Looping alone usually is not what drives FFmpeg to 100% CPU. The heavier work is often decoding, filtering or scaling frames, and encoding them again—especially when the command uses an encoder such as libx264. -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; it does not say whether FFmpeg copies compressed streams or processes every frame. Inspect the full command and measure the actual workload before changing your Vultr instance.

What makes a looping FFmpeg command CPU-intensive?

FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option means to loop an input indefinitely. The expensive work, if any, depends on what happens to the streams between input and output. FFmpeg’s documentation distinguishes stream copy from transcoding: copied streams avoid decoding, filtering, and encoding, while an encoder or filter requires processing. See the FFmpeg documentation for the options supported by the installed build.

Stream copy versus re-encoding

A command that uses -c:v libx264 encodes video with x264; if the input is already compressed, FFmpeg must decode and encode frames rather than simply repeat the compressed video packets. Encoding can be demanding, and adding scaling, frame-rate conversion, overlays, or other filters increases the work. Audio can also be encoded or filtered independently.

By contrast, -c copy asks FFmpeg to copy streams without re-encoding them. It can reduce CPU use substantially when the destination accepts the source codecs and stream parameters. It is not suitable if you need a different codec, resolution, frame rate, overlay, or other transformation, and the destination container or protocol must support the copied streams.

What -re does—and does not do

For file input, -re reads at the file’s native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1). It is useful when a file must be paced in real time for a live output. It limits how quickly FFmpeg reads the file; it does not turn an encode into stream copy or make a costly encoding pipeline cheap.

Inspect the command and measure the right workload

  1. Capture the complete command. Check each input and output, including options placed before each input. Identify -c:v libx264 or another encoder, -vf or -filter_complex, scaling and frame-rate conversion, and whether audio is copied, encoded, or filtered.
  2. Count concurrent work. Check how many FFmpeg processes and streams are running at once. Six individually moderate jobs can collectively saturate a small instance; the number of jobs alone does not establish how much CPU any particular Vultr instance should use.
  3. Compare process and instance metrics. Observe FFmpeg’s CPU use and Vultr’s instance-level CPU metric over the same period. Confirm the allocated vCPU count and check whether usage is sustained or a brief spike. Vultr documents CPU monitoring for Compute Cloud in its monitoring documentation; that metric helps describe instance load but does not, by itself, identify its cause or prove provider-side contention.
  4. Try stream copy only when compatible. If the output can accept the input’s streams unchanged, test copying rather than encoding. Then verify that the output plays correctly and that the destination accepts the codec and parameters.
  5. Change one processing variable at a time if encoding is required. Test output resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, or the number of simultaneous jobs, and compare CPU use with output quality. Do not assume a particular preset or larger instance will guarantee a specific CPU ceiling.

Choose a fix that preserves the output you need

Approach When it fits Trade-off or check
Copy streams with -c copy The destination accepts the original codecs and parameters, and you do not need frame-level changes. No re-encoding or filters for copied streams, but no new resolution, frame rate, or overlay either. Confirm the destination supports the streams.
Keep software encoding and reduce work The destination requires a different encoding or you need filters or other transformations. Test resolution, frame rate, preset, and concurrent job count individually. Check both CPU and visual output; no setting is a universal guarantee.
Limit threads as a measured test Measurements suggest thread use is contributing to resource pressure or competing jobs need a different allocation. FFmpeg’s filter-pipeline thread control defaults based on available CPUs. A 2021 community discussion suggested reducing thread counts in one multi-stream case, not as a universal prescription. More thread limits can also affect throughput.
Use a supported hardware encoder The instance exposes a suitable accelerator and the installed FFmpeg build supports the required codec and device. Verify both before changing the command. Hardware acceleration is not automatically faster: some paths require GPU-to-system-memory copies and may perform worse than software decoding on modern CPUs.

Check options against your installed FFmpeg build; the project’s online documentation is regenerated nightly, so a current web page may not exactly match an older binary.

Troubleshoot by what changes after a test

CPU falls when you use stream copy

That points to re-encoding as a likely major contributor. Confirm the output is valid and accepted by the destination, and check that copying has not removed a transformation the stream needs.

CPU stays high with stream copy

Do not assume the loop itself is the explanation. Check for multiple FFmpeg processes, audio encoding or filtering, remaining filters, muxing and network behavior, and other processes on the instance. The available evidence does not establish one alternative cause for every high-CPU copy workload.

The stream must be re-encoded

Test one variable at a time: resolution, frame rate, encoder preset, number of concurrent jobs, or a verified hardware-encoder path. Record CPU use and inspect the resulting stream after each change. If you need the original output quality and transformations, lower CPU use may require accepting a trade-off or allocating more compute; no particular Vultr size is established as the right choice without the command and measurements.

CPU spikes when the stream starts or reconnects

Compare the full time series with process-level usage and the number of jobs active at that moment. A short spike and sustained saturation are different symptoms; the instance metric alone does not show which FFmpeg stage caused either one.

What a community example can—and cannot—tell you

In a 2021 FFmpeg-user mailing-list post, LianCheng reported that six looping FFmpeg processes handling full-HD files with libx264 reached 100% CPU. That is one person’s setup, not a controlled benchmark or a prediction for your Vultr instance. Dennis Mungai’s reply in that thread on November 12, 2021, discussed thread counts for that situation; it does not establish a general tuning rule. See the mailing-list thread.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep prerecorded video looping as a YouTube live stream, rather than tune and maintain an FFmpeg process on Vultr, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers; it also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera.
