What you need before writing a Selenium test
Selenium WebDriver is a language-neutral API and protocol for controlling browsers. To write a script, choose a Selenium binding for a language your project uses, install it, and have the target browser available. Selenium’s getting-started guide, last modified September 16, 2026, describes a standard setup in which Selenium Manager handles routine browser and driver management; most current local scripts do not need custom driver-management code. Pinned browser versions, containers, restricted environments, and remote runs can require extra setup. See the Selenium getting-started guide and Selenium Manager documentation.
Choose the binding and execution environment
Use the language already used by your team when possible. Syntax, installation commands, and test-runner integration differ by binding, so follow the current documentation for your selected language. Run locally while developing; consider Selenium Grid if you need distributed or parallel execution across machines. Selenium supports major browsers through WebDriver, but the browser and environment you target determine the configuration you need. The WebDriver overview describes the browser-control model.
The basic Selenium test workflow
The first script should prove an end-to-end behavior, not merely launch a browser. A useful sequence is: create a session, navigate, wait for the relevant control, locate it, interact, verify the resulting state, and quit the session. Selenium’s official example uses a sample web form: enter text, submit it, and verify the response. See Write your first Selenium script.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Start: create a WebDriver session for the browser under test.
- Navigate: open the application page with the driver’s navigation method.
- Wait: wait for the element or state required for the next action.
- Locate and act: find a specific element, then type, click, or otherwise interact with it.
- Verify: assert that the expected text, URL, or application state is present.
- Clean up: quit the driver, including when an assertion fails.
Locate elements with stable selectors
A locator identifies an element in the page’s DOM. Selenium provides strategies including ID, name, class name, CSS selector, link text, partial link text, tag name, and XPath. Prefer an ID when it is unique and predictably maintained. A name or CSS selector can also be a good choice when it targets stable application markup. Avoid broad selectors or selectors tied to incidental nesting that may change during a redesign. Consult Selenium’s locator documentation.
- Ask whether the locator identifies the intended control uniquely.
- Prefer readable selectors that communicate which control the test needs.
- Use XPath when it expresses a relationship or condition that other available selectors do not express clearly, rather than as the default for every element.
- If a locator matches multiple elements, make it more specific instead of relying on whichever match Selenium returns.
Wait for the condition the next action needs
A completed navigation does not guarantee that a JavaScript-driven application has rendered or enabled the element your script needs. Wait for a meaningful condition, such as an element becoming visible or a confirmation appearing after submission. Selenium’s explicit waits let a test describe that condition at the point it matters; see the waiting strategies guide.

Use explicit waits for dynamic behavior
An explicit wait is tied to a condition and a timeout. It makes the script’s readiness requirement visible and gives a useful timeout failure if the condition never becomes true. Choose the condition that matches the next step: presence if the element must exist, visibility if it must be seen, or a state change if the test is checking a response to an action.
Do not mix implicit and explicit waits
The implicit wait defaults to zero and applies globally to element lookups. Selenium warns that combining implicit and explicit waits can produce unpredictable timeout durations. Keep the strategy consistent; for dynamic pages, condition-specific explicit waits are generally easier to reason about. Fixed sleeps can be useful for deliberate debugging but are a poor primary synchronization strategy because they either waste time or still fail when the page takes longer.

Turn a browser script into a test
A script becomes a useful automated test when it checks a meaningful expected result and reports failure clearly. Put browser creation in setup, use assertions for expected behavior, and put cleanup in teardown or a finally-style path. That way, a failed assertion does not unnecessarily leave a browser session running. Selenium’s test organization guidance covers frameworks and lifecycle setup.
Keep tests isolated as the suite grows
Keep locators and repeated actions understandable, and avoid sharing mutable browser state between unrelated tests. Add cross-browser or distributed runs when the project needs them, rather than complicating the first local test. Selenium Grid is the Selenium option for distributing execution across machines; see the Grid documentation.

If you need a screenshot rather than an interactive test, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Cookie banners are accepted and removed along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools.
