed() rule.
Fix “RangeError: radix must be an integer”
The optional radix supplied to Number.prototype.toString() or BigInt.prototype.toString() must be an integer from 2 through 36. Validate a computed or user-selected radix before converting:

- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.

function toRadixString(value, radix) {
if (!Number.isInteger(radix) || radix < 2 || radix > 36) {
throw new RangeError("radix must be an integer from 2 to 36");
}
return value.toString(radix);
}
Use the default conversion when you do not need a particular radix; do not pass a value that may be fractional or outside the accepted interval.
Fix “Maximum call stack size exceeded” or “too much recursion”
These messages can indicate recursion that does not terminate or does not make progress toward a stopping condition. Chrome and Safari can report a RangeError; Firefox can report InternalError: too much recursion for this condition.
- Look for repeated function frames in the stack trace.
- Check that every recursive path can reach a base case.
- Confirm that each recursive call moves closer to that base case—for example, by processing a smaller part of the input.
- For very deep input, consider an iterative implementation or impose an appropriate input bound.
There is no portable recursion-depth number to target: the limit depends on the runtime, so a threshold copied from another browser is not a reliable fix.
Troubleshoot other RangeError messages
The cases above are common examples, not an exhaustive catalog. If the message points to a different built-in operation, look up that operation’s accepted values in its reference documentation and check the exact value supplied at the call site. Do not apply array, precision, or radix limits to an unrelated API.

- The value looks valid when logged: check its type, conversion, and value at the moment of the call. A nearby calculation or coercion may change it.
- The error occurs only for large input: examine allocation size or recursion depth, and set an application-appropriate bound or use an approach that handles the input incrementally.
- The error differs between browsers: use the operation and stack frames to diagnose it; error class and wording can vary by engine.
