TDD and BDD solve related but different problems. Test-driven development (TDD) is a short, test-first coding loop: write a test for the next behavior, implement until it passes, then refactor. Behavior-driven development (BDD) starts with people agreeing on concrete examples of what a change should do, then uses those examples to guide implementation and, where useful, automated checks. Use TDD to guide code-level feedback and design; use BDD when the team needs shared understanding of expected behavior. They work well together.
What is the difference between TDD and BDD?
| Question | TDD | BDD |
|---|---|---|
| What does it address first? | Whether the next small piece of code behaves as intended. | Whether the team agrees what the system should do in a concrete situation. |
| Where does it start? | A developer identifies a test case for the next functionality. | Relevant participants discuss examples around a desired change or user story. |
| Typical scope | A function, object, component, or other focused behavior. | A user-visible or business-facing scenario, though the style can be used at other scales. |
| Who is it for? | Usually developers seeking rapid feedback while implementing. | Developers and stakeholders who need a shared understanding of expected behavior. |
| Core loop | Test, implement, refactor. | Discover examples, formulate them, automate and implement incrementally. |
| Common expression | Tests in the team’s usual unit or component-test framework. | Concrete examples; some teams express them in Gherkin and execute them with Cucumber. |
| Common mistake | Stopping when tests pass and skipping refactoring, or testing implementation details instead of observable behavior. | Treating Gherkin or a test tool as the practice, without the collaboration and discovery. |
These are tendencies, not hard boundaries. TDD can test observable behavior, and Given-When-Then can structure tests outside a BDD process. Martin Fowler notes that test-first development can be used with different kinds of tests, while Cucumber’s comparison describes the broad distinction between focused functionality and end-user behavior (Fowler on Given-When-Then; Cucumber’s BDD and TDD comparison).
How TDD works
TDD is more than having a test suite. Its familiar shorthand is Red-Green-Refactor:
- Red: write a test for one small piece of behavior and confirm it fails for the intended reason.
- Green: write the smallest implementation that makes the test pass.
- Refactor: improve the new and existing code while keeping the tests passing.
The test-first step makes a developer consider how behavior will be observed and how the code will be called before settling on an implementation. The refactoring step is essential: tests that pass do not by themselves keep code understandable. As Fowler puts it, “The most common way that I hear to screw up TDD is neglecting the third step” (Martin Fowler, “Test Driven Development,” revised 11 December 2023).

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use focused tests for meaningful behavior rather than adding a test for every trivial method or internal detail. Tests coupled too tightly to implementation can make harmless changes expensive; Fowler’s practical test-pyramid guidance recommends tests that observe behavior and remain readable (The Practical Test Pyramid). TDD can support design and feedback, but it does not guarantee good architecture or a particular level of quality.
How BDD works
BDD is a collaborative way of developing software, not a test syntax or runner. Cucumber’s project guidance describes three connected practices:

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Discovery: discuss concrete, real-world examples of a small upcoming change and agree what is expected.
- Formulation: record useful examples in a structured form that people can read and automation can use.
- Automation: connect examples to the system as checks and implement the behavior incrementally.
The conversation is central. Examples can expose ambiguity—such as eligibility, expiry, or rounding—before the team commits to an interpretation. Writing feature files after implementation, without shared discovery, may produce automated tests but misses an important part of BDD. Cucumber’s own guide cautions, “There’s much more to BDD than just using Cucumber” (Cucumber, “Behaviour-Driven Development”).
Example: a discount code
Suppose a team is adding discount codes to a shopping cart. A BDD discussion might produce an example like this:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRank #3

Feature: Apply a discount code
Scenario: A valid code reduces the displayed total
Given a shopper has eligible items in their cart
And the code SAVE10 is valid for those items
When the shopper applies SAVE10
Then the displayed total reflects the discount
This is illustrative, not a claim that the example was run. The team still needs to decide what “eligible” means, how rounding works, whether codes expire, and whether discounts can be stacked. Those are product rules to discover, not assumptions supplied by the scenario.
Once the rule is clear, TDD can guide the smaller implementation steps: write a focused test for the discount on an eligible subtotal, then tests for an ineligible item or expired code; implement each behavior and refactor with the tests green. The BDD example establishes the user-visible expectation, while the smaller tests provide coding feedback. These practices do not require duplicating every implementation-level test as a business-facing scenario.

Gherkin, Cucumber, and Given-When-Then are not the same thing as BDD
- BDD is the collaborative process of discovering and agreeing on behavior through examples.
- Gherkin is a grammar for structuring examples as readable text, often using Given, When, and Then.
- Cucumber is a tool that reads executable specifications and runs the scenarios; step definitions connect scenario steps to code.
Cucumber feature files are typically kept alongside source code, and the runner reports whether scenarios pass or fail (Cucumber documentation, “Introduction,” updated 29 September 2026). Given-When-Then describes the initial state, the behavior under discussion, and the expected outcome. It can be used without Cucumber and outside a full BDD process (Fowler on Given-When-Then). A team can practice BDD with other formats and tools; adopting a syntax alone does not create stakeholder collaboration.

Start with BDD discovery when the requirement is ambiguous
Use BDD discovery when product, testing, and engineering participants may interpret a requirement differently, acceptance criteria are vague, or edge cases could change what “done” means. Begin with discussion and examples—not by installing Cucumber or turning every story directly into automation.
Combine them when you need agreement and implementation feedback
Use a small set of valuable BDD scenarios to clarify user-visible outcomes, then use TDD tests for focused component behavior and implementation. Keep each test at the level where it is useful; duplicating every low-level check in a stakeholder-facing feature file adds maintenance without necessarily improving shared understanding. If a team already uses TDD, it can try BDD discovery on one feature and judge whether the conversations clarify acceptance behavior. Cucumber describes the two approaches as compatible rather than mutually exclusive (Cucumber’s BDD and TDD comparison).
Common failure modes and how to avoid them
- TDD becomes “write tests sometime.” Keep the test-first sequence and the refactoring step; otherwise the feedback and design loop is lost.
- Tests assert private implementation details. Prefer observable behavior so internal refactors do not break tests unnecessarily.
- BDD becomes “write Given-When-Then files.” Involve the people who understand the desired behavior in discovery, and formulate examples that resolve real questions.
- Every scenario is automated at the highest level. Automate scenarios that provide valuable behavior checks; use focused tests for lower-level rules rather than copying every check into feature files.
- The method is sold as a guaranteed productivity or quality increase. These practices structure feedback and shared understanding, but neither guarantees fewer defects, faster delivery, or a particular return on investment.
