An implicit wait applies a timeout to element lookups throughout a WebDriver session; an explicit wait polls for a particular condition at a particular point in a test. For dynamic pages, explicit waits are usually the clearer choice. Selenium warns against combining the two because their timing can become unpredictable.

Implicit and explicit waits: the difference

Aspect Implicit wait Explicit wait
Scope Session-wide setting affecting element-location calls Local to a specific wait invocation
What it waits for A requested element to be found during lookup A chosen condition, such as visibility or text, to become true
How it behaves Retries the lookup until it succeeds or the timeout expires Polls the condition until it succeeds or the timeout expires
Typical use A deliberate global lookup policy, used sparingly Dynamic UI state and readiness for the next action
Main risk Can add delay across many lookups and slow tests A poorly chosen condition or timeout can still result in failure

The default implicit wait is zero. Without setting one, a lookup for a missing element fails immediately. An implicit wait does not wait for an element to become visible or clickable after Selenium has found it. Selenium describes an implicit wait as “rarely the best solution” in its first-script tutorial.

When to use an explicit wait

Use an explicit wait when the next test action depends on a particular browser state: a button becoming clickable, text appearing, a spinner disappearing, or an element becoming visible. Waiting for that condition is more robust than guessing how long a fixed sleep should last. Selenium’s Expected Conditions reference lists condition types including existence, visibility, staleness, visible text, and title values. Exact names and availability depend on the language binding and version.

Python example

This Selenium Python example waits up to 10 seconds for a button with the ID submit to become clickable, then clicks it:

from selenium.webdriver.common.by import By
from selenium.webdriver.support import expected_conditions as EC
from selenium.webdriver.support.wait import WebDriverWait

wait = WebDriverWait(driver, timeout=10)
button = wait.until(EC.element_to_be_clickable((By.ID, "submit")))
button.click()

The timeout is a maximum for the condition check, not a command to pause for the full duration: the wait can proceed as soon as the condition succeeds. In Python, WebDriverWait defaults to polling every 0.5 seconds and ignoring NoSuchElementException; those are Python API defaults, not universal defaults for every Selenium binding. See the Python WebDriverWait API for details.

When an implicit wait may make sense

An implicit wait may suit a team that intentionally wants every element lookup to tolerate a short period while an element appears. Set it only with a clear understanding that it affects location calls session-wide; it does not establish that an element is ready for interaction. In Java, Selenium documents this syntax:

driver.manage().timeouts().implicitlyWait(Duration.ofSeconds(2));

Selenium’s Java API cautions that increasing the timeout can adversely affect test run time, particularly with slower location strategies such as XPath. See WebDriver.Timeouts.

Why Selenium says not to mix them

Selenium’s waiting-strategies guide says: “Warning: Do not mix implicit and explicit waits. Doing so can cause unpredictable wait times.” An implicit wait can affect element lookups made while an explicit condition is being polled, so the explicit timeout should not be treated as a hard upper bound when both settings are active.

Selenium illustrates the problem with a 10-second implicit wait and a 15-second explicit wait: the timeout can occur after 20 seconds. This is a documentation example, not a benchmark or guarantee that every driver and condition will behave identically. To avoid that ambiguity, leave the implicit wait at zero when using explicit waits.

Navigation completion is not interaction readiness

A navigation command waits for the page-load strategy’s configured readyState, which defaults to complete. That state concerns HTML-defined assets; it does not guarantee that JavaScript-driven updates have finished or that the specific control your test needs is ready. After navigation, wait explicitly for the state needed by the next action.

Troubleshooting Selenium wait problems

  • The element is found but the click fails: A lookup wait only covers finding the element. Use an explicit condition that represents the needed state, such as clickability, rather than assuming presence means readiness.
  • The explicit wait takes longer than its timeout: Check whether a nonzero implicit wait is active. Selenium warns that mixing wait types can make total timing unpredictable; use explicit waits with the implicit wait left at zero.
  • The test fails intermittently after navigation: Page-load completion does not prove that a JavaScript-driven transition has finished. Wait for the relevant element, text, or other condition.
  • The test is slow despite a small implicit timeout: The implicit timeout applies across element lookups. Repeated lookups, especially with slower strategies such as XPath, can increase total runtime.
  • An expected condition import or method is unavailable: Check the API for the language binding and Selenium version in use. Expected Conditions support is binding-specific; for example, Selenium says .NET stopped supporting Expected Conditions in Selenium 4.
  • A wait reaches its timeout without success: Confirm that the locator identifies the intended element, that the condition matches the state the page actually reaches, and that the timeout is appropriate. A wait cannot make a condition true if the page never reaches it.

Or skip the browser setup

If the task is to capture a page rather than run a Selenium interaction test, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. It is a different tool from Selenium waits: it captures a page, rather than synchronizing browser-test actions.

ScreenshotNeo API documentation

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Practical rule

For dynamic page states, use an explicit wait for the condition the next action requires. Keep the implicit wait at zero when doing so. Use a nonzero implicit wait only when a deliberate session-wide lookup policy is more useful than condition-specific synchronization, and verify the API details for your Selenium binding and version.
