Test intelligence finds useful patterns by collecting test results over time and comparing them across builds, tests, code changes, platforms, devices, and requirements. That history can show which failures recur, when a regression may have begun, whether a test behaves inconsistently, and where testing evidence is missing. A pattern is a lead for investigation—not proof of a root cause.

What test intelligence analyzes

Test intelligence combines test outcomes with context that helps explain them. Depending on the test system and integrations, that context can include the test’s identity, build or release, time, code change, browser or device, execution environment, requirement, and failure details. Dashboards, grouped results, trend charts, histories, and drill-down views make it easier to examine those results from different angles.

The useful unit is not an isolated pass or failure but a comparable series of published outcomes. Microsoft describes Azure Pipelines Test Analytics as drawing on published test results accumulated over time. Without that history, a dashboard cannot establish whether a result is recurring or when a trend began. Microsoft Learn: Test Analytics – Azure Pipelines

How to find a pattern in test results

  1. Accumulate comparable results. Publish results consistently and preserve stable test identities plus useful run context. If test names or identifiers change frequently, histories may be harder to interpret.
  2. Look for concentration and change. Review pass rates, failure totals, the most frequently failing tests, and trends over days or builds. A shift in the trend can help narrow down when an issue appeared; it does not establish what caused it.
  3. Group and compare. Group failures by test file or another useful dimension, then compare the same tests across builds, platforms, or devices. A failure concentrated on one configuration suggests a different investigation from one appearing across all configurations.
  4. Drill into the history. Open individual test outcomes and inspect their run context, logs, traces, and related changes. A summary chart can point to an area of interest, but diagnosis depends on the underlying evidence.
  5. Connect results to intended coverage. Where the system links tests to requirements or code changes, inspect whether important requirements or changes lack associated test evidence. Treat a coverage indicator as a measure of recorded coverage, not a guarantee of software quality.
  6. Test the leading explanation. Reproduce the failure or compare the relevant configurations, then record what the evidence supports. Correlation between a change and a failure is a reason to investigate, not proof that the change caused it.

Is a failure a regression or a flaky test?

A regression is a real change in behavior, while a flaky test can pass and fail under effectively the same code and conditions. One failed run cannot reliably distinguish them. Compare the test’s outcomes across repeated executions and builds, then check whether the execution context changed.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Evidence consistent with a regression: the test was passing and begins failing after a particular build or change, with the failure reproducible under the relevant conditions.
  • Evidence consistent with flakiness: the same test alternates between passing and failing without a corresponding code or configuration change, or its outcomes vary across repeated runs.
  • Evidence still needed: logs, traces, environment details, relevant code changes, and a reproduction attempt. An intermittent pattern can also arise from changing external services or test environments, so do not classify it from the chart alone.

Microsoft notes that tests can exhibit nondeterministic behavior, often called flaky tests, and that observing execution trends over time can help reveal patterns. A 2022 survey of 335 professional developers and testers reported concerns about flaky tests and loss of trust in results; the sample describes survey respondents, not the prevalence of flakiness across all teams. A Survey on How Test Flakiness Affects Developers and What Support They Need To Address It

Which tests keep failing across builds?

Start with a ranked failure summary or a trend view, then open the history for the tests that recur. Separate frequent failures from high-impact failures: a rarely failing test may protect a critical workflow, while a noisy, low-value test may be consuming investigation time. If available, group by test file, suite, component, or owner to determine whether failures cluster around a part of the product or test system.

For each recurring test, compare its failing and passing runs. Check whether the same failure signature appears, whether the test is failing on every run or intermittently, and whether the environment or configuration differs. A cluster of similar failures may help prioritize investigation, but shared symptoms do not prove a shared cause.

Did failures begin after a particular change?

Use the history to locate the first failing build or time window, then compare changes and test outcomes around that point. If failures begin after a specific change and reproduce when that change is present, the change becomes a stronger candidate for investigation. It is still possible that an environment update, dependency, test-data change, or unrelated defect coincided with it.

Keep the comparison narrow enough to be useful: inspect the affected test, nearby builds, and the changes that differ between the last passing and first failing results. Then validate the suspected cause through reproduction, logs, traces, or a controlled comparison rather than treating timing alone as confirmation.

Does the failure happen only on one browser or device?

Compare results for the same tests across browsers, operating systems, device profiles, or other configurations that the test system records. A failure limited to one configuration can point toward a compatibility issue or a difference in that environment; a failure across configurations suggests a broader issue may be involved. Neither pattern alone identifies the cause.

Which requirements or changes lack test evidence?

When test results are connected to requirements, defects, or code changes, traceability views can reveal requirements without linked tests or changes without corresponding test evidence. This is useful for finding a gap in what has been exercised or recorded; it does not prove that a requirement is defective or that the rest of the product is adequately tested.

What test intelligence can—and cannot—tell you

Analytics helps direct attention: it can make repeated failures, timing changes, configuration-specific results, and possible coverage gaps easier to see. It cannot turn a correlation into causation or substitute for checking the run evidence. A reliable investigation moves from a visible pattern to a testable explanation.

Some vendors describe AI capabilities such as failure clustering, flaky-test detection, root-cause analysis, or forecasting. TestMu AI, for example, describes these capabilities on its product page. Treat generated groupings or explanations as suggestions to verify against logs, traces, code changes, and reproduction—not as independently established accuracy guarantees. Choosing an analysis view or tool

Choose based on the investigation you need to perform, rather than the label on the dashboard. Check whether the tool has the dimensions and filters you need, how much history and run context it retains, whether you can drill into underlying results, and whether it connects to your CI results and issue or requirement systems. If it offers AI-generated classifications, confirm that you can inspect the evidence behind them. The cited product documentation describes capabilities, not an independent comparison of accuracy or an objectively best vendor.

Capturing visual evidence for UI test investigations

A screenshot can help document what a UI test displayed when it failed, but a screenshot API is not a replacement for test analytics: it captures a page, while analytics organizes test outcomes and their history. For a page-state capture, ScreenshotNeo is a complementary option; it can return an image or PDF from one GET request and also offers an MCP server for AI agents.

Or skip the browser setup

Send a URL to the ScreenshotNeo API to save a screenshot; see the API documentation for parameters and response details.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides the tools take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a test analytics dashboard find the root cause automatically?

A dashboard can surface trends or clusters that narrow the investigation, but the cause still needs validation against run evidence and reproduction.

Can test intelligence work if test results are not published consistently?

It needs comparable accumulated results to establish histories and trends; inconsistent publication or changing test identities can make comparisons less useful.
