Then verify that a Percy build is associated with the expected commit and pull request. Percy approvals do not block merges by default; make that a deliberate team policy if you want visual review to be required.
How the Percy pull request workflow fits together
GitHub Actions runs your tests or snapshot command, and Percy receives the resulting visual snapshots as a build. The GitHub integration connects that build to the repository, commit, and pull request so reviewers can inspect visual differences and see status information. Connecting GitHub alone does not capture snapshots: Percy must run in CI. BrowserStack’s CI/CD integration guide describes the CI setup, while its GitHub integration guide covers repository linking and pull request status.
Set up Percy for GitHub Actions
1. Get the project token
Create or select the Percy project and copy its PERCY_TOKEN from the project settings. The token is specific to the project and can submit builds, so treat it as a credential even though it is write-only.
2. Save the token as a GitHub Actions secret
- Open the repository on GitHub and choose Settings → Secrets and variables → Actions.
- Select New repository secret.
- Name it
PERCY_TOKENand paste the project token as its value.
Do not put the token in committed workflow files, source code, or logs. In the workflow, reference it as ${{ secrets.PERCY_TOKEN }}.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Add Percy to the workflow
Choose an invocation that matches how your application produces snapshots. For a static build directory, install the Percy CLI and submit the rendered output. The following follows the structure of BrowserStack’s published GitHub Actions example; its action and Node versions are examples, not a recommendation to pin an older runtime. Use versions compatible with your repository and current project conventions.
name: Visual tests
on:
pull_request:
jobs:
percy:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v3
- uses: actions/setup-node@v3
with:
node-version: '14'
- run: npm install --save-dev @percy/cli
- run: npm run build
- run: npx percy snapshot _site/
env:
PERCY_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.PERCY_TOKEN }}
Replace npm run build and _site/ with the build command and output directory for your project. The documented example uses npx percy snapshot _site/; it is appropriate when you have rendered pages to submit as snapshots.
4. Capture pages through your test runner instead
If your existing tests take Percy snapshots through a framework integration, wrap the test command with percy exec rather than submitting a directory. For example:

The exact SDK installation and capture calls depend on the test framework and Percy integration you use. Put PERCY_TOKEN in the environment for this step too. Percy’s CI/CD guide covers both test-driven runs and snapshot submission.

An organization admin must install the Percy GitHub integration and link the Percy project to the intended GitHub repository. The current Percy guide says GitHub organization ownership is required to add integrations. Follow the integration flow for the relevant organization and repository; access and available controls can vary by organization policy.
6. Run Percy on pull request commits and verify the build
Percy’s GitHub guide says Percy must run on each commit for its GitHub status check to appear. Open a pull request and confirm the Percy build identifies the expected repository, branch, commit SHA, and pull request. Review the build’s visual differences from the Percy link shown with the PR status.

Choose how snapshots are captured, reviewed, and approved
| Decision | Option | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Capture method | Run Percy with the test command | Use when tests navigate the app and take snapshots through a supported framework integration. |
| Capture method | Submit rendered pages or a snapshot directory | Use when CI already builds pages that Percy can snapshot without driving the test runner. |
| Merge policy | Leave approvals non-blocking | This is the default described in Percy’s GitHub guide; teams can review visual differences without making approval a merge prerequisite. |
| Merge policy | Require Percy approval | Choose this only when the team intends visual approval to block merging, and configure the applicable check and branch policy deliberately. |
| Baseline model | Git | Approves or rejects at the build level; suited to CI on feature branches. |
| Baseline model | Visual Git | Lets teams advance approved snapshots independently, which can give finer-grained control over baselines. |
| Source control | GitHub or another supported provider | Percy’s integration overview lists GitHub, GitHub Enterprise Server, GitLab, Bitbucket, and Azure DevOps variants. Setup details differ by provider. |
Baseline behavior is described in Percy’s baseline documentation. Keep the review model and merge requirement separate: a visible status does not mean approval is enforced.
Handle parallel test suites and build metadata
Percy supports uploading snapshots from separate processes or machines and rendering them into the same build. If CI divides tests into parallel jobs, use Percy’s documented parallelization setup for that architecture rather than assuming independent invocations will automatically combine. Also check that the CI environment supplies the correct branch, commit SHA, and pull request metadata; some providers or custom runners may need explicit metadata configuration. See Percy’s CI environment variables documentation.

No Percy status appears on the pull request
- Confirm the Percy GitHub integration is installed for the organization and repository.
- Check that the Percy project is linked to the same repository where the pull request is open.
- Verify the workflow actually ran Percy on the pull request commit. A GitHub integration without a Percy CI run cannot produce that commit’s visual build or status.
The build is associated with the wrong branch, commit, or pull request
- Inspect the CI job’s environment and confirm the branch name, commit SHA, and pull request metadata correspond to the event being tested.
- For a custom CI provider or runner, consult the environment variable guidance and supply metadata explicitly if automatic detection does not cover that provider.
- Check that the Percy command runs in the same job context as the checked-out pull request revision.
There is no build or snapshots in Percy
- Confirm the command is the right one for your capture approach: framework tests under
percy exec, or a snapshot command pointed at the actual rendered output directory. - Make sure the build step runs before snapshot submission and that its output path matches the path given to Percy.
- Confirm the token is available to the Percy step as
PERCY_TOKEN. Avoid printing it while debugging.
A green check is being treated as approval
Check the repository’s required checks and branch protection policy. Percy approvals are not required before merging by default; configure merge blocking only if that is the intended policy.

Parallel jobs produce incomplete builds
Use Percy’s supported parallelization configuration for the CI layout and ensure each process or machine submits to the intended shared build. Percy documents combining snapshots from separate processes or machines; do not rely on separate uncoordinated builds to form one result.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Percy approval block a pull request from merging automatically?
No. Approval is non-blocking by default; require it only if your team configures it as merge policy.
Can Percy combine snapshots from parallel CI jobs?
Yes. Percy documents uploading snapshots from separate processes or machines into the same build when the supported parallelization setup is used.
