To debug a live website in iPhone Safari, enable Web Inspector on the iPhone, connect it to a Mac, open the page on the phone, then use Safari on the Mac to inspect that page. Apple’s Web Inspector lets you examine HTML, CSS, JavaScript, network requests, storage, and performance activity. A Mac is required for this remote-inspection workflow; Responsive Design Mode is a useful first check, but it does not reproduce every iOS behavior.

Inspect a live iPhone Safari page from a Mac

  1. Enable inspection on the iPhone. Open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced and turn on Web Inspector. This is Apple’s current documented settings path; labels can vary across software releases. Apple’s iOS inspection instructions cover the setup.
  2. Connect the iPhone to the Mac. Use a cable compatible with both devices. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the Mac, approve the prompt. Apple says the connected device should then appear in Safari’s Develop menu.
  3. Open the page on the iPhone. Navigate to the problem page in Safari and reproduce the issue if needed.
  4. Select the page in Mac Safari. Open Safari’s Develop menu, choose the iPhone, then choose the open webpage. Safari opens a Web Inspector window for that page. The inspector follows the selected tab as it navigates; closing the iPhone tab closes its inspector window.
  5. Optional: switch to a network connection. First establish the wired connection. In Safari’s Develop menu, open the device submenu and enable Connect via Network. Apple also documents configuring network connection through Xcode.

If Safari on the Mac has no Develop menu, open Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable Show features for web developers. Apple says these features are off by default. See Apple’s instructions for enabling developer features.

Choose the right inspection method

Workflow Best for What it does not establish
Responsive Design Mode on Mac Quickly checking viewport width, height, and display pixel ratios while adjusting a page. It does not prove the page behaves exactly as it does on iPhone. Apple notes that iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS have rendering behavior different from macOS.
Remote Web Inspector with a real iPhone Inspecting the actual page open on the device, including its live DOM, scripts, requests, and other activity. It requires an iPhone, a Mac, and initial device setup and connection.
WebDriver automation Repeating browser interactions for regression checks and automated testing. It is a separate workflow from opening Web Inspector to diagnose a one-off issue, and requires test code and additional enablement.

Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation explains its viewport and pixel-ratio controls and the differences among platforms. Use it to narrow down a layout issue, then verify iPhone-specific behavior on the real device when possible.

What to check in Web Inspector

Apple describes Web Inspector as a way to inspect and debug HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Start with the symptom you can reproduce, then use the panel that can show the relevant evidence.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  • Elements: Inspect the DOM and the styles applied to a selected element. This is a good starting point for missing elements, unexpected wrapping, and layout differences.
  • Console: Read logged errors, warnings, and other output; you can also run JavaScript interactively. Check here when an interaction fails or a script appears not to run.
  • Sources: Examine scripts and set breakpoints to follow execution when you need to locate where behavior changes.
  • Network: Review requests, responses, status, and timing to investigate missing assets, failed API calls, or slow loading.
  • Timelines: Examine activity involving network requests, layout and rendering, JavaScript events, memory, and CPU. This helps distinguish performance symptoms instead of relying on how the page looks.
  • Storage: Inspect site data such as cookies, databases, local storage, and session storage when behavior may depend on saved state.
  • Graphics: Examine canvas and CSS or JavaScript animations and transitions when an animation or rendering effect is the problem.

Apple documents these panels in its Web Inspector reference.

A practical debugging sequence

  1. Reproduce the failure on the iPhone and write down the exact action that triggers it.
  2. Check Console for errors or warnings that appear at the time of the failure.
  3. Check Network for requests that fail, return unexpected responses, or take unusually long relative to the working behavior you expect.
  4. Use Elements to inspect the affected node and styles; use Sources and breakpoints if the evidence points to script execution.
  5. If the page’s state may matter, inspect Storage and note whether relevant cookies or browser data are present.
  6. Change one thing at a time and repeat the same action, recording whether the result changes.

This sequence uses the functions Apple documents for Web Inspector; it is a practical way to narrow a problem, not a guarantee that any single panel will identify its cause.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Automate repeatable Safari checks with WebDriver

For repeatable iPhone or iPad Safari checks, Apple’s setup requires WebDriver enabled on the Mac and both Web Inspector and Remote Automation enabled in Safari’s Advanced settings on the device. Apple describes safaridriver as Safari’s WebDriver implementation and WebDriver as a REST API for automating web interactions. You can use compatible client libraries and languages to write tests; this is useful for repeatable interactions and regression checks, rather than interactive one-off diagnosis.

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced, then enable Web Inspector and Remote Automation.
  2. Enable WebDriver on the Mac as described in Apple’s iOS and iPadOS WebDriver setup.
  3. Write and run automation using a compatible WebDriver client. See Apple’s Safari WebDriver documentation for the model and safaridriver.

Or skip the browser setup

If you need a screenshot rather than interactive inspection, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return an image or PDF, and its options include full-page capture and device presets. It is not a replacement for Web Inspector when you need to step through JavaScript or examine a live iPhone tab.

Common setup problems

The iPhone does not appear in Safari’s Develop menu

  • Confirm Web Inspector is enabled in Settings > Apps > Safari > Advanced.
  • Connect the phone to the Mac and approve the Trust prompt if it appears.
  • Confirm Safari’s developer features are enabled on the Mac: Safari > Settings > Advanced > Show features for web developers.

The device appears, but the webpage is missing

Open the page in Safari on the iPhone, then reopen the device submenu in the Mac’s Develop menu and select that page. Apple’s workflow lists inspectable content by app; if the content is inside an app rather than a Safari tab, consult Apple’s Inspect Apps and Devices documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The inspector closes unexpectedly

Apple says the inspector window closes when its corresponding iPhone tab closes. Keep that tab open while inspecting and reopen the page from the Develop menu if the tab was closed.

Responsive preview looks right, but the iPhone still fails

Viewport and pixel-ratio previewing does not establish identical iOS rendering or interaction behavior. Reproduce the issue on the iPhone and inspect the actual page through Web Inspector.

Network connection does not work

Apple’s documented sequence is to establish the wired connection first and then enable Connect via Network from the device submenu in Safari’s Develop menu. Network connection can also be configured through Xcode.

Equipment and limits

Apple’s documented remote-inspection workflow requires an iPhone and a Mac. Cable connector requirements depend on the ports on both devices, so check your own hardware rather than assuming a particular cable type. Apple’s documentation does not establish a need for a specific MacBook model, paid debugging software, or a particular cable model. For connected-device listing and inspectable content by app, see Inspect Apps and Devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I debug an iPhone Safari page from a Windows PC?

Apple’s documented remote Web Inspector workflow uses Safari on a connected Mac; the instructions here do not establish a Windows-based equivalent.

Is Responsive Design Mode enough to confirm an iPhone bug is fixed?

No. It previews dimensions and pixel ratios on Mac, but Apple notes platform rendering differences; confirm iPhone-specific behavior on an actual device.
