For a modern project, write a standard, unprefixed linear-gradient() and check the exact syntax against the browser versions your project supports. Basic gradients are widely available, but that does not guarantee support for every newer gradient feature. Add vendor-prefixed declarations only when your support policy calls for them.
Write a standard linear gradient
A CSS linear gradient is an image generated from at least two color stops. Use it in an image-valued property such as background or background-image:

background: linear-gradient(to right, #17324d, #68b5a7);
}The first and second colors are the minimum stops needed to define a transition. Add a direction and more stops when you need control over the gradient:
.banner {
background: linear-gradient(135deg, #17324d 0%, #376f82 55%, #68b5a7 100%);
}A gradient is an <image>, not a color value. It works with background and background-image, but not background-color. It has no intrinsic dimensions; its rendered size follows the element it paints.

Choose a direction that matches the design
If you omit the direction, the gradient runs from top to bottom. You can specify a side or corner with to, or use an angle:
to rightruns left to right.to bottom rightruns toward the lower-right corner.135degspecifies an angle. In CSS gradient angles,0degruns bottom to top and90degruns left to right.
For example, these declarations express the same left-to-right direction:

}Check support against your browser policy
CSS gradients are broadly available across browsers; MDN describes the <gradient> type as widely available since July 2015. That broad statement is not a guarantee for every syntax component. Newer features, including color-interpolation choices, can have different support.
Start with the minimum browser versions your project promises to support, then check the particular gradient syntax you plan to use against current compatibility data. There is no single browser-version floor that is right for every project, and a claim about basic linear-gradient() support should not be extended automatically to newer options.

Use vendor prefixes only for a defined legacy need
For ordinary modern projects, keep the standard unprefixed declaration. Prefixes reflect older experimental or non-standard browser implementations, not a universal checklist to paste into every stylesheet. MDN’s CSS FAQ discourages routine use of prefixed properties in production; its fallback guidance, when a prefix is required, is to put the prefixed declaration before the standard declaration.
Historical Safari syntax illustrates why the exact legacy target matters: earlier Safari versions used -webkit-gradient(), while support for -webkit-linear-gradient() arrived in Safari 5.1 and iOS 5.0. Those historical details explain old code; they are not a recommendation to support those releases. MDN specifically advises using linear-gradient() instead of -moz-linear-gradient.

If your support policy really includes a browser that requires a legacy form, verify that browser and syntax, then test the rendered result there. Avoid adding prefixes speculatively: they increase stylesheet complexity and may preserve syntax your actual audience no longer needs.

Autoprefixer adds prefixes; it is not a polyfill. It also cannot reliably derive other forms from source containing only the legacy -webkit-gradient() syntax, because it lacks the unprefixed source declaration it needs. If a build is expected to generate prefixes, write the standard declaration in source.
Debug a gradient that does not appear
- Check the property. A gradient is an image, so use
backgroundorbackground-image, notbackground-color. - Check the stops. A linear gradient needs at least two color stops. Confirm that the declaration has both colors and valid punctuation.
- Check the element’s size. The gradient paints the element; an element with no visible dimensions may make a valid gradient appear absent.
- Check the browser floor and exact syntax. Basic gradient support does not establish support for newer syntax such as a particular color-interpolation choice. Test the feature against the versions in your support policy.
- Check generated CSS. Confirm that the build uses the intended Browserslist targets and that the standard declaration is present in source. Autoprefixer is not a polyfill and cannot recover standard syntax from a legacy-only declaration.
- Check legacy prefix order. If a prefix is genuinely required, place that declaration before the standard declaration so the standard form remains available to browsers that understand it.
