There is no single best API testing tool for every team. For interactive request exploration and shared API workflows, consider Postman; for repository-native, plain-text collections, consider Bruno; for combined API and UI/mobile automation, consider Katalon Studio; and for API checks written alongside application tests, consider Playwright. Use Grafana k6 when the central need is load testing, and include SoapUI in a SOAP-focused evaluation. These tools serve different jobs, so choose by protocol, authoring style, collaboration, automation needs, and cost—not by a universal ranking.

Choose a tool by the API testing job

“API testing” can mean sending requests while developing, repeating functional checks after a code change, checking schemas, or measuring behavior under load. A tool that suits one job may not be a good substitute for another. Start with the kind of test you need to run most often, then check whether the product supports the protocols and working style your team actually uses.

  • Exploratory requests: Favor a visual API client if developers need to send requests and inspect responses interactively.
  • Regression checks: Favor a workflow your team can run repeatedly and maintain alongside its code or API collections.
  • Schema or contract checks: Confirm that the product supports the specific schema-validation workflow you need; do not assume that every request client provides it.
  • Load and performance: Choose a load-testing tool rather than treating ordinary functional request checks as a substitute.
  • Multiple protocols or test types: Verify the exact protocol list and how the product handles those tests before committing.

For each candidate, compare protocol and authentication coverage, manual versus scripted authoring, collection or specification import, schema validation, local or Git-based storage, team collaboration, CI execution and reporting, specialist testing needs, and plan limits. The product descriptions below establish selected capabilities, not a hands-on performance ranking.

Best API testing tools by use case

Tool Consider it for What the available product information says Important qualification
Postman Broad API workbench and shared team workflows In a January 31, 2026 announcement, Postman described API Catalog, Git workflows, CI CLI integration, mock servers, and additional API and messaging protocol support. It announced Free, Solo, Team, and Enterprise plans to be selectable starting March 1, 2026. The announcement is not a current confirmation of feature availability, plan limits, or prices. Check Postman’s live documentation and pricing before choosing a team plan; the announcement reviewed here does not state prices or limits.
Bruno Developers who want request collections kept with a repository Bruno describes itself as an open-source local client and says its collections are plain-text files stored in the repository and work with Git. This is Bruno’s product positioning. Local, repository-based storage may suit a team’s workflow, but it is not by itself proof of a security property or a fit for every collaboration model.
Katalon Studio Teams considering API tests alongside UI and mobile automation Katalon’s product page, accessed October 3, 2026, describes REST, SOAP, SOAP 1.2, and GraphQL support; schema validation; imports from Swagger, Postman, and WSDL; and CI/CD support. These are vendor-stated capabilities, not an independent comparison or benchmark. Validate the specific imports and combined automation workflow you need.
Playwright Developers embedding API checks in code-based tests Playwright’s official documentation identifies API testing support within its code-based testing framework. Consider it for tests maintained in code; the available information does not establish it as a full visual API-client replacement.
SoapUI API testing evaluations that include SOAP SoapUI’s official product page presents it as API testing software; a comparison result also identifies SoapUI/ReadyAPI as relevant to SOAP-oriented evaluations. Check the current SoapUI and ReadyAPI product split and the precise features available in the edition you plan to use before relying on granular comparisons.
Grafana k6 Developer-oriented load and performance testing Grafana identifies k6 OSS as an open-source load-testing tool for developers. It is a specialist performance-testing option, not a like-for-like replacement for a visual client used to explore requests.

How to decide between the leading options

Choose Postman when shared API work is central

Postman’s January 31, 2026 announcement described a broad workbench direction: API Catalog, Git workflows, mock servers, CLI integration, and support for additional protocols including GraphQL, gRPC, WebSocket, Socket.IO, MQTT, and MCP. It also announced Free, Solo, Team, and Enterprise plan names with selection beginning March 1, 2026. Treat those details as an announcement, not proof that a particular feature or plan limit is currently available. Before adopting it, verify the current protocol support, CI workflow, team requirements, and live plan terms.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Choose Bruno when collections in Git are the priority

Bruno’s stated model keeps plain-text collections in a repository and supports Git workflows. That can be a natural fit when developers want request definitions reviewed and maintained alongside other project files. Decide whether that local, repository-centered model also meets your team’s collaboration and governance needs; the vendor description alone does not establish those requirements.

Choose Katalon when API checks need to sit beside UI or mobile automation

Katalon’s product information describes REST, SOAP, SOAP 1.2, and GraphQL testing, schema validation, imports from Swagger, Postman, and WSDL, and CI/CD support. Its page also says, as a vendor-reported figure, that “Over 30K teams test and launch software faster with Katalon.” That is a company claim, not an independently verified adoption statistic. Evaluate the combined testing workflow and imports against your own project rather than treating the figure as evidence of comparative quality.

Choose Playwright for code-based API checks, not just for a GUI

Playwright documents API testing as part of its code-based testing framework. It is worth evaluating when the team wants API checks maintained as tests in code. The available product information does not establish it as a visual request client, so assess it against that specific need rather than assuming the tools are interchangeable.

Keep SOAP and load testing in their proper categories

Include SoapUI in a SOAP-oriented evaluation, but verify the current product and edition details before comparing specific capabilities. For load and performance work, Grafana k6 is a more directly matched candidate: Grafana positions k6 OSS as an open-source load-testing tool for developers. Functional API checks and load tests answer different questions, so a team may need both kinds of tooling.

Check plans, team needs, and changing features before you commit

Pricing and plan limits can change, and a named plan does not tell you which limits apply to your team. Postman’s January 31, 2026 announcement named Free, Solo, Team, and Enterprise plans and said they would become selectable starting March 1, 2026, but did not give prices or limits. Confirm current terms directly before comparing paid plans. The reviewed product information also does not establish comparable prices or limits for the other tools in this article.

  • Review current plan caps, seats, and governance requirements before moving a team workflow into a paid tier.

A separate tool for website screenshot capture

ScreenshotNeo is not an API testing runner and should not replace the tools above for validating API responses, schemas, or load. If your development work also needs website screenshots through an API, it is the alternative to try first for that separate task: ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, with a one-GET-request interface for returning a screenshot or PDF. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. See ScreenshotNeo for that workflow. Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
