What Selenium and nose2 each do
Selenium’s Python bindings let your code control a browser through WebDriver. nose2 is a test runner built on Python’s unittest; it discovers test modules, executes tests, and reports results. In a browser test, Selenium performs actions and reads page state while nose2 manages test discovery and execution. See the Selenium WebDriver documentation and nose2 documentation.
Install the packages and prepare a project
Use a virtual environment to keep test dependencies separate from system Python. The commands below install the packages; check your project’s supported versions before pinning them.

Write a test nose2 can discover
By default, nose2 looks for Python modules whose names begin with test, then loads unittest.TestCase subclasses and test functions or methods whose names begin with test. For example, test_example.py is a suitable filename; myapp_test.py does not match the default filename pattern.
Save this as test_example.py in the project directory:

Run all tests or select a test
From the project directory, run the default discovery command:

nose2To change where discovery begins or specify the importable project root, use -s/--start-dir and -t/--top-level-directory. For example:
nose2 -s tests -t .Adjust these paths to your repository. nose2 also accepts dotted names to run a particular module, class, or test. For example, for the sample file in the project root:

nose2 test_exampleUse the exact dotted module or test name that matches your package layout. If tests are not being found, first check the filename and test names, then check the start directory and import root.
Wait for dynamic page content
A browser navigation completing does not necessarily mean JavaScript-rendered content is ready. Wait for the condition your test needs instead of relying on a fixed sleep. An explicit wait checks a named condition at a specific point and fails with a timeout if that condition never becomes true.

)The 10 seconds here is a maximum wait, not a guaranteed pause. Choose a condition that represents readiness for the next action—for example, visibility or clickability when mere presence is insufficient. Selenium’s waits guide also describes implicit waits, which poll during element lookup. Explicit waits make the condition being awaited visible in the test; avoid mixing wait strategies without a deliberate reason. The waits guide is older than current Selenium releases, so verify imports and APIs against the Selenium version installed in your project.

Handle browser drivers
Modern Selenium versions use Selenium Manager to handle driver setup for most supported browsers and platforms, so manual driver downloads and PATH configuration are generally unnecessary. Support depends on the browser and platform; consult the current Selenium Manager documentation if session creation fails. Older tutorials may describe manual setup because they target earlier Selenium versions.
Configure discovery for your repository
When default discovery does not match your layout, set the start directory and top-level import directory on the command line, or configure discovery in unittest.cfg or nose2.cfg. nose2 configuration supports options such as start directory, code directories, filename patterns, and plugin modules. Discovery and loading depend on plugins; --no-plugins disables nose2’s normal discovery and loading, so it is not a general fix for missing tests.
For a quick diagnosis, compare the working directory, test filename pattern, test class or function names, and import root with the settings nose2 is using. The nose2 usage guide covers command-line selection; the configuration guide describes configuration options.

Local runs and scaling out
A local WebDriver session is the simplest place to develop and debug a test. When you need execution across browser environments or distributed runs, Selenium’s documented scaling path is Selenium Grid. Grid adds infrastructure and configuration beyond a local session; choose it when the execution environment or scale calls for that extra operational setup. See Selenium Grid.
Troubleshooting common failures
- nose2 reports no tests. Rename the module to begin with
test, verify test methods begin withtest, and run from the project directory. If the layout is nonstandard, set-sand-t. - Import errors occur during discovery. Set the top-level directory to the importable project root, confirm the virtual environment is active, and install Selenium and nose2 into that same environment.
- WebDriver cannot start a browser. Confirm the browser is installed and supported on the platform, then consult Selenium Manager guidance for the installed Selenium version. Avoid assuming an old manual-driver tutorial applies to modern Selenium.
- An element lookup fails immediately. The element may not exist yet or the locator may not match. Verify the locator and wait for the relevant condition rather than inserting an arbitrary delay.
- An explicit wait times out. Check whether the page reached the expected state, whether the selector is correct, and whether the chosen condition matches what the next test action requires. Increase the maximum only when the application’s legitimate load time warrants it.
- Browser windows remain open after failures. Ensure browser cleanup is in
tearDownor another guaranteed cleanup path so the driver quits even when an assertion fails.
